Re: Kitchen floor - timber or tiles 9Aug 12, 2009 9:19 pm dirkadirk Timber floors for me, biased probably due to being a carpenter. I think timber gives a real warmth under foot against the tiled option. We're planning to have timber floors in all our living areas including the kitchen. In my last house I had cork in the kitchen. It also gives a real warmth under foot against the tiled option. I actually had cork in every living area and bedroom in the house. Easy to clean but not very practical when it came to heavy furniture. I would have cork again in my kitchen as it is very easy to look after but I would not have it in a living area again! Also as vidiot said, it's easier on kids' heads That said, it seems that the trend currently is for timber or laminate flooring (if you can afford either one). I am having tiles for the entire back section of my house; 2 bathrooms, kitchen, informal dining and rumpus room. The rest of the house including bedrooms we are putting wood in. We are planning on extending up next year and that we more than likely be carpet. Re: Kitchen floor - timber or tiles 12Aug 13, 2009 8:51 am Tiles are easy to clean but the grout - not so easy. Getting it sealed will help. We just holidayed in an apartment with a tiled kitchen and I smashed a glass within 2 days of being there! Timber is much more forgiving on crockery as a PP said. Re: Kitchen floor - timber or tiles 13Aug 14, 2009 9:18 am We have floating timber floors in kitchen, entry, family, meal and rumpus rooms. Yes they are scratched by the cat, dented by people dropping things, but they still look good. We could have them sanded and re-sealed, but hey we live here and unless you look for all these flaws you would never notice them. They are also very easy to clean. Just a damp/wet mop and done. Have been told that depending on the length of area will need the expansion joint, to me that destroys the whole aesthetics of the floor. Can anybody fill me in, is it only on certain products or do they all need it? Re: Kitchen floor - timber or tiles 15Aug 14, 2009 11:14 pm Hi Jestibb, as far as I know all solid timber floors need the expansion joint if the whole area is more than 7m wide. It can be done in cork and if you put it in a doorway or somewhere like tht you'll hardly notice. Get a few quotes and they'll be able to show you where it needs to go. Not sure about engineering timber, I don't think they need any expansion joints. If mine has any they are certainly very unobtrusive as I have never noticed them... Does anyone have a pic of one so I know what to look for? Engineering timber is certainly a less fuss option, times cheaper to supply and install and better withstands humidity. 1 15923 They make the room much easier to clean for one, reflect more light (if light colour tiles are used), and you dont end up with dust on the top edge of tiles (cause most… 3 9612 To put anything over slate you will need to put self level compound over the entire area as slate various in thickness and is very un even.
