Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jul 18, 2009 7:22 pm We got the plans for our kitchen today, but I'm wondering if we should change a few things. 1. We're going to have the omega range hood with a curved glass top. On the plans, the cabinets to either side are about 3cm away from the range hood. Should we: a. Leave it as is? b. Get rid of the 2 cabinets closest to it? c. Reduce the size of the cabinets, and by how much? 2. The microwave space. Do you think it's too high? I dont want it sitting on the benchtop, and I dont really want it below the benchtop. If I ask them to lower it a bit, will it make the space below useless? Annie Thanks We got to walk through the house, (frame is up!), for the first time today and it's incredible how big it feels even now without any solid walls! Re: What would you do? 4Jul 18, 2009 7:55 pm FAB FAB FAB love the size ok this is just my opinion If it was me I would be inclined to get rid of the two cupboards closest to the range hood fat build up will get underneath those cabinets which isn't pretty and also the range hood is glass and a feature in itself I worry that it all looks to boxed in by leaving it. 2nd point regarding Microwave I would leave it the way it is, it is still lower than what the buttons would be on the range hood and perfect to still have use of the under bench. All and All beautiful well done. But really think of the cupboard thing next to the Hood as I feel you have alot of cupboard space anyways and it wont be lost if you get rid of them. Hope this helps Also you may have this already but we choose to put a double plug in the Walk in Pantry this is where we have the kettle and toaster just to have clean surfaces. I recently did it to our house now, I recently renovated alot of the house and designed a new Kitchen. Now after doing this we have decided to build another home this lovely kitchen get's to be loved by a renter lets hope they love and look after it like i do. Like you i dont want it sitting on the bench but also didnt want it up at the same level as the top cupboards as it is a bit of a safety issue with hot liquids etc being that high up. I moved it to under the bench but dont like it there either. I guess plenty of people have the microwave up at that height with no safety problems but also i didnt want it up high because i want my upper cupboards to be symetrical either side of my rangehood. You have plenty of room, have you thought about putting the microwave in the first cupboard before the pantry. you could then either have drawers underneath and then cupboards ontop. If i hade more space i would do that but as it is, the decision is not made for me. Your kitchen design does look good as is. i'm just an over thinker indecisive type. That kitchen pic SUH just posted is fantastic. Makes me want white yet again. Re: What would you do? 7Jul 18, 2009 8:57 pm hey mango, I had exactly the same problems with my choice of location for microwave. Unlike DS&G, I had a relatively small kitchen and I ended up with a difficult decision. I decided on putting my microwave on top of my wall oven, and because I wanted a 2nd oven, I got an underbench too. I've seen this done from time to time, but I'm really not happy with it, I just didn't have many choices... I hope the microwave isn't too high! A thankful person is a happy person. I like the idea of the power point in the pantry. I've made a note of that lol SuH I like your set up, I have always had cupboards over my cooktops and never had any major grease build up, also I have seen many canopy rangehoods close to the overheads and they don't looked boxed in at all. That kitchen looks lovely, especially with those cabinets, SuH I think I'm still inclined to have a bit more space on either side of the hood though. I've photoshopped the plan a bit to have a better idea of how it might look. Mango Hi there, I'm having exactly the same problem with the microwave placement in my kitchen design. So I dont really worry about pulling out heavy bowls of hot liquids. I think we might end up leaving it where it is...maybe lol... "sigh" I dunno... That cupboard beside the corner pantry is going to be a broom closet, so it wouldnt really work to cut it in half lol, but thanks for the idea Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: What would you do? 9Jul 18, 2009 9:13 pm Re: What would you do? 10Jul 18, 2009 9:19 pm One more suggestion. i def like the extra space around the rangehood but i would make the upper cupboards slightly bigger and just bring the distance between the range and the cupboards in a bit. it just looks a fraction too big at the moment. I have kitchens on the brain at the moment. cant wait till i make some firm decisions about my own plan Re: What would you do? 11Jul 18, 2009 9:31 pm Re: What would you do? 12Jul 18, 2009 11:21 pm Love your nice, big kitchen. As for the arrangement, I'll add my 2 cents - I like the first one best. I don't think the microwave is too high. I also like having the cupboards butting up to the rangehood. It looks a bit disjointed otherwise. Judie Re: What would you do? 13Jul 19, 2009 9:48 am LOVE IT!!! TO ME THAT IS PERFECT, it has a nice flow, it's grand, functional, and well just bloody gorgeous. LATROBE 320 WITH DENNIS FAMILY HOMES Re: What would you do? 14Jul 19, 2009 12:04 pm lol I feel like I should take a bow! I think we've decided to have the cabinets about 10 to 15cm away from the glass. I dont think it will be too far to make it feel disjointed but still far enough away to give the rangehood a bit of space for a showpiece. Also, the splashback tiles will help to tie it all in and keep it from feeling disjointed as well... I think... Re: What would you do? 15Jul 20, 2009 1:16 pm our kitchen will be the same layout. The only thing different was we went with a standard pantry, not a corner and at bench height in the corner put and appliance cupboard opening up onto the bench. you could do this for your microwave depending on the swing of the door.
