Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Nov 23, 2009 9:33 am Hi All, we have had our kitchen installed in our new house (well not ours yet ) and last week the tiling started. We popped around for a sticky beak and noticed the tiler has been using the island bench for his tools. He has a rug over the top but it doesnt cover the whole thing and now there is a chip on the side at the top. I will take a pic next time i am there but its about 1.5mm wide and 4mm long. How would I go about getting this repaired? It has grout dust in it at the moment and its a white bench so I dont want any stains. Can the kitchen guy sand it back or is it more complicated then that?? Thanks! Re: A chip in my new Essa stone 2Nov 24, 2009 7:31 am Wow, that's not nice I assume you are building a new house through a project builder? If so, I assume you're not allowed on site without the SS? If so, reporting this makes it harder as they would know you'd sneaked in ... but maybe it will be OK since this is The Tiler (and it appears that tilers are pretty much the only tradies we're allowed to talk to !?!??!), so maybe you could say you had to discuss something with him. If you actually hadn't, maybe you turn up and make something up just to discuss something with him - and then you'll have an excuse for seeing the damage and would be able to report it before the works proceed any further and make it harder to replace the top ... maybe .. just a thought! Good luck and let us know how it went!! Cheers My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: A chip in my new Essa stone 3Nov 24, 2009 8:30 am Yes thats right - we are allowed onsite at any time providing there is someone working there. All I have to do is ring my SS and let him know I'll be there. We had a peek after hours so I was going to wait until there is another tradie onsite, go around and pretend to only just notice it . We were there when the kitchen guy was finishing so at least I know for sure it was done after him. I'll try to find out if its easily fixed before I make a bit deal of it.... Re: A chip in my new Essa stone 4Nov 24, 2009 8:43 am When we built our last house there was a crack in the granite in a corner which wasn't even obvious but they pointed it out to me and were prepared to replace the entire piece if it's what I wanted. Report it now and make a big deal out of it...in a nice way. Re: A chip in my new Essa stone 5Nov 24, 2009 12:23 pm HI EKT, most buildng companys have a handover before they give you the keys to the house. There is usually a 6 week period for you to find and report any defects after this. However, if you dont want any disruption to your life once you have moved in, I would report it now, so it can be replaced before handover. There shouldn't be any need for a song and dance, if it is damaged, then it's damaged and that is not what you paid for. I do believe Essa stone can be repaired to be as good as new depending on the colour, but you paid for a top without blemishes and that what you should get. Good luck With 25 years kitchen experience and a passion for what I do, I have joined this forum to offer advice or at least my opinion on all things relevant to kitchens. I was a cabinetmaker by trade and am now a senior manager of a kitchen company. Re: A chip in my new Essa stone 6Nov 25, 2009 1:34 am We had an imperfection in our Essa Stone, which they were willing to replace, but it would have been a major ordeal (involving tilers, plumbers and cabinet makers, as it was on the facia of our powder room bench). I agreed to let them have a go at repairing it, and if I wasn't happy, they would replace it. Well, they did a fine job, you cannot even tell. They drilled out the imperfection and repaired it using glue stuff. Re: A chip in my new Essa stone 7Nov 29, 2009 12:53 am Wow glad I am not the only one eho has had drama's with Essa Stone. Well not the product as such, but workmanship. As I was told a week ago. Essa stone is man made and cannot be repaired in the way granite could be. The problem I had with mine, was at one of the joins where they had installed it incorrectly and left the join with a slight lip and was discoloured. After much harassing, they finally came out on friday and fixed it. But I am reserving judgement until we've wiped over it a few times. What they did was heat the join, so that the adhesive melted. Then they used acitone to clean the area. Then they reset it. So fare its looking good. ****cross fingers**** I would get onto it straight away, dont wait until handover. Re: A chip in my new Essa stone 10Nov 29, 2009 6:24 pm We have 3 joins in our benchtop and I can honestly say that one of them you can barely see it. The second you can make it out when your pretty much standing right in front of it. The third ( the one we had repaired) you see that one from 5 metres away. Now I would say you can probably see from 1.5 away. So not perfect, but better than it was. Thankyou for your advice. We do have Caesar coming out and hopefully resolve the issue for us. 4 18749 Dear Members I have to decide the Facade column size.
