Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Nov 12, 2009 12:54 pm Hi all, We are in the final steps of finishing painting our kitchen (was a bright blue with brown window frames ) to an off white, with gloss white window frames, and white venetians being installed this weekend. We really require more cupboard space, as it is a large kitchen, but one wall is completely unutilised. We are thinking about some tall cupboard / pantry on that wall and maybe some more bench space. Currently the kitchen cupboards aren't that old, but are a beech laminate (I think), with blue bench tops. I would really like to see the existing cupboards gloss white, along with the new ones, and a nice new bench top (black or similar). Is there anyway we can change the colour without replacing ALL the cupboards? Can they be painted over in gloss white? or relaminated? Thanks in advance. I'll post a pic of before we stared, and one after the venetians are installed Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Changing cupboard colour 2Nov 15, 2009 9:18 am I know you can paint most surfaces now, might be an idea to pick the brains of a paint consultant instore. I actually don't mind the colour of the cupboards. Are the wall tiles bright blue? Sharon..... frustrated interior decorator, I have always wanted to do this for a living.. Re: Changing cupboard colour 3Nov 15, 2009 7:05 pm I think if you paint the room and change the benchtop, you would actually be suprised at how nice the current doors could look (and it woud be cheaper and a lot less fiddly!) Re: Changing cupboard colour 4Nov 16, 2009 3:25 pm Thanks for the input. The reason for wanting to change the colour is we need to get more cupboard space put in. And I'm mindful that the new cupboards will not match, even if we get beech. That is a pre-purchase photo, this is what it looks like now.. As you might be able to see the sink is very 1960's. I would like to move the cupboards out from the wall a bit, put a wider benchtop in (black maybe) and put a modern inbench sink. Any thoughts? Re: Changing cupboard colour 5Nov 16, 2009 4:00 pm A few inherent problems with moving the existing units out to take a deeper top. It looks like the top might be something like 450mm deep where that top mount sink is? If you try and drop a new sink into a 430 carcass you will have all sorts of problems as you will have to cut the back out of the carcass to get it to fit, bring the plumbing through et cetera... You will need to put 150mm spacers behind the existing carcasses as floor units are screwed up against the wall and these will need to be braced. If you move the cabinets on the wall out by 150mm (or whatever it is) then the end of your peninsula will also come 150mm into the room - will this interfere with the walk through area? If you move the cabinets out by 150mm the gap will be visible from the other side of the peninsula and you will need to fill that gap with another decorative end panel. Those doors look to be a Laminex "Contour" roll formed doors or similar. I am pretty sure that you would still be able to get a matching or complimentary colour done in the same profile. But given the list of needs on this job I would be strongly advocating that you throw a little bit more money at it if you can and replace the existing cabinets and doors as well. This way you will also get up to date drawer hardware and hinges as well as the layout exactly as you want it. Cheers, Earl Re: Changing cupboard colour 6Nov 16, 2009 4:36 pm Strumer, You've put a dampener on my ideas, but that could be a good thing. I know that the whole bench area will need to be moved, this won't affect walk through area. I wouldn't of thought plumbing would need to be modified, I would only be moving and using a wider bench top to accommodate a modern sink, so the taps should be in the same spot. Drain is fairly easy to plumb up. I have thought about the gap that would be visible along one wall, I havne't quite come up with a solution for this yet If the bench along the sink is 450mm would a modern top mount sink? After the weekend Cost is a concern. We are only staying another 18 months, and want to freshen the place up and finish our renos. Thanks.
