Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Dec 21, 2009 5:56 pm Hi, Im looking at extending the overhang of my kitchen bench from 100mm to 200mm or 300mm so I can have bar stools. Has anyone got pictures at the 3 different lengths and what the best lenght would be, along with the costs the builder is going to charge. Also would it be a good idea to get some draws/shelves on the outside of the island bench or do it down the track when i do over head cabnets? Re: Kitchen benchtop overhang 4Dec 21, 2009 6:49 pm Hi, Thanks for the advice Dylan - that seems like a good 'inbetween' size. do you have any support under it? Do you know what the normal kitchens in displays are? I didnt really think about that onc_artisan, thanks for the heads up, i think i would be rather angry if got it and the first day it snapped! maybe 200mm or 250mm is the go. Do you think the builders will try and sting me yet again? Builders always sting you... that is why they get called B all the time Where you are coming from is where you are going to... Re: Kitchen benchtop overhang 6Dec 21, 2009 7:39 pm Not sure what stage of building you are at, but you have very little bench space in your kitchen, and the way your pantry door is angled, it takes up a lot of room. My pantry is similar, but without an angled door, so not as obtrusive. Just a few thoughts, hope you don't mind ... Re: Kitchen benchtop overhang 7Dec 21, 2009 8:18 pm It would be a Formica laminate top, standard range. Unfortuanty I should of been posting before the final contracts were signed. I'm 1 week away from prestart and can't really make anymore big changes. I wanted a wip over just a double door pantry because they are larger and I can hide my bin in there and still have cupboards. It's a small kitchen for bench space goes but I think I might move the cooktop to the left so there is more room for prep there. Do you think that would look strange? That equates to somewhere between 300 - 350mm overhang. It was asplit level house so you could see the bench from the lower level, and therefore got the overhang laminated on the underside as well.
It lasted for 14.5 years and was in perfect condition up until my wife burnt it a month prior to listing the house for sale. We replaced it with exactly the same bench! The kids used to sit on it (when i wasn't watching!). I wouldn't do it with a stone top though. They look nice but dont have the same strength. Re: Kitchen benchtop overhang 10Dec 21, 2009 8:51 pm When you say stone you mean the thin stuff not concrete. Where you are coming from is where you are going to... Re: Kitchen benchtop overhang 12Dec 21, 2009 9:30 pm I think I'll get 250 at the most, my living area is only 7m total so have to be space smart. And also sit on the bench alot, specially when I make cake. haha. My partner has his cooktop to the side with the kettle and toaster on the other side, it doesn't look too bad and is a good use of space but that's probably because he has a wall oven not a floor oven. Hmmm...so Is 375mm each side enough for some things on the benchtop or would that be enough for an oil bottle and knife block? sorry These are pretty silly questions but this place I live in here has NO benchspace and I've forgotten what a normal kitchen is! Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Thanks if you are having rolled edge benchtops and the top is over 600mm wide then you should be able to go out to 850mm wide without any extra charge ,because you are still using the same size sheet of laminate and the same size blank for the top only to be cut down to a smaller size ,length is a different matter ,and its pretty hard to snap a 33mm thick benchtop Re: Kitchen benchtop overhang 14Dec 22, 2009 12:48 pm Hi Arms, Thanks for the advice - I can now go to my builder and say that i would like to do it shouldnt be an extra cost! As for drawers or shelves, if you're going to use it as a breakfast bar, you don't want open shelves where items can be kicked off, and drawer handles would result in a lot of bruised shins. I'd go for a corner cupboard, with a push-latch so no need for a handle. If you can access that area from the opposite side, it definitely saves a lot of frustration rummaging around in dark corner cupboards. Re: Kitchen benchtop overhang 16Jan 28, 2010 1:06 pm Hi Everyone, The builder has said for $220 extra for 150mm to extend the benchtop to make it 250mm. Does anyone have any pictures of there kitchen with a bench the same or at 300mm i could look at? In our previous house, our old kitchen had 300mm o/h and when we renovated it we also kept it at 300mm. No issues and looks good too. Do you think that it will take up too much of the dining area? Considering it is a narrow area. Personally, I wouldn't think it would make much of a difference. Personally I would do it but it's up to you. (Btw, we share the same sales rep, bloody awesome guy!) For the support I mean... In the end, two pieces of treated timber (20mm thick) were bolted onto the joists and planed when there was too much sticking out. Passed inspection. 13 7789 Thanks Ardo, they are sort of semi concealed. I think it is only a few millimetres. I see if they can adjust the hinges. 4 3796 Hi Courtney The mitred edges are glued up with epoxy so those little holes and gaps are areas that weren't filled correctly. Silicone is the wrong product to fill them… 2 12921 |
