Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Dec 30, 2009 12:02 pm I really didn't put much thought into what the inside of the cupboards would be like when I did my kitchen. Silly me. I just went along with PD and chose my externals and did not think about functionality of the cupboards. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ So now...i have this corner cupboard...next to the cutlery drawers ..with a single 300mm door to access it and it goes 580mm in and then 580mm to the right. It's a deep decent cupboard with a pissy little access space. From memory, because of the type of cupboard handles we have, by the time that cupboard door opens....access wise...it's less than 250mm. My questions..... 1. Is this within regulations to have a small access to such a deep corner cupboard? 2. What can I do this this cupboard to make it more useful? Oh....another thing is....on the top of this cupboard (top of cupboard...under the quantum quartz....there is a big hole. Wouldn't really notice unless you look in the cupboard and look up. But is this ok? Can I make them redo it? Re: Need help with this corner cupboard..... 2Dec 30, 2009 12:14 pm HI OW, This is a big picture thought but. After handover consider for use of the space put your drawers over next to the dishwasher space and make that area a double door cabinet......its now easy to put anything in there.....such as big slowcookers etc. A cabinet maker or mobile cabinet man may be able to do this for around $500.....worth considering and not just putting up with it. If you ask the builders cabinetmaker to come back after handover that might be an option. Good luck Re: Need help with this corner cupboard..... 3Dec 30, 2009 12:24 pm Hi We have a u shaped kitchen so we have two corner cupboards we have to deal with. On one side our cupboard under the sink is a corner cupboard with the cupboard around the corner - this will give access around the corner - but we will probably only use this for sometimes use items. You can purchase various shelving systems that rotate outwards of the cupboard but these are quite expensive. On the other side we are having access to the corner from the other side - ours is a breakfast bar - it will have panels all long it - the last one with a touch catch door so it won't look out of place. You could do this as you have an island bench - it may be the most cost effective way. I'm sorry I don't have pictures as its not actually built yet - 4th Feb it goes in! Re: Need help with this corner cupboard..... 4Dec 30, 2009 12:45 pm I'm sorry at your disappointment at your new kitchen over these issues, this should be exciting. Some suggestions.... Look at inserts from Blum, Wilson&Bradley online. They have great inserts that you wouldn't even consider to use space. Howards Storage World also has some great inserts. Also, it looks like you have an overhang on the rear, my initial thought was to look at getting a door there to access to rear side. We had this at the last house and it didn't look out of place at all. I'm sorry not sure about the QQ cut... Re: Need help with this corner cupboard..... 5Dec 30, 2009 12:48 pm It should have been a corner cupboard with a bifold door - hubby noticed that it was very rare to see this construction in the display homes we've visited Makes access very difficult, it's a design fault unfortunately and Im not sure the builders would do anything about it considering you signed off on it? Have you considered taking off both doors in that corner, and putting them together to open together - perhaps a bit of sawing in the cupboard to open it up better too... Although I think builders sometimes like to take advantage of the fact that their customers dont know/pick up on technical stuff like that I don't know why they don't do it as standard either.... having lived with an inaccessible corner in our old kitchen, I made a point of requesting a bifold during our tender process. I'd get a cabinet maker to look at it for you, OW. Maybe there's something they can do? Re: Need help with this corner cupboard..... 10Dec 30, 2009 2:58 pm Maybe you could just put the less used items in there, such as Christmas platters etc? Would it be better if you took the shelf out and used it for taller things, vases etc? I am just trying to think of things other than changing the logistics of the actual cupboard. Just realised I have 2 of those dumb cupboards myself....great.... www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Need help with this corner cupboard..... 11Dec 30, 2009 4:42 pm I have the same thing! Mine happened because I switched the sink from a right hand drain to a left hand drain which meant the dishwasher ended up next to that cupboard! I have put little used things in the hard to reach corner such as thermos, drink bottles etc. In the easy access part I have two baskets with tea towels in one and place mats in the other. My chopping boards stand up in there also. The other really annoying part of this for me is that the powerpoint for the dishwasher is in there too! That's going to be fun if and when I have to turn the dishwasher off! Re: Need help with this corner cupboard..... 12Dec 30, 2009 4:48 pm I would see if you could get access from the other side. It should be fairly straight forward. You don't need a handle, just one of those push-to-close, push-to-open catches. My parents' place had that and it worked really well. Judie Re: Need help with this corner cupboard..... 13Dec 30, 2009 10:29 pm I feel your pain - my current kitchen has two of these cupboards and even though I put less used items in them, they are one of the most hated aspects of my kitchen. In designing our new kitchen, solving the problem of the corners is at the top of the list. Some of the inserts people have mentioned require a certain sized door opening, so you'd have to check that thoroughly. A bi-fold door that goes around the corner or putting in another door to access it from the back might cost you a bit but, in my opinion, it would be worth it. Otherwise, you will be cursing your the corner and the oversight everytime you struggle to get something out of the deep part of the cupboard. On the other hand, if you get the problem fixed, you will be thinking how wonderful your kitchen is everytime you use it. Judie That's a great solution, but the carcass may not be designed to easily allow for it. The entire back panel would have to come off and be replaced with a new shorter one as well, to allow for the door. It's worth investigating though. Seriously, these sorts of things should all be on a list of options given to every client at the planning stage. It's the kind of annoying thing tht drives you crazy... OW, at least you have plenty of storage in your lovely house - one ******* cupboard isn't going to be a huge loss of usable space for you, with your butler's pantry, big linen cupboard etc.... OK....why did the word "D.O.D.G.Y." get edited out? Re: Need help with this corner cupboard..... 15Dec 31, 2009 8:09 am Yeah, like kek says, why don't they give you options when you build it? (by YOU I mean US in general) I mean if they build kitchens every day they MUST know. Why don't they say, "Would you like to take up the option of bi-fold doors here in the corners?", I mean why don't they? Is it because they can't be bothered or what? I don't understand WHY they don't offer these things. Maybe its just bad Customer Service? www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Need help with this corner cupboard..... 16Dec 31, 2009 8:20 am themax Yeah, like kek says, why don't they give you options when you build it? More likely there are just too many of these little details for sales and selection people to keep track of. If some genius ever thought to set up a LIST on their computer system though, that could be gone through as part of the pre-construction process.... It's not really brain surgery, is it? Re: Need help with this corner cupboard..... 17Dec 31, 2009 3:04 pm Its so frustrating when simple basic things get stuffed up by the professionals. Putting a bi fold door on now is too late because the internal cupboard is not a corner and will have a wall blocking it. I have seen these great pull out drawer systems that someone else mentioned, that will fit that space perfectly. That will probably be your best bet now. Good luck with it. Your new house is looking nice though. Re: Need help with this corner cupboard..... 18Dec 31, 2009 4:52 pm I think Ikea have some swing out thingo for that cupboard. That's where I will be going. www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Need help with this corner cupboard..... 19Jan 01, 2010 12:03 am I'll have a look at ikea to see if anything fits.....but I really don't have high hopes. I think the best option would be to get a cabinet maker to put a door in the other side then at least some of the big platters can fit in there. I really don't think I can fit big platters through the tiny little opening. Yah...very annoyed that the builder doesn't give us options and that the stupid cabinet maker would just make it like that. It's not functional!!! Yes, it should be a bifold door for full access!
