Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Aug 16, 2009 8:50 pm We are thinking of having our open plan kitchen/living/dining as either all solid timber flooring or solid timber in the living/dining part and tiles in the kitchen part. Has anyone done the combination of timber and tiles in the one room? And if so could you post a picture and if you are happy with it? TIA Cheers Jane Re: Combined timber and tiled floor in open plan area?? 2Aug 17, 2009 1:33 pm Jane that is exactly what I am going to be doing. I am having tiles in our kitchen and wooden floors in the open area. Our kitchen is a U shape and I feel I can get away with doing it as it doesn't really affect the flow. The tiles I will be using will be the same as our laundry, which is off our kitchen. If you can post your plan, it will give people a better understanding of your layout. I would think if your kitchen is quite open it might be better to have all the same. Re: Combined timber and tiled floor in open plan area?? 3Aug 17, 2009 6:24 pm We are renovating our place with an L shaped kitchen, with an island and getting rid of the old lino and polishing up the timber floors throughout the house. I want the whole area, kitchen lounge and dining, to feel like one space. Re: Combined timber and tiled floor in open plan area?? 4Aug 17, 2009 6:58 pm We are also doing this. Hallway and meals area will be laminate and the u-shaped kitchen will be tiled. I would rather have laminate under our table than tiles, which we currently have. I think it'll look ok and will help to separate the kitchen from the other areas, which I see as a positive not neg. Good luck deciding. Kitchen tiles are they ceramic or porcelain? make sure they have a rough finish and they are anti slippery cramics are more prone to cracking from falling objects. Solid timer is just fine but make sure that the joints between the two floor are absolutely leveled otherwise you'll have a safety hazard in your hands and a potential liabililty, good looks sometimes can be deceiving. Re: Combined timber and tiled floor in open plan area?? 6Aug 18, 2009 12:30 pm My inlaws recently built a house and they have tiles in the entryway, off to the side is a carpeted lounge room and leads out the back to timber flooring. So from the front door you can see 3 different types of flooring. To me it looks very hodge podge. Re: Combined timber and tiled floor in open plan area?? 7Aug 18, 2009 2:37 pm Thanks for your replies. Nothing has been deicded - just considering all options as we are about to get into the design stage and costings of our extension. Considering it due to (1) cost & (2) potential damage to floorboards in the kitchen from hot things dropped etc. Cheers. Re: Combined timber and tiled floor in open plan area?? 8Aug 23, 2009 7:47 pm We had that exact same dilemma - I preferred the look of timber floors flowing throughout the house but practicality won over looks and we ended up going with tiles in the kitchen. We've got big white porcelain tiles with blackbutt timber floors - our laundry and WIP also extend from the kitchen and the same tiles are used. We were worried that it would look hodge podge but we're really happy with the way it has turned out. Pics are attached - although floors haven't been sanded and polished yet. In fact, I think it gives it some interest to delineate the different "rooms" if the floorplan allows it. I am currently battling about whether to do this as well. Anyone else have pics? Re: Combined timber and tiled floor in open plan area?? 10Aug 24, 2009 1:40 pm I must say I've never had any grief dropping hot things on timber floors in the kitchen, despite having them for 20 yrs. I do drop hard things - brittle things - on them occasionally, and it's true they can dent, depending on the hardness of the timber. I don't really regard this as a huge problem. Its possible to refinish them, I guess, but I haven't got to that point. CDC Housing Code 3 When to apply Floor Area external face of wall vs Gross Floor Area internal face of wall.
