But anyway, bacteria is everywhere, if it's not at a level making you sick and you try and keep your kitchen clean, what's the problem? My kitchen looks clean, I use homemade tea tree sprays, change cloths and tea towels daily I think mine is fine. There is a show on Discovery H&H sometimes about kitchen nightmares and they say to use a spray bottle of water with 2 or 3 drops of bleach in as a spray and that is enough to disinfect bench tops and the sink etc. They also say not to use tea towels to dry dishes, air drying is better, because damp tea towels breed germs very quickly. Dishwasher better obviously... Re: Is it really this bad here ?! 5Jul 29, 2009 3:04 pm Thudd Bah! Keeps the immune system ticking over. I have to admit, as a way of combatting the yuckiness that festers in the average kitchen, I am not very eco friendly and use paper towel for almost everything. Go through about 3 rolls a week Whenever I visit my brother's place or my cousin's (2 of the grubbiest people I know) I always change their hand towels hanging in the bathroom or use dunny roll to dry my hands if I can't find any clean ones. And I never eat or drink anything while I am there...gives me the heebie jeebies Re: Is it really this bad here ?! 6Jul 29, 2009 3:18 pm _kelly_ Thudd Bah! Keeps the immune system ticking over. I never believe studies like this unless they quantify there data. How many people did they survey? 5 people on the corner of the street? "The first-of-its-kind study, which swabbed 140 homes from seven countries across the globe, found that:" That is only 20 homes in Australia, somehow I fail to see how that could give you a true representation of Australian cleaning habits. Also The Hygiene Council is founded and funded by the company that makes Dettol, Harpic, Easy Off Bam, Napisan and home cleaning products. Hmmm prejudiced much. Reading there website The Hygience Council has only met once to!!! Just a small bit of advertising going on here. Re: Is it really this bad here ?! 10Jul 29, 2009 5:50 pm Dragonfly _kelly_ Thudd Bah! Well, they have about 5 teeth between them...does that count? Kidding (not about the teeth)! I'm far from being anal about cleanliness but there's a line. Some people think it's OK to re-use towels for 7 days straight. Some use a Chux to wash their dishes...wipe their sink...and clean their cooktop. I just think that's WRONG Personally I use vinegar, bi-carb, elbow grease and paper towel to keep things clean...all that other gunk is just a waste of money. I wash the towels once a week so they are used for 7 days. Is that wrong? I mean how dirty can they get when you are drying yourself after you've washed yourself in the shower. And I also use the chux to wash the dishes, wipe the bench and the cooktop. I didn't know it WRONG. To be honest, I'm trying to figure out why it's wrong... Re: Is it really this bad here ?! 15Jul 29, 2009 8:15 pm The key to keeping cleaning clothes OK to use is to rinse and then let dry - simple really. Not use a towel for even 7 days? Gawd, no wonder we are short on water with people doing so much washing!! 'A bottle of wine contains more philosophy than all the books in the world.' Could be worse I suppose, I could be blamed for the water shortage I don't use a towel for seven days, I might if I could get it to dry properly in my bathroom. I have a cold bathroom and a towel gets stinky after two uses. The kids have warmer bathroom so they use one for maybe 5 days, unless it gets left on the floor and trampled/and or peed on..(two year old in toilet training mode..). I really don't want to hang my towel out on the line after every use just to get 7 days out of it. I justify extra washing by having an efficient machine and I don't have a dryer. And the towels sitting waiting to get washed get double use to clean up a spill on the floor or wipe clean the cat's litter box after washing it. Were we separated at birth I have a "relative" that is a clean freak, and a freak too, she has the anti-bacterial stuff on hand 24/7 and it bugs the living hell out of me I refuse to use it when it's offered to me purely because "she" does I know I'm petty but I love being petty sometimes, oh and her kids are sick all the time....and I also do the same with the sponges. Re: Is it really this bad here ?! 19Jul 30, 2009 7:17 am My sister had a holiday job when she was 18, as a mother's help. This woman couldn't cope with her young twins, and hired my sister to be there all day and feed, dress, play with the kids. That was fine....but the mother spent most of the day cleaning the house. Floors, benchtops, bathrooms, windowsills - every surface in the place -with Dettol. Funny thing, those kids were always sick. No wonder she couldn't cope - all the extra work she was making for herself with unecessary cleaning, and sick kids to boot. My kids ate dirt off the floor when they were crawling. I always shrugged and said it was "clean dirt". My house is clean enough for me, and my kids have always been healthy. And Jo, I change our towels probably twice a week, sometimes three times.... As it is, I can't keep up with the washing and the water bill is huge enough, thanks. Re: Is it really this bad here ?! 20Jul 30, 2009 7:28 am Oh - and I heard that "news" story on the radio yesterday and laughed. I always wonder about the depth and accuracy of the studies behind these things. Not to mention the quality of journalism that reports these things, without mentioning relevant details like the fact that the body that funded and controlled the study is a multinational cleaning product manufacturer. Nope, let's just report an attention-grabbing headline, because it's all about ratings... Cynical? Who, me? Remember the study that "revealed" that Australia is the fattest nation in the world? The reports didn't mention that participants were not weighed or measured by impartial third parties. From what I recall, the data was collected by asking people to provide their own weight and measurements. I'd guess that the Australian participants were just the most honest.
