Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Aug 26, 2009 4:07 pm Hi this is MickB's wife here! We are up to the final stages of the kitchen and laundry and we need to find handles. We have been quoted for 300mm handles on all drawers and cupboards but are not sure of what style we want. We were thinking maybe 12mm square edged handles in brushed stainless steel or the circular bar handles. They will be all horizontal on the drawers and then vertical on 3 tall pantry cupboards, the 2 cupboards above the fridge and the 2 cupboards under the sink. What we are not sure of is, if the handles should be a bit shorter on the cupboards above the fridge (the cupboards are about 500mm) and under the sink (the cupboards are about 900mm). The kitchen designer said the 300mm square ones all over will look good, very architectural and modern! I'm just not sure. I am starting to stress a bit too much! I know they are just handles but can anyone help and give me some opinions! Thank you. Re: HANDLES FOR KITCHEN & LAUNDRY, HELP PLEASE!!! 2Aug 26, 2009 4:32 pm Bite your tongue MickB's wife!!!!! there is no such thing on here as JUST HANDLES I think the kitchen designer could have a point, I think they would look good all the one size, had I had handles I would have had them all the same size. Re: HANDLES FOR KITCHEN & LAUNDRY, HELP PLEASE!!! 3Aug 26, 2009 9:23 pm This forum is great for airing all your kitchen woes and discussing the very small but very important decisions. Now in my kitchen plan i'm having lots of larger pot drawers in the two large one small combo and one set of smaller 500mm cutlery drawers as well as a cupboard under the sink and above the fridge and a pantry. I'm having larger handles on my pot drawers horizontal, square looking and on the small set of cutlery drawers smaller handles, same handle type. Sorry dont know the sizes but i'm guessing they are standard. Also having the smaller handles vertically on the sink cupboard and the fridge cupboard. and the larger ones again on the pantry, vertically. no handles on the wall units. I also thought long and hard about this and in the end i thought the large handles might look wrong above the small cupboards over the fridge and on the small cutlery drawers. I guess in my design as well, the cutlery drawer is on one end and next to the dishwasher and the sink so not near the pot drawers. I guess you could put one of those larger handles against the what the measurement of the fridge cabinet will be and see how its looks. After typing this i'm now considering having all the larger ones now. Oh no. We are getting a flat pack and will be drilling the handles ourselves so i'm gonna wait till the kitchen is all installed before deciding. I guess my rambling has been pointless. Sorry but i do understand your dilema. Re: HANDLES FOR KITCHEN & LAUNDRY, HELP PLEASE!!! 4Aug 26, 2009 9:33 pm Mango I also thought long and hard about this and in the end i thought the large handles might look wrong above the small cupboards over the fridge and on the small cutlery drawers. I guess in my design as well, the cutlery drawer is on one end and next to the dishwasher and the sink so not near the pot drawers. I'm with Mango on this one. I totally agree that small handles on long pot drawers look wrong. I have 4 different sized handles for my kitchen, the sizes are all in proportion to the size of the cupboard/drawer. It took me ages to decide on them. If you have long drawers then I think you need long handles. Nothing worse than seeing a 900mm wide pot drawer with a 300mm handle on it (in my opinion) Happy at Home Re: HANDLES FOR KITCHEN & LAUNDRY, HELP PLEASE!!! 5Aug 27, 2009 1:03 am We are about to get our kitchen installed tomorrow and hope we chose rightly too. We've decided to go for larger handles for the pot drawers, cutlery drawers and those cupboards that have wider doors and then the smaller handles on all the smaller double doors, hope we've made the right choice! too late to back up now! I can post pics on Friday maybe of how our handles look and you can get an idea then. We are also going to ask them to center the handles on the doors (to match how they are done on draws) rather than putting them closer to the oppening of the doors if you know what I mean... Building a Wisdom Prosperity 23 - http://erwisdomprosperity.blogspot.com/ Re: HANDLES FOR KITCHEN & LAUNDRY, HELP PLEASE!!! 6Aug 27, 2009 4:01 am Hi there, I'm currently renting and the kitchen here has a combination of 900mm, 500mm and longer width pot drawers. The handles on these cabinets are the T-bar 256mm length (circular) handles. If you're going conventional for how they should be placed, i.e. horizontal for drawers and vertical for cupboards (overhead and underbench), than the longer length handles will work well. Perhaps what you can do in the meantime is do a cut out of your cupboard width doors (500mm and 900mm) out of paper. Print out to scale the length of your cupboard handles (if you can't get actual samples) and play around with the placement and lengths...? Personally, if you're not into modern flare, don't go for the square handles.... it's going to be your kitchen so really you shouldn't be swayed by the kitchen designer's suggestion. Modern is for now...if you choose something which can withstand the vogue test....perhaps that's the way to go with your handles. I got some cardboard and cut out the handle lengths and blu-tacked them onto my cupboards so I could see what the lengths would look like Happy at Home Re: HANDLES FOR KITCHEN & LAUNDRY, HELP PLEASE!!! 8Aug 27, 2009 11:43 am Thankyou all for your help and suggestions. I was up till midnight trying to work out what handle and what size would work best. Didn't sleep last night of course, so I rang the kitchen guy and he said I could have more time to choose as "you only do it once, so you have to get it right!" We have 4 banks of drawers. One is 1150mm(very long), one is 580mm and the other two are same size in the island bench, 850mm. Last night I chose 200mm handles in the undersink and fridge overhead cupboards and in the 580 mm drawers and 300mm handles for all other drawers and 3 tall cupboards. BUT... when I woke up this morning I started worrying that 300mm handles would look too short in the very long drawers so I was thinking maybe 600mm handles in the 1150 long drawers and 400mm in the island bench drawers?? I am stressing out so much, I just want to get it right! I might try the cardboard cutouts tonight as I am unable to get samples. I have chosen 8mm x 12mm square edged handles but am not sure now whether thay might look too modern?! My kitchen is designer white gloss 2 pac with caesarstone nougat benchtops. I want just a simple, clean , no fuss look. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh, I am pulling my hair out right now!!! Any more thoughts? Thanks, MickB's wife! Re: HANDLES FOR KITCHEN & LAUNDRY, HELP PLEASE!!! 9Aug 27, 2009 11:54 am Hi House-to-be and Jochicho Just read your posts again and would love to see some pics as it is always better to see something when making a decision. (I love seeing everyone elses kitchens too!!) Could you also tell me the size of your drawers and doors and the size of the handles you used if possible? Thank you so much, Mick B's wife. Re: HANDLES FOR KITCHEN & LAUNDRY, HELP PLEASE!!! 10Aug 27, 2009 1:47 pm I have white 2 pac and Nougat too unfortunately no handles, but I was going to use the square edged which I ended up putting in my laundry. They are not too modern MickB's wife, actually just perfect. 1500 long is long, so yes definitely go the 600 handles there and 400 on the island sounds good. As you can see at the very last second I ended up going with the stainless steel inset handles. yep it's that photo again Re: HANDLES FOR KITCHEN & LAUNDRY, HELP PLEASE!!! 11Aug 27, 2009 2:03 pm I'm feeling your pain!! I have been searching for 8 months for the perfect kitchen handles and can't find the ones that I've got in my head (is anyone here a blacksmith?) so I have decided to go no handles!! Hettich make push to open gizmos for cupboards and drawers, so if I can't find what I am looking for then my kitchen is going to go naked If i ever find those elusive perfect handles, I can install them down the track as there will be no holes drilled to the outside panels that will need patching up. Good luck with your search Mez Re: HANDLES FOR KITCHEN & LAUNDRY, HELP PLEASE!!! 12Aug 27, 2009 2:26 pm SuH I have white 2 pac and Nougat too unfortunately no handles, but I was going to use the square edged which I ended up putting in my laundry. In that case, I would than go for the square handles. Since you have some pretty long drawers...the long ones (600mm was it?) wouldn't look so out of place. OR go for something similar to Suh's kitchen?? p.s. Suh, you have one looker of a kitchen. The metal insert style "handles" look great in your gloss kitchen too! Very semaless and the metal acts as an accent colour too! Are your drawers the soft touch closing ones? (i.e. they sort of close on their own without slamming). Honestly, I had my handles chosen for months, then changed to the square edge then the day before my "cut-off for changing my mind" date I changed my mind.... to these, and am so so glad, they have been great and they do act as an accent colour don't they Thanks for your nice comment, I am still loving it Re: HANDLES FOR KITCHEN & LAUNDRY, HELP PLEASE!!! 14Aug 27, 2009 3:45 pm Hi SuH and tc2000, Thankyou for your kind words of wisdom. I think I will go with the longer ones, it seems to sit a lot better with me and isn't making me feel sick the more I think about it!! It might be the answer. I will talk to MickB when he gets home. He already thinks I'm nuts!!! I unfortunately can't change to the insert handles as the kitchen has been made and they are just waiting on me!! I do love them though SuH, your kitchen is devine! I took long enough choosing the paint colour and benchtop so it's not unusual that I'm taking a long time to work out the handles!! I'm still worried that the designer white will be too white to match the caesarstone but it's too late now! I still have to choose a glass splashback colour, looking forward to that, NOT!!! Although, I really like the green glass with white behind it that gives a soft mint effect or maybe a pale or shimmery grey to match the flecks in the nougat benchtop. Just another question, I was thinking about 300mm handles on the long floor to ceiling pantry cupboards, do you think this will still work? What are your thoughts? I like the way your handles are sized to fit the drawer and its sealed the deal for me now. I will have larger and smaller handles as first planned. Only one more decision to make- The splashback colour! Re: HANDLES FOR KITCHEN & LAUNDRY, HELP PLEASE!!! 19Aug 28, 2009 12:23 pm Mango Great pics house to be. Only one more decision to make- The splashback colour! Glad I helped you Mango. I actually found picking the kitchen handles to be the hardest thing of all! It took me ages, I did cut out the different sizes using cardboard and stuck them onto the cupboard which helped me But I'm glad I did it as I'm really happy with them. I'm more pleased that I didn't stick with the builder's range and sourced my own. Splashback I won't even go there! Our builder gave us the wrong colour (first choice but then I changed it) and they are still waiting on an answer from me about changing it. I don't like it but everyone else does....... Happy at Home Re: HANDLES FOR KITCHEN & LAUNDRY, HELP PLEASE!!! 20Aug 28, 2009 5:42 pm Thank you so much SuH and House-to-be, your photos are great and really helped. I'm pretty sure I will go with the handles in proportion to the drawer, like yours House-to-be. What size are your actual handles, e.g are they 8mm x 12mm or 12mm x 12mm? Your kitchen colours look similar to mine, what have you chosen? What colour splashback have you got? What might you think you will change it to? Thanks so much.
