Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Sep 20, 2009 1:12 pm Just got back from a meeting with our cabinet maker - our kitchen is going in, in two weeks. He says that a 50cm pull out pantry will give us heaps more bench space and other cabinets/draws. Our fridge is massive and we will have heaps of overhead cupboards as well as a separate section for tea/coffee/sugar etc..... so is 50cm big enough? I dont want to regret it later... Re: How big does the pantry need to be - family of 4... 2Sep 20, 2009 1:57 pm Maybe you could try a "pretend run". Take all your stuff out of your current pantry and stack it to see if it would fit in a pull-out system. Is it the pull out metal type. I have seen photos of these and wonder as I am short if I could get stuff off the top shelf without having to get a chair, as you have to lift things over the wire lip. IYKWIM Can you adjust the shelves in these system also? We are trying to squeeze in a pantry too, at the moment it will be 600mm wide (hopefully 650mm wide). We are having 3 drawers on the bottom section and doors from benchtop up. I've had to make comprimises in other areas of the kitchen layout to acheive this width, hopefully which will look ok Final measure-up on Wednesday, hope its not back to the drawing board. Re: How big does the pantry need to be - family of 4... 3Sep 20, 2009 2:12 pm Ive done a 'mental' trial run. My parents have a pantry double the size that ours will be but without pull outs. I figure they have alot of junk up the back they never see/use/has expired etc. They also use the bottom shelf for appliances and the top shelf for gladwrap/baking paper/non-food items. We will have extra cupboards for appliances and drawers in our island bench for non-food items. Also any sauces will go in the fridge. I guess I could even store long term foods like pasta in an over head cupboard but I'm just not sure... I havent ever seen food any where but in the pantry or fridge so it might take some getting used too... whats better.... more bench space or pantry space..... Drawers on bottoms? Never thought about this but I can see how much easier it would be.... might speak to DH about that... Ours will be like this http://www.smartpackkit.com.au/Content_ ... 470914.seo without the shelves on the back of the door. Re: How big does the pantry need to be - family of 4... 4Sep 20, 2009 3:07 pm That's a nice pantry . Haven't seen that type before, I've only seen the type where all the drawers pull out at the same time. This is what we are thinking of doing. Not the best photo, but you can get the idea. We are having the top drawer about 180mm deep, the other two about 270mm deep. We were going to have these bottom drawers internal inside the pantry as well, but realised I would have to open the two pantry doors fully to pull them out. If you are only having one door this issue would not be a problem, you would just have to consider which direction would be best for the door to open. If you do consider the type of pantry we are having, it may depend how this would look with your whole kitchen design as the doors are quite narrow at about 300mm each. Which if all of your other doors are larger may look odd. Most of our doors are going to be about this size anyway. If you organize it well it with proper storage containers etc it will be very efficient ~*~Moved in on the 16th April 2011~*~ Re: How big does the pantry need to be - family of 4... 8Sep 20, 2009 6:22 pm Thanks for the pic kazza - I was wondering what one of those would look like...I think it would work well in our kitchen as we are having a set of 3 drawers next to the pantry. zoe's mama I think that pantry is fab!!! If you organize it well it with proper storage containers etc it will be very efficient We will definately have to have everything in containers - if anything was to spill I can imagine it would fall through the baskets and get over everything... Has anyone else got one of these? Any messes so far? Re: How big does the pantry need to be - family of 4... 9Sep 20, 2009 8:37 pm i really like the organised pantry, might have to look at doing something like that in my kitchen! we have a family of 5 so want the most space possible - but my new pantry is the same size as a bedroom built-in robe as is, and compared to my current pantry which is probably 1/3 that size, I think we'll be fine Caz & Co ALL MOVED IN!! Now comes all the hard work-decorating.... I've spread our food out into the overhead cupboards with things I don't use much (baking ingredients) on the very top shelves. Tea, coffee, milo etc above the kettle. Peanut butter, honey, etc above the toaster. Salt, pepper, oils, spices, sauces, etc next to the stove - finding this really handy, actually. Left in the actual pantry are biscuits, cereals, rice, pasta, noodles, canned foods. Like I said, I'm really liking having the things I use as I cook close by, and considering setting up my kitchen like this once we move to our new house. I will probably use some of my pantry space for appliances instead. Re: How big does the pantry need to be - family of 4... 12Sep 21, 2009 1:21 pm For a family of 4 I feel that you can never have enough pantry space. You will always find room for things to go into that space if you feel that they are under stocked, utilised. We have 2 of those pull out pantries set for our renovation, both are 650mm wide. I know it's quite a lot of room, but I have a lot of stuff to stow that currently fits into an old space that once was a fire stove (old house in Queensland) Re: How big does the pantry need to be - family of 4... 13Sep 26, 2009 6:39 pm Nathan SteelFab We have 2 of those pull out pantries set for our renovation, both are 650mm wide. I know it's quite a lot of room, but I have a lot of stuff to stow that currently fits into an old space that once was a fire stove (old house in Queensland) I'm about to do a "things I'd do differently next time", and high on the list is the dimensions of my pull out pantry. We have a 600mm wide pull out pantry and there's so much wasted space. I love the pull out pantry, but having it 450 or 500 wide would have been plenty big enough. The shelves in the pull out pantry (that we have) do not go across the whole 600mm wide. FWIW with regards to pantry sizes etc... as mentioned above, we have the pull out pantry, but I also designed the kitchen to include an "appliance cupboard". One of the BEST things I've done with these renos. A standard 600mm wide tall cupboard with normal shelves. Houses all our appliances PLUS room for extra pantry stuff. I use my pull out pantry for frequently used items and the appliance cupboard is my "spares" (ie when I've used the jar of pasta sauce from the pull out pantry, then I'll grab one from the spares pantry). Basically. If the shelves are fixed then they will be screwed in just the same as the rest of the carcass.
