Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jul 08, 2009 10:24 am I've never used a rangehood ... didn't have one in the kitchen I grew up in, didn't have one in the kitchen in my house ... now I'm getting one in my new kitchen ... but ... I don't know what to buy because I've got no way of working out what will work for me. I am mostly a baker / dessert maker ... I don't stirfry much ... fumes would be pasta cooking on the stove top and the occasional steak ... but that's about it! I've got a falcon 110cm double cooker going in ... so I need a wide rangehood and it will be undermounted. So going shopping ... I'm looking at all of the rangehoods ... and they all seem kinda OK from my perspective of total ignorance! Obviously some look a bit less strong than others ... but ... they are the cheaper ones! Does anyone have any suggestions for me to choose between $400 and $1200 ones (obviously there are much fancier ones, but I don't have the budget or inclination to spend more on something I currently don't value!). Am I going to put one in and love it once I've used it and wish I spent more on a quieter one? Or could it sit there and be used so rarely I'll wish I spent more on the kitchen sink?! Ones I'm looking at: Robinhood - $399 Westinghouse - 70cm - $440 Blanco - 70cm - $655 AEG - 75cm - $1059 Highland - 80cm - $1029 Neff - 73cm - $1099 Falmec - 80cm - $1139 Big difference when you're looking at twice the price for something! thanks for any advice! I'm just struggling on this decision ... the rest aren't so hard. Re: Rangehood - for someone who doesn't use one! 2Jul 08, 2009 10:35 am You need to look at their suction... George isnt with me so I cant get much technical then that! I think from memory he says to look for one at about 1000whatever-it-is... Re: Rangehood - for someone who doesn't use one! 3Jul 08, 2009 10:42 am I don't think any of those have 1000 m3/h ... they range from about 500 - 800. I think I'd definitely have to go over $1500 to get that much suction ... not willing to spend that much given I don't even know if I'll use it! In order of priority: a) design - canopy > pullout > island b) airflow (high temp cooking need high airflow e.g. stirfry vs simmering) - m3/hr c) ease of cleaning - stainless steel dishwasher-friendly grilles, smooth external surfaces d) noise - measured in db e) fancy stuff - bright lights, run on timer Re: Rangehood - for someone who doesn't use one! 5Jul 08, 2009 11:03 am Look up the Choice website, there's a report comparing rangehoods. From the website you'd have to pay for it, but note the issue #, and go photocopy it at your local library We've just got one, >800m3 I think, that you can hardly hear when it's on, for $450. I could tell you whether it's good once we've moved in - in about 6 weeks... For us it had to cope with stirfrys but noise was important too. For you I think noise will be more important or you'll never use it at all. Wish I could remember the brand... dammit... might be Asko or something like that. Im pretty sure George sells one within that price range with 1000m3/h.... Ill have to check Try not to go under 800m3/h.. Re: Rangehood - for someone who doesn't use one! 7Jul 08, 2009 2:58 pm I have a Blanco 700 under cupboard exhaust and I really really like it. There are about 3 suction strengths, maybe 4 the lowest suction is silent and good, the next is just a tad louder and very good and the jumbo, which you may not use, is fantastic but loudish, but I don't use that one much either. The lighting is good and it's easy to clean. Re: Rangehood - for someone who doesn't use one! 8Jul 08, 2009 9:48 pm The problem is going to be that you have a 110cm cooker so in theory you should have the same size rangehood to cover every aspect of the cooktop. I have the 110cm Falcon cooker as well and your choices for a rangehood around the same size is very limited. Falcon increased the price of their rangehoods in the last 6mths from $899 to $1899 - which is absolutely ridiculous when they are basically the same model. So your cheapest choices are a Robinhood one for around $900 (Good Guys price) or then they jump up to $1200 for a stronger Robinhood or a DeLonghi. After that they skyrocket to the Falcon one and then onto Smeg / Miele etc which all are around the $3k. I even asked a custom rangehood place how much to make one to suit and they quoted over $2k. Some things are worth waiting for. Looking at it, I was thinking that because part of the top is the electric warming plate - that wouldn't really create fumes ... so I could get away with a rangehood that was smaller, placed over the side of the burners Give you've got the cooker - is this very faulty reasoning?!! Re: Rangehood - for someone who doesn't use one! 10Jul 09, 2009 8:07 pm If you are having overhead cabinets then yes. Any heat rising from the stove will affect your cupboards above. Some manufacturers would probably void the warranty. Mine isn't installed yet - we are only up to lockup but I will be going with a Robinhood rangehood that will safely cover the whole cooktop. I actually do have the Falcon rangehood but it isn't the right colour so am needing to buy a new one - and kicking myself I didn't do so 8mths ago when the Falcon ones weren't ridiculous prices Some things are worth waiting for. The Qasair ones are completely out of my price range . Now trying to decide whether larger size vs greater suction is more important to me! That sucks! Hope it all works out.
