A few comments on your kitchen design. 1) Your work triangle is 5.7 m, which is at the top end of the recommended 4 to 6 m ideal range. (This has nothing to do with the island's location.) 2) 1.7 m between the island is quite a gap. If you reduced this by 300 mm to 1.4 m you would get three benefits: a) Island closer to the work triangle b) your living area would be bigger c) your island would be better aligned to the adjacent wall in that the back of the bench would line up with the wall. This would be particularly important if there were no waterfall sides on your island bench. 3) I would consider putting the sink on the island. This would have several advantages: a) more against the wall benchspace which is better for storing toasters, sandwich makers and the like since they are out of the way and have ready access to power points b) The sink would be on the preferred food preparation area (the island) and the cook could look out at the rest of the house and therefore be better connected. c) The work triangle would not be 5.2 m and much closer to the middle of the ideal. If you move the sink then the dishwasher, garbage bin and plates storage should follow. Just one thing though.... what are Quote: waterfall sides on your island bench. Gav & Vanessa Building In Melbourne (Sth East Suburbs) http://www.arkraider.blogspot.com/ Rawdon Hill Construction - Canterbury Heritage Re: island bench, sink or cooker preference? 24Dec 03, 2007 3:21 pm Waterfall sides are when the bench continues along the sides. That is, the top and two short sides are all made of the same material and appear continous. So called because the bench top looks like it flows down the sides like a waterfall. I hope this makes sense. If not I'll find a waterfall bench on the forum (I think Matt has one). So no waterfall edges. Think how much nicer it would be to have the edge of the wall kitchen cupboards line up with the back end of the island bench. Smooth continuity. Not forgetting the other benefits mentioned above. Cheers, Casa But then we would have to get the meals end of the kitchen bench to match also... Although looking at Matts picture it doesn't appear as I do... I will think about that... looks nice... I was debating weather it would be an issue. Only time the pantry will be open is if I'm looking for something to cook, and if I'm cooking anyone in the kitchen is bound to annoy me so they'll be told to get out!
On second thought when the kids are older they will probably try to raid the pantry & block my path! Hmmm. I did notice too the way the diesign currently is allows free access to the fridge from dining / lougne area. Ah decisions, decisions. Re: island bench, sink or cooker preference? 34Dec 05, 2007 10:29 am Personally I would do it any way, as you can never have enough prep area. The only down side is it is more cleaning up to do once cooking is finished.
If you are like me, or most people when cooking, they hate other people in the kitchen, then you shouldn't have too many problems then, because they will know not to come in... Perhaps we need signs saying that She who cooks the most has right of way at all times
I did think about putting the stove in the island bench but quickly decided it was a bad idea, besides you only look at the stove when stirring or checking on something, so not exactly a good thing to socialize at the same time. I have seen some nifty designs with pull out / hidden low profile exausts etc, but really it's probably for those TV chefs! Then this thread caught my eye when I was thinking of the idea of sink in the island, but as it is I prefer pure bench space to do the prep rather than doing it at the sink. The negative I can see is the fact that all the dirty dishes or clean stacked up ones would be unsightly clutter, unless of course you have a dishwasher (not sure if that's likely at this stage). I know without one I like to leave the dishes to dry themselves on more than just rare occasions So the island is staying as an island / brekky bar. With young kids it should make a great area where we can prepare stuff together (cakes etc), well that's the idea anyway. It's kind of natural for a visitor to sit on a stool & drink their cuppa if you're going about your kitchen duties on the other side. A benefit I do see to an island bench regardless if it has a sink or not is the fact that you do away with some pain in the *** corner cuboards! My one pet hate! Re: island bench, sink or cooker preference? 36Dec 09, 2007 12:18 pm cuttingedgecabinets I would only ever have one in the island bench. As to which one it really depends on depth. If your having a 700-900mm deep island then I would only put the sink in it. If you island unit is between 1000-1200 then you can have a cooktop in it safely. Not sure of the exact measurements (they're somewhere in a pile of paper) but it looks ok to me size wise. This is the display. I'm now in the process looking at homes and I quite like the look of the stove in the island bench, but not sure whether its worth getting. Has anyone gotten one, lived with one or is planning on getthing is setup? What does everyone think about this? Thanks. Re: island bench, sink or cooker preference? 38Jun 04, 2008 3:46 pm Wonderland do you have young children? - if you do, I think cooktops in island benches can be dangerous, hot food cooking/ splattering near the bench stools, cooktop in middle of a traffic area etc.
I would have the cook top on the back wall well away from any seating or any traffic flow, even in an adults only household. Agreed, 4 yo DS often sits on the other side of the island bench watching DW cook. An island cooker would be dangerous and if you manage to "train" your kids away and they sit elsewhere they are no longer part of the daily cooking experience. mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: island bench, sink or cooker preference? 40Jun 04, 2008 5:33 pm No I dont have any kids at the moment, but we are planning on having one in a few years time.
That's one of the main thing that would put me off having a stove in the island bench.
