Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Sep 20, 2009 12:36 am This is the kitchen in the house I'm hopefully buying. http://www.realestate.com.au/objects//p ... 905084.jpg I'd want to redo the thing, with a flat pack from bunnings or somewhere similar. I kind of like the wall cabinets as is. I read in the bunnings things that the wall cabinets are 720mm high, same as the floor cabinets. This would make them reach the ceiling almost and I feel would look out of place with it being such a small kitchen. Do you think the wall cabinets are worth keeping? if so how would you incorporate them into a new kitchen? Re: just curious, kitchen ideas. 2Sep 20, 2009 9:39 am If you are going to keep the overheads I would try to find some lower cabinets that are fairly similar, flat fronted doors in timber or mdf and paint them all to match. If you put in laminate cupboards the overheads wont look right IMO. Are there more cupboards on the other side of the kitchen? because what's there in the picture really isnt enough cupboard space to live with so If that's it, then I would do a whole rethink and install more cupboards where you can with new matching overheads and get as much extra cupboard space as you can in there. The other thing I was going to mention is the position of that sink is very bad they way it's been stuck in the corner like that, and I would consider putting in a larger window and moving the sink underneath it if the budget allows it. You can also get custom flat pack kitchens made and get them made up in the sizes you want. Dont assume that going to bunnings or ikea is the best way, check out the other options because the prices can be very comparable and you'll get a better result. just had another idea you coule get lower cabs in timber/mdf to paint, and take the doors/hinges off the overheads and paint to match and use them as open shelving. that way you could go a bit more interesting with the new lower cabinet doors. Open shelving looks great overhead but you'd really want to use it for things like dishes/glasses/decorative cookware. having cereal boxes etc up there wont look very neat and you will have to wipe out the dust from time to time but it's a nice look. Re: just curious, kitchen ideas. 3Sep 20, 2009 12:21 pm personally, you need to throw out the whole old kitchen, the mucking around trying to align the old shells to the new stuff just wouldn't be worth the saving - and I reckon will give you no end of problems - new flat packs are so cheap, just go a whole new one! Good luck A thankful person is a happy person. I've ripped them all out and am having a cabinet maker (my uncle ) redo my whole kitchen with a lot more cupboard space and a pantry. I do love the look of the overhead cupboards, I liked mine but it just wouldn't go with the new type of kitchen I have in mind. If you can make the overheads work with a new one they are a great feature, but as someone said, it would be hard to match them up with something new underneath. I love the door on the right hand side! If you're in WA and are looking to get rid of it Re: just curious, kitchen ideas. 5Sep 28, 2009 11:58 pm The unit I purchased has a very similar kitchen corner to your photo. Almost exact. I have the same window in the same corner. I have gutted my kitchen now (my cabinets looked older than yours) - supposed to be giving my final design to cabinet maker tomorrow and in the resign trying to keep the top cabinets from blocking my window. Re: just curious, kitchen ideas. 6Sep 29, 2009 12:47 pm I've signed my contract just waiting on unconditional approval and its all a go... I don't have a separate dining room, it is more like a small kitchen/meals area. here is the kitchen end. http://photos-c.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak ... 9841_n.jpg here is the other end. http://photos-a.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak ... 6864_n.jpg I'm most likely going to move the sink under the window. redo the cabinets and overheads, rip out that gas heater and extend the cabinets across to where the stove goes, creating more space. in the 2nd photo you can see a freestanding pantry, i am thinking of putting a built in one with a little more bench/cupboard space at that end of the room. the other idea i've had which is a bit out there, is putting a reasonable sized island in the middle, at one end I would have cabinets for storage and maybe raise a breakfast bar. and the longer part of the T would be used as a table, with the ability to seat 5 people. is this last idea possible? or is it just silly? at the moment i'm just full of ideas for maximising this tiny space, however strange they may seem. Re: just curious, kitchen ideas. 7Sep 29, 2009 3:52 pm Congratulations on Purchase Brydz! My sink was on the same side as your photo except more the the right away from the corner. I have had my water pipes moved so I can put the sink against the wall with the window. My window is in the same corner as yours but mine is unfortunately right up against the corner. I will have my sink just to the left of it. Good thing I moved my sink as when they moved the pipes they found they were disgusting. All rust and I dont know what on the sides, leaving little room for water flow!! I got new pipes and now my water pressure was amazing! I thought I had bought bad water pressure. I would say both styles you have pictured are steel. The lower chord of the first pic would be a massive lump if made using timber considering the size of the rafters.
