Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jul 01, 2007 12:36 am I've arranged for my granite kitchen benchtop to have a bullnose edge, but am having second thoughts. The house style is very modern and i'm thinking a square edge will fit in better. Square seems to be the latest thing, but maybe it will date.
I'm also concerned that there might be a higher likelihood of the edges chipping with a square edge. Some friends put a limestone benchtop in their kitchen and had a lot of problems with chipping, but I know that limestone is much softer than granite. Am I being paranoid? Re: Kitchen bench - bullnose or square edge? 3Jul 01, 2007 8:34 am Hate to tell you but you will get chipping no matter what shape it is in.
Everyone with stone, granite, or man made stone should be careful. Even those of us with laminate need to be careful. If your home is modern, stick to “square edge”, this will give you the clean lines that allow the modern look and feel through a home. Bullnose is more in keeping with a country feel. ![]() Internal and External - Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide Re: Kitchen bench - bullnose or square edge? 5Jul 01, 2007 4:54 pm I also agree. I've decided to use laminate instead but am going for 50m thick square edge. I think it matches other aspects of the kitchen, especially with most appliances being rectangular and so on. A lot of sinks these days are also incorporating square or straight lines in the design. Unless your kitchen has a more rounded design to it I would stick with square edge. Re: Kitchen bench - bullnose or square edge? 7Jul 01, 2007 5:52 pm "Bull nose / postformed tops are sooooo 10 years ago."
As opposed to square edged tops which are so 30 years ago... Just for a change we are watching fashion move in circles - I never thought square edged tops would be making a come back! But then, when you have clients like Jo who want those 50 metre edges what else are you going to do? (Hi Jo - grin) Cheers, Earl Re: Kitchen bench - bullnose or square edge? 8Jul 01, 2007 6:13 pm Yep, I had to have a second look at that!
I have square edge from 20 years ago, nice to know I have come back into fashion. But like I have always said…… no matter what you have, and how old it is, it WILL come back! Go the retro kitchens….and yes, with Lime Green!!!! ![]() Internal and External - Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide Re: Kitchen bench - bullnose or square edge? 9Jul 01, 2007 6:36 pm I believe the rule with fashion is that if a fashion item (say flares) comes back in to fashion again you are not allowed to wear it if you wore it the first time around. Perhaps it should also apply to kitchens.
I'm in my 30s Earl so I believe I am safe on that one ![]() ![]() ![]() By the way don't get your hopes up Earl that I'm going to order a 50m long kitchen from you ![]() ![]() Jola Re: Kitchen bench - bullnose or square edge? 10Jul 01, 2007 6:45 pm Hahahah, how funny Jola! Well put.
I couldn’t even fit into my flairs now! Love the comment about your parents and their first kitchen, that just enforces the fashion turn around. Very funny! ![]() Internal and External - Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide Re: Kitchen bench - bullnose or square edge? 11Jul 01, 2007 7:44 pm Thanks all, you've confirmed it for me. I'll give my poor builder a call and change it to square. I'ts only about the 200th variation, but hey - i'm the one paying!!!!
With the amount it's costing I'm tempted to put a rope barrier around it and do all my cooking on the BBQ. That way it will still be in pristine condition in 30 years when square edges come back into fashion again ![]() Re: Kitchen bench - bullnose or square edge? 12Jul 03, 2007 4:46 pm Stay with the bullnose, it does offer protection. Square edge is just a box, which is harsh, cheap and nasty.
When I see these supposedly architecturally designed houses that are just rectangular/square boxes I think what’s so architecturally designed about that. But if thats your cup of tea then go for it. Re: Kitchen bench - bullnose or square edge? 13Jul 03, 2007 5:25 pm I can see Dimmy running back and forth to her* supervisor continually changing between bullnose and square edge as this thread progresses.
*For the purposes of this post I have assumed Dimmy to be female. Apologies if you are in fact not female. No difference in the "boxiness" of Pencil Edges vs Bullnose for this material This is granite that was originally being discussed - not laminate... Cheers, Earl Re: Kitchen bench - bullnose or square edge? 16Jul 05, 2007 10:55 pm I've seen bullnose edges in a few kitchen mags and they do look really nice, but Michelle had a good point - they're a bit too country.
I took the plunge and changed it to square, but I rang the cabinetmaker direct so the builder wouldn't spit the dummy!! I have to say I feel so much better about the final choice. Now I just have to sit back and try and be patient, this house building thing takes FOREVER in Perth. And yes Cookiemonster, I am a female. It's hard to tell sometimes on these posts. Re: Kitchen bench - bullnose or square edge? 17Jul 06, 2007 12:19 am We have a beautiful BULLNOSED DuPont Corian benchtop that we installed (you guessed it) 10 years ago!
I have noted the trends for straight, square edges these days. Putting aside opinions of where the fashion cycles may be, FEEL the difference! The 50mm bul-lnosed edges are just a 10000% friendlier. We've never regretted our choice of bench-tops for a moment! In our home, the bench that extends out from the kitchen is the very hub of our home. The place that guests will sit at and enjoy a cuppa, the place we have breaky, and just about everything. It is one of the most used parts of our home. And no chips anywhere! The smooth, user-friendly edges of our bench-tops are timeless, in my opinion (just like our beautiful axminster carpets)! ![]() Ash. Re: Kitchen bench - bullnose or square edge? 19Jul 06, 2007 7:22 pm I like rounded edges and curves. I need to however fo for the 40mm square edges as that will go better with square washbasins and chunky taps.
My builder is not charging me for for upgrade to 40 mm pencil edge granite which was a pleasant surprise... not sure how much extra it would have been for the bull nose ot wavy edges though.. vp ![]() Re: Kitchen bench - bullnose or square edge? 20Jul 11, 2007 7:55 pm Definitely square!!!
