At the moment it just goes into the cavity between floors and walls. Is this hygenic? Is this how it's always done? Any other options? I don't mind paying....but what do I need? Oh, we are most definitivelly getting a rangehood I'm just trying to work out how it will be vented out :S Re: Rangehood in a double storey house - how is this vented? 5Aug 10, 2009 1:52 pm We just built a 2 storey home. Being of Indian background, we need our kitchen to pump out all cooking fragrance outside. We got our rangehood ducted to throw out everything. The Rangehood goes in between the Ceiling and then it has a small cavity on the outside, that will exhaust all fumes. The builder threw this as a freebie (cost was $250), to get us to sign the contract. So is it in the middle of the room or on an external wall. Re: Rangehood in a double storey house - how is this vented? 7Aug 10, 2009 1:58 pm Our kitchen is in the middle of the room. It is the PD Brookvale. They've put a vent on the brickwork....they say the exhaust fumes will get out there....but who is going to tell the fumes to go out that way??? It will be like a maze....they can go all over between the ceiling/floor and wall cavity too. There is nothing to direct the fumes to that vent in the brickwork. Re: Rangehood in a double storey house - how is this vented? 10Aug 10, 2009 2:17 pm Overwhelmed, As far as I know, in Victoria, it is illegal now to vent into roof spaces or cavities between floors, I think something to do with grease build up and being a fire hazard (happy to be corrected if wrong!). Rangehoods must now be vented to the outside which is usually done during building or filtered and re-circulated back into the home. I think from reading this site a lot of people have commented the filters only last about 3 months. As for replacement costs, I have no idea. We are looking at building a double storey house and requested a quote to vent rangehood externally (~$400) My neighbours (double storey) vented their rangehood externally whilst renovating, but I think their rangehood was favourably located near to an external wall. Thus I would imagine the range hood would extend to ceiling height (and into the ceiling or space between ground and first floor) and then with flexible ducting it would eventually be vented through an external wall. To get some idea of what can be done have a look at the Schweigen range hood website. barkly Re: Rangehood in a double storey house - how is this vented? 16Aug 12, 2009 11:16 am mel_in_laurimar Hi all, I am currently in a double story rental, the rangehood is vented to outside ( not sure how) but something to also consider is where the vent is - ours is currently on the side wall on top of the clothesline facing down Mel This is the problem I will be facing in our new home. The kitchen is on an external wall, and the rangehood is vented to the outside just above the ideal space (north wall on the same side as Laundry door) for my clothes line. Not alot I can do about it, but remember to bring in the washing BEFORE I start cooking!! I guess the vents face downwards to prevent water/rain getting in. Although I was told with my particular style house the rangehood is always vented to the exterior (as the rangehood is on the exterior wall) but in every display home I looked at there was no vent! I made sure I asked in the contract for it to be vented outside just to be sure (and, yes, it's there)! I assume once the display homes are sold they would put the vent in as it's not necessary with the display. Dunno, just thinking out aloud!! Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!!
