Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jul 22, 2009 7:19 pm We just moved in to our new house, and we've found that the hot water from our main supply (electric boosted solar HWS) takes far too long to reach our kitchen sink and wastes about 7 litres of cold water while we wait. Maybe they should start awarding BASIX points for shorter hot water pipes. Does anyone here know about solutions to this problem, perhaps a quick-recovery hot water tank under the sink? Re: Under sink hot water? 2Jul 22, 2009 9:04 pm HellDad, we think this is going to happen to us as well. We had to move our HWS to the opposite side of the house, DH is talking to a friend (as I type) re this very issue, and how he is going to avoid it. (Friend is also a C customer). I can have a look tomorrow as I will be at the house, don't know how good it is yet cause we haven't moved in. I hate wasting water, it really annoys me. There is a loop which feeds hot water around past every tap in the house, then back to the tank. It is a technique used in large buildings with a central hot water tank. There is a pump that circulates hot water around the loop. When you turn on a tap, the water in the loop is already hot, you don't wait for it to cover the whole distance from the tank. To modify an existing house I fear would be horribly expensive. Built the C£arend0n Cambridge: Moved in. Happy campers. Re: Under sink hot water? 5Jul 22, 2009 10:34 pm HellDad, he is at the planning stage so he has asked for an extra hot water system to be installed, so one services one side of the house and the other for the other side. There is also some other thing that DH has not been able to clearly explain to me so that I can explain to you. Sorry really of no help to you at all. Gee wiz. I look forward to what danma has to tell you.(I think that is what DH is talking about) www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Under sink hot water? 6Jul 23, 2009 10:59 am I have just gone over & taken a pic of it for you, it is quite small as it fits in the powder room vanity & it has a button on the wall. I am going back over & I will have a look & see if the instruction manual is there. From memory I think that it cost $725 in our tender, so I would assume that the builder would have a mark up on it. Maybe you could google it & something might come up about it. We are still a few weeks away from moving in so I won't know how good it is till then. The Dux Readyhot gadget is very interesting because it doesn't actually heat water, just saves the cold water that would otherwise have been wasted by recirculating it back to the hot water tank, and it's not as complex as a full circulation system. It remains to be seen if the pressure control valves on our tank would be compatible. The Zip Tudor is also interesting, but it uses energy to heat water at the sink, as does the Dux small HWS I found elsewhere on their website. Built the C£arend0n Cambridge: Moved in. Happy campers. Re: Under sink hot water? 10Jul 23, 2009 6:24 pm No problems Helldad, I was told that they are really good & save heaps of water that would usually go straight down the drain. I would think that you probably wouldn't get your money back on it but it feels good to not waste that water.
