Contracted completion date 24 July 2010. What's today's date????? Re: Which Kitchen do you prefer?? 25Jun 18, 2009 9:17 pm Anna1 Where's your dishwasher!!!???? Well mine's in her room doing homework at the moment Re: Which Kitchen do you prefer?? 26Jun 19, 2009 10:19 pm penguin I guess i forgot to mention that the splashback is a window, so IF sink does stay on the back wall there will be a view when washing dishes (although that is not MY job Quote: "Why not the fridge after the wall ?" I am not sure what you mean by this beegeers? I think beegeers means something like this: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Correct me if I'm wrong Beegeers! Re: Which Kitchen do you prefer?? 27Jun 20, 2009 7:59 am Have just had another thought about your layout. With the sink on the back wall and the dishwasher on the island you are going to be rinsing plates and turning around to put them in the island. Will be messy. Water splashed on floor, food particles dropping. I think either switch the sink to the island bench or the dishwasher to the back wall. Re: Which Kitchen do you prefer?? 28Jun 20, 2009 8:45 am Macy The one thing that caught my eye that I do not like much is the oven next to the pantry. This was the decider for my vote also. Re: Which Kitchen do you prefer?? 29Jun 20, 2009 9:36 am I can understand why you have included Option A as I prefer a wall oven also. In my current 28 year old kitchen (to be demolished in 5 weeks) I have the same setup with the oven next to a pantry and then the fridge. It has been a nuisance but only because we have cedar doors which scratch easily. There have not been huge issues trying to access both at once as the oven is closed virtually all the time and you learn to have a routine so there is not a clash. For example, no-one goes to the fridge while someone is opening the oven. However, no matter how often we told our teenage/adult children to be careful, they often opened the oven door whilst the pantry door was not fully closed and hence the oven handle has scratched deeply into our pantry doors. Also, when trying to clean the oven it is difficult as you have limited access due to the pantry side being so close. I don't think that these issues make this option impossible but you may not have thought of them. However, the biggest problem for me is that you then have the cooktop so close as well. If you are cooking various items on the cooktop as well as in the oven it will be dangerous. I do not know about your routine but in my kitchen, when it is time to serve a meal such as a baked dinner, my husband takes care of the oven side whilst I look after the cooktop and microwave items. If we were both trying to do this in Option A there would be the danger of a collision. Again, this is only a reflection of how we cook and our routine so it may not be a problem for you. It has taken us nearly 3 months to get our final kitchen design (and threats from my husband to shoot me if I change my mind again ) so I really do feel for you. Yep D&SG thats exactly what I meant that way you can make pantry bigger or get more bench space Re: Which Kitchen do you prefer?? 32Jun 25, 2009 12:48 pm I don't think you can put a dishwasher in the island bench, without putting pipework through the concrete slab in the floor (costly!). Normally the dishwasher is next to the sink, so that they share the same waste, and the water supply connects to the tap. I prefer something like the below configuration - where you're not losing all that corner space. Re: Which Kitchen do you prefer?? 33Jun 25, 2009 1:17 pm Our kitchen configuration in the corner is almost the same as Option A and I haven't found it too much of a hassle. But we do have a U shaped kitchen with the U being at the other end..it would join between your island and the end of the bench along the wall. I prefer a wall oven too and we plan to redo our kitchen sometime (sigh) and will probably keep the same configuration except with one of those diagonal corner pantry cupboards. Normally the dishwasher is next to the sink, so that they share the same waste, and the water supply connects to the tap. I prefer something like the below configuration - where you're not losing all that corner space. That would block out 1/3 of the windows. Given a choice between sacrificing light or corner space, I'd go with corner space. Without knowing what those windows open out to, there might be the issue of showing the back of your cabinets to the street I think option B is most practical. However, are there currently water pipes going over to the island for the dishwasher? I'm guessing not, and if the cost becomes an issue how about Option B but with the window benchtop layout of Option A? - mirror image swap the position of the oven and sink - put the dishwasher under the drainer This clusters the "eating" stuff (pantry, fridge, cooktop, oven) together and the "cleaning" stuff together (sink, dishwasher) but not so close that they get in the way of each other like Option A. I'm always dashing to the pantry or fridge when cooking over the cooktop. And sometimes things come out of the dishwasher with a pool of water, so I put it on the drainer directly above it to dry. Re: Which Kitchen do you prefer?? 35Jul 10, 2009 10:00 pm I much prefer wall ovens so I would choose that option. Easier to get stuff in & out and also abit safer if you have little ones. I would definitely move the sink to the island if you can. Our rental while we are building has a sink on the back wall and I hate having my back to everything when I'm washing dishes and someone's comments about moving things from the sink to the dishwasher are very valid. Just another thought for you, have you considered moving the oven to the wall next to the pantry door where the fridge is and putting the fridge at the left hand end of the bench? Same position and everything just no door worries. I wouldn't want a wall oven in a corner, though. If I was putting the sink and stovetop on the same bench I would have the sink on the left and the stovetop on the right where it is more protected. What I'm thinking is that people usually want to dump things on kitchen benches - it is much more convenient to drop dirty plates etc in a sink close to the door than to have to walk past a potentially hot stovetop to put them down. Also, if you want to put a bag of groceries on the end of a bench, I would rather the bag "toppled" towards a sink than a hot cooktop. As for my personal preference - sink and dishwasher in the island so you can wash dishes, peel veges etc while talking to people in the adjacent room. Just my 2c, Kylie Re: Which Kitchen do you prefer?? 37Jul 19, 2009 9:40 am Hi I prefer B as having the under bench oven opens the kitchen up it looks a bit top heavy in version A. A couple of points you might find useful, My sister has this type of pantry as well but I think you would find it easier to access if you reversed the door like she has. That way your not trapped between the cupboards and door. Also I see you have overheads above your sink. I'm reasonably tall and I would find that really annoying if leaning over the sink scrubbing pots or whatever. Think tumble dryer over washing machine I bang my head all the time. Personally I also don't like the dishwasher on the Island bench. I would put it under the sink otherwise every time you need to rinse or scrub something before putting it in the dishwasher you have to carry it still dripping across the floor to pop in the dishwasher. No. It's not original. Circa early to mid 90s would be my guess and maybe even as late as early 2000s 1 6631 Thanks mate. Yeah good points! Leaning towards Option 3 to get a bit extra space in the cabinets but not going too crazy high (and expensive). Would require a mini… 13 39682 Black on light wood does look good.
