Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Dec 17, 2009 11:47 pm I had a subcontractor from the kitchen co. come to my house to install the glass canopy rangehood. The canopy sits about 650mm from the hob of the cooktop or 700mm from the benchtop. Problem now is that the duct housing (square metal piece about 400mm high and 300mm wide) is about 500mm short of the ceiling, this means I have about half that length of exposed plastic tubing (not a good look). The installer hacked a hole in the ceiling and destroyed about a metre of cornice and now he tells me he has to build a special box around the duct housing for twice the cost of the initial charge. I feel he hasnt thought about this properly -I wonder if I could just get a longer duct housing? and this might have saved a lot of stuffing around. : Re: rangehood canopy ducted outside via ceilling 2Dec 18, 2009 10:05 am From various similar experiences I can suggest you consider getting a local sheet metal shop (there are MANY around) to fold up a steel length to either extend your existing section or replace it as one full shroud as per your requirement. Just take the existing piece of housing in to the metal worker and tell them how long you need overall - they do this sort of thing all the time. Making a bulkhead type enclosure should not be accepted if it was not originally specified and is not what you want...if you like the look on the other hand, boxing it in is also o.k...but not with an extra charge - the installer should have looked at the ceiling height and equipment being fitted before quoting or allowed some extra in his price to cover this sort of contingincy. Personally I would go a new steel shroud and get the installer to fit it if he feels it is within his capabilities. It does seem like the best solution...it's frustrating that I didn't reaIise the short length earlier...now a big chunk of my ceiling and cornice is in ruins...mess everywhere all over my new benchtop...does anyone know a fabrication place in sydney's inner west?
