Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Oct 28, 2009 6:24 am I'm thinking about ditching the overhead cupboards in our kitchen. I saw a picture with just shelves instead, like the Ikea Lack shelving (hidden mount shelving) and really love this look. I like the clean look, and have fallen in love with how these shelves look in kitchens. I wouldn't use them as storage exactly, more just to house nice bits and pieces so they don't look cluttered. We will have them on the wall at the back of our kitchen, on either side of a canopy rangehood. The fact we will be losing extra storage doesn't really matter, as we are also having a walk in pantry with floor to ceiling storage on both sides. Has anyone done anything like this? We will be having an all white kitchen with timber flooring and a glass splashback, so I was thinking the shelves would be a nice way to put some interest in the kitchen? Can you see any problems/pitfalls with doing something like this? Edited to add - my husband just says 'do whatever you want' but I can see he thinks I'm a bit weird for thinking this is a good idea Re: Question about overhead cupboards - anyone NOT have them? 2Oct 28, 2009 6:45 am Hi there C&D...we don't have any overhead cupboards at all and I love it! We were going to put some shelving up the same as you have written, but now that we've been in the house for a month we've decided against it...we like the open feel. Re: Question about overhead cupboards - anyone NOT have them? 3Oct 28, 2009 6:58 am Thanks for the quick reply Virginia, your house is gorgeous! You have made me feel better about no overheads, maybe I'll do like you and not put the shelves up straight away, just see how it feels when the kitchen is done. Unfortunately I don't have any pics yet (apart from a site scrape lol). We are building and STILL waiting on council approval. What is the dark colour in your house? We are thinking about having a darkish charcoal colour for our dining room with the white windows and trims, is that what yours is, or is it more blue, it's a bit hard to tell on my computer screen. Re: Question about overhead cupboards - anyone NOT have them? 4Oct 28, 2009 7:29 am The kitchen wall colour is Dulux Deep Ocean...definitely blue rather than grey, kind of a midnight colour. The rest of the house is in Wattyl Sandy Day. We've tied in the whole lot by having gloss white trims throughout the house. Re: Question about overhead cupboards - anyone NOT have them? 5Oct 28, 2009 7:30 am I'd either put cupboards, or put nothing. I wouldn't put shelves. Either side of the rangehood they'll need constant cleaning and anything on them will need constant cleaning. At mum's old house there was an open shelf on the side of the rangehood and it was always greasy and everything on it was always greasy. It was horrible. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. On our appliance wall the fridges will be integrated into a cavity with a bulkhead over top then the only thing above the pot drawers / range cooker is the rangehood itself. We also have a 4m island bench plus a 5m long walk in pantry so weren't concerned about no storage overhead. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Question about overhead cupboards - anyone NOT have them? 7Oct 28, 2009 8:36 am We went for nothing just tiles to the top behind the cook top - we saw this in a display at Berwick and loved it the fridge will be to one side and the oven tower will be the other but that will give us a clean 2400 space - eventually Land: Titles 27/10/2009 - settled 9/11/2009 House Design: Talbot 28 (Contemporary Façade) Estimated move in date April 2010 ... ok maybe June 2010 with any luck Site Start 22/01/10 - 20/08/10 Handover!! We are not having any in our new house either. I was forever asking someone to reach up and grab me something as I am a short arse Re: Question about overhead cupboards - anyone NOT have them? 11Oct 28, 2009 6:50 pm Re: Question about overhead cupboards - anyone NOT have them? 12Oct 28, 2009 7:00 pm We are not having over head cupboards either. We have decided to have a walk in pantry, so I am going to put most of our stuff in there. The only thing I use our current overhead cupboards for is just storing the odds & ends we dont use daily anyway. I wanted some sort of shelving aswell, just for decorative purposes. Re: Question about overhead cupboards - anyone NOT have them? 13Oct 28, 2009 7:15 pm We aren't having any either (because I hate overhead cupboards). We are just having x2 Blum cupboards near the fridge. Expensive but something I really wanted. Re: Question about overhead cupboards - anyone NOT have them? 14Oct 29, 2009 6:44 am Glad to see I'm not the only one who doesn't want overheads. With the cleaning, if there was shelf at the height where the paint changes colour on princessfee's picture, do you think that would still get grease on everything? That's about the height of the shelves in the pictures I've seen? Re: Question about overhead cupboards - anyone NOT have them? 15Oct 29, 2009 7:16 am C&D With the cleaning, if there was shelf at the height where the paint changes colour on princessfee's picture, do you think that would still get grease on everything? That's about the height of the shelves in the pictures I've seen? Yep, at mum's old house, she had cupboard above the ranehood and the open shelf thing was next to that, but attached to the overheads. So, it was started at the same height of the overheads and went as high as them. (I hope I'm making sense, haven't got a pic.) The shelves and anything on them had to completely cleaned about every week to 10 days as they sort of got covered in a greasy film. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. That's about the height of the shelves in the pictures I've seen? Yeah, I would say that it would aswell. But I think that it would depend on how much greasy cooking you did and how OCD you were . I know that I will be fine in that department . Re: Question about overhead cupboards - anyone NOT have them? 17Oct 29, 2009 9:33 am I don't mind overhead cupboard but because all the walls bar the pantry and splashback will have full-width windows overheads aren't viable. I could theoretically put a couple in either side of the rangehood but they'd look out of place. We don't really cook greasy stuff all that often either, snags and steaks are usually done on the bbq outside anyway. Re: Question about overhead cupboards - anyone NOT have them? 19Oct 29, 2009 8:58 pm I'm having a couple on one side of the kitchen ... but the main part there will be none ... I can't reach them, can't see the point of them ... I also have high ceilings so the tops of the cupboards would be disgusting. I am having a shelf though ... saw a gorgeous pic in an english mag and I'm copying that style ... doing tiled splash back up to the shelf, then paint above. I like overhead cupboards so Ive had nothing to say on this thread but You can get bulkheads built in so there is no space above the cupboards - we have 9 ft ceilings and that's what we did Hi, Can anyone give me approx. price for overhead cupboards. TIA 0 16616 Bigger the better for storage for me IMO. But I guess it's harder to tell the cost/benefit in your example - mainly the 'cost'? If you go 700mm, what are you doing extra… 2 1424 I haven’t. But have a Lowe Design home. Not only did I find Matt Lowe patronising and a bully, but the home is NOT TO CODE. I have water coming through the bricks… 1 14408 |
