Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 May 26, 2009 1:57 pm Kitchen Layout I am in the process of working out a layout for a new kitchen. Am having trouble with two horizontal windows. They are not high enough to place overhead cupboards below and are causing me some challenges. Have included a picture of my abomination of a kitchen as it stands now. I have a bigger window on the wall that is to the left in the picture. This is where my plumbing is and I plan to leave it on this wall, with a row of overheads along to that window. Am thinking I will have to move the windows on the back wall, but because of expenses would like to find the simplest solution. Our house is made from Besser cement blocks and the windows would have to have new lintels installed if totally moved. I do like the idea of window splashbacks but think this might be expensive if I need to go to council, get engineers report etc. One solution would be to turn the windows vertical, two thin windows either side of a rangehood. Anyone got any ideas? Re: Kitchen layout challenge 2May 26, 2009 9:21 pm I love that oven lol, its great! I will have a think and see what i can recommend Kitchens are like finger prints, no two are ever the same!! The second pic I really like the colours etc but am trying to imagine it with a vertical window perhaps no more that 25cm wide either side of the rangehood. If the windows were vertical and began from the same height as where they are now sitting it would be cheaper wouldn't it? Also with this idea I could maybe have a downlight fitted into the bulkhead above the window. Would love to hear some ideas from all you creative kitchen-mad people out there. Re: Kitchen layout challenge 5May 26, 2009 9:40 pm Do you need those two small windows for light? if not could you put overheads on walls by blocking windows out and vent rangehood out the wall? Re: Kitchen layout challenge 6May 26, 2009 10:54 pm No, don't really need the windows but am on a bush block and look out to gumtrees and lots of birdlife and we love seeing that everyday. Would love to retain that if we possibly could. My house is openplan; kitchen at the rear and living room at the front that has windows with waterviews. Did think of blocking windows and adding a large skylight to retain an airy feeling but it is the nice views of treetops and birdlife that we really like. Re: Kitchen layout challenge 7May 26, 2009 11:21 pm I think having the windows vertical instead of horizontal will be a great idea. It will allow you to appreciate you bush views more and create an illusion of extra height. As you mentioned the rangehood can then be placed in between and vented appropriately. I just love the control panels on old ovens and microwaves, they are classic design pieces:) Kitchens are like finger prints, no two are ever the same!! I wonder if you can do something like this and keep the windows where they are... just have their position sit in one set of the shelves? Am going to have overheads right around the walls and a bulkhead above that jutts out a little to have some downlights in it. I am going to live with it a while and if it is too dark, or looks too claustrophic I can add a skylight in the future. So now am thinking; white gloss cabinets above and below except for a wall of charcoal grey gloss that has the fridge and walloven/microwave stack in it. It is a u shaped kitchen, so two walls of white and one of grey. Have decided to add some open shelving in a couple of areas amongst the white overheads with Bean Shoot green splashback on the back wall of the shelves. Hoping this will give the kitchen a bit of pizazz. Have chosen a black and charcoal grey tile for the splashback. Am toying with the idea of having a piece of glass splashback just behind the cooktop, in black and butting the tiles up to either side of it. Does anyone have a hanging utensil rack at the back of their cooktop or is it too dangerous to lean over it etc? You never have a fridge against wall as you’ve drawn. The doors can’t open past 90 degrees and it’s difficult and maybe impossible to remove drawers 2 16840 Hi, We're building a double-storey in Perth and I'm undecided with the kitchen sink situation.
