Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Aug 22, 2009 8:15 am I've decided on a layout that I love for my kitchen but don't know how practical it will be. Does anybody have some cupboards under their breakfast bar? Are they totally impractical? I was thinking of putting narrow cupboards in front of where the stools sit. The island would be extra wide then - 600mm for the side facing the kitchen, 300mm over the cupboards facing the other room and 300mm more so you can fit your legs under the breakfast bar - making the island 3m long by 1.2m wide. Like this one: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ In the cupboards I was planning to keep things we hardly ever use because I imagine they aren't that easy to access. I was also thinking just plain doors so that the kids can't kick anything. They would also be handless so no-one bumps their knees on the handles - ouch! That pic above has some open shelves with some vases - I can see them lasting all of 5 mins before someone kicks them over and they bust. Any advice? Both of these breakfast sides have 4 cupboards each. And yep no handles since we are having 2pac with grooved tops as handles. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Cupboards under the breakfast bar 6Aug 22, 2009 9:55 pm cazoraz i'm contemplating this too, just dont know if i want to have an island bench that wide, IYKWIM I've liked the look of the wide islands that I've seen on tv shows and magazines - more like a tabletop than a bench. (Haven't seen one IRL yet though.) I will have a sink in mine and I want the minimalist look - so no splashback/servery - I'm hoping the extra width will help catch some of the inevitable sink splatter. We are currently using an 800mm benchtop as combined kitchen prep area, homework desk and dining table - having an extra 400mm will feel like heaven! SuH You can't have enough storage nice kitchen too! That one is nice, isn't it! Mine will be essentially just the white parts of that one but a little longer - a comparatively small galley. It will have the same cupboard space as my current kitchen but the effective storage space should be better with lots more drawers and, most importantly, no corner cupboards (my #1 pet hate with our current kitchen). The breakfast bar cupboards will be extra storage over what we currently have and will probably get filled pretty quickly. Probably be spending more time in the kitchen now there's a mortgage to pay and less eating out! kyton My island bench is 4m by 1.2m and has two sections of "breakfast bar" on either side of a raised servery. Your kitchen sounds pretty unique with the blue stone tops (your comment in the blue splashback thread). Will you be posting pictures? We were looking at all white, but when the red got in our heads it just became a matter of how much...... It kind of lights up the room. We have a 2yr old and a 3yr old and we do perch them on stools at the counter here but they are more self sufficient and safe at the table. I could do with the exercise walking food over to the demanding little beggars. Re: Cupboards under the breakfast bar 12Aug 23, 2009 9:19 pm Oh, and too drag myself back on topic, our outward facing cupboards are quite shallow, only 200mm deep from memory, but we think even that will be pretty useful - our last house had a similar space and we found it quite easy to use. Re: Cupboards under the breakfast bar 13Aug 24, 2009 4:37 pm Hi, I designed and built our island bench and we did exactly that, had the standard cupboards on the inside, added about 400mm for a cupboard on the stool side and the overhang to put your feet in. I measured out the required depth by the fact we were going to keep the kids drawing paper, arts and crafty bits and some toys in those simple plastic drawers. One we knew all that, i designed it to suit. I still have little curved handles but they are at the top. The kids mostly go under to get the things they need out of the drawers so no trouble with banging heads on breakfast bar. Looks Great and the room on top makes it a perfect preparation area for food, baking, rolling out pastry, etc... I bought all the data cable back to here so it houses my server/modem etc.. The cupboard is rarely accessed but it is handy to not have this equipment in the roof space or taking up wardrobe space. Re: Cupboards under the breakfast bar 15Aug 25, 2009 9:13 pm merls3 We have a 'U' shaped kitchen so used the dead space in one of the corners for a cupboard facing out into our living area. That is such a good idea! Inner corner cupboards suck so majorly (I'm sure there's a more eloquent way of putting that!) and there's always "stuff" you need when you're in the dining room that it would be good to be able to chuck in a cupboard and have it close at hand. Eskay40 I designed and built our island bench and we did exactly that, had the standard cupboards on the inside, added about 400mm for a cupboard on the stool side and the overhang to put your feet in. I've just plucked 300mm out of the air for now. It's the width of our current overhead cupboards and they seem to hold almost all of the things I've tried to put there, but I'm sure we would fill the space OK whichever width they end up. I may find we have to go back to a 1100mm width island to avoid a join - can't find any maximum widths for Squareform online. I'm pretty much saving that detail until we get our quotes. Is 300mm a good overhang for leg space under a breakfast bar? Our current overhang is only 200mm and it is so uncomfortable. Another 100mm looks about right but I'm only guessing. Kylie Re: Cupboards under the breakfast bar 16Aug 26, 2009 9:57 am Yes, 200mm is too small. We have a similar overhang at a holiday house and it's too shallow. The one I built has 280mm and it's just fine; no knee bangs. And definitely find out the maximum sheet size. We used every spare mm!!
