I always thought that this was for electric tops only and that gas needed at least 650mm...but I can't seem to find a reference to it in my kitchen standards. You wouldn't want to go much higher than this though, as most domestic rangehoods are flat out functioning effectively re. suction even at this distance. I would appreciate if someone else will be able to provide more detailed information...especially a Standards reference. Cheers, Earl Re: How much space between cooktop and rangehood? 4May 08, 2007 7:04 pm Hi Mek -
Minimum 600mm. But anything between 600 -650mm is adequate. What kind of splashback do you have? If it is tiled - work of the tile module - so that you don't end up with an obvious irregular half tile at the rangehood. Re: How much space between cooktop and rangehood? 5May 08, 2007 8:51 pm Hi Kylie, splashback will be glass.
Geez I'm having a hard time with this kitchen... This is what happens if you fall in love with a $70,000 kitchen, but have a small space, not a big budget and an accountant husband... But I still allow 650 for gas though, I have been to a few insurance jobs where the rangehood has caught on fire!!! Re: How much space between cooktop and rangehood? 7May 09, 2007 10:23 am When determining the height above the cooktop for rangehood installation you must check with the rangehood manufacturers specifications.
Even though Australian Standards call for a minimum of 600mm clearance some manufacturers, for instance Westinghouse, will advise you to place your rangehood at least 650mm from a gas cooktop. Re: How much space between cooktop and rangehood? 8May 09, 2007 11:54 am renomart They changed the specs recently Earl. Aargh...this is what I really love about this industry...can you point me to somewhere I can find the most current standards? And yeah...good point about the combustibility issue - this is why I thought it was mandatory to have 650mm for gas. Cheers, Earl Re: How much space between cooktop and rangehood? 10May 09, 2007 12:49 pm Hey thanks for that...not having a go, but even I knew about that list...
My point is that (as I think I wrote to you a while ago) I recently handed over the readies for AS/NZS 4386.1 + 2 : 1996 to make sure that I was designing to the correct specs; and that is what I quoted above re the 600mm clearance. As said, I cant find anything to indicate that there were additional standards for gas hobs. 1996 is the latest document I can find - so what am I missing here? Looking at the instructions for one of our demonstration gas tops it is stated that installation must comply to AS 5601 (AG 601). Do you have any inforamtion about this standard? As always lotsa cheers, Earl Re: How much space between cooktop and rangehood? 11May 09, 2007 1:06 pm Hehehe... It sorta crossed my mind a few times that you would have access to the standards. At least the link is up for visitors to this forum to see.
Sorry, I dont have access to AS 5601 (AG 601) You are not missing anything with the current standards. I am sure that the current standards (cant get to them right now) do not differentiate between gas or electric hobs, it just states a minimum 600 clearance I recently installed a Westinghouse canopy hood and in the installation instructions (yes, I do read them ) they stated a minimum of 650mm clearance over a gas hob. ....must stop using too many smilies in a post.
