Overseas granite plays a practical role in the kitchen otherwise hardwoods or laminate are used instead, more practical and less prone to chipping, kitchen accidents and accidental glass/ceramic cookware breakage. Well thanks they have more specific use than that for food preparation more specifically what? Does anyone know? Common people Nah, I think you will find most people just use them as a benchtop and choose them over wood and laminate for the common reasons (looks, durability), and is very little to do with prepping food on them. I beleive granite and stone bench tops are best for rolling dough because they are colder - but not crucial to have one, my mum used to make many home made buns etc on an old laminate benchtop. Re: Granite benchtops what do you use them for? 16Aug 21, 2009 6:02 pm Hmm making bread and rolling dough- making me hungry. Just wondering as we are getting our granite top sealed with this chemical sealer, will that be absorbed into any pastry if made directly on the surface? I guess to be on the safe side, i wont do it. i might ask for the cut out from the stove to be left unsealed and then i could use that! Sometimes I do I grew up with this custom so it is hard to shake off old habits, must confess I have always been an addicted to crispy and crunchy toasty things so every now and then make few loaves, thick pizzas or pizza in teglia, empanadas, wonderful Argentinean croissants unlike the French ones these are sweet/savoury and very crispy and then dunk them into cafe con leche I also make sweet soft buns which I put some raw cured ham (otherwise known as jamon or prosciutto) prefer the Serrano kind my better an less salty than the Italian variety all this thanks to the cool surface of granite benchtops and thats what I want one for. I am not a chef just a simple humble cook and I always be one. Re: Granite benchtops what do you use them for? 20Aug 27, 2009 12:20 am grinder I wonder what do you people use granite benchtops for? Thanks I suspect people install them more for its aesthetic rather than functional purposes.
