Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jun 02, 2009 7:43 pm Just wondering from those that have just done their kitchens - has laminate improved over the years?? I had laminate in my other house and have it here in my rental and its shocking!! I can't afford $3200 to go up to vinyl wrap, Any of it look good or does it still look cheap and nasty?? The colours and styles (and combinations of finishes) can really make a kitchen look terrific. For benchtops, I love engineered stone, but it's waaaay out of my price range too. For my kitchen, I was inspired by monkey68 and mrsrusty and their Laminex DiamondGloss benchtops. They look fantastic and are only marginally more expensive than regular Laminex. Plus they're harder wearing than the regular Laminex surfaces. I had to go and talk to my sales guy today about some other kitchen stuff and I did ask him about diamond gloss and he said it all depends what you call a little bit more. He knows how tight on funds I am and he said he didn't think it would be in my budget. If its only a few extra 100 I might consider it..but Its not looking promising Deposits paid 29/4/09 Land settlement 12/08/09 Build contract signed 24/08/09 Colours done 28/09/09 BLOG-http://www.eljaysbuild.blogspot.com/ Re: Laminate bench tops and cupboards 6Jun 04, 2009 8:41 pm Just checked my variation documents from my builder for my kitchen changes. OK, when I said 'marginally more expensive'.... it's slightly more than I remember For my kitchen, including the waterfall edge, the total extra cost was $500. That also includes the optional "DiamondGloss Square Edging" which is a special edging strip to give it a more "granite-like" appearance and reduce visible joins. Hope this info helps. Re: Laminate bench tops and cupboards 7Jun 04, 2009 9:01 pm Eljay, there was a thread on here before about whether to upgrade to stone or just have laminate benches - personally I am quite happy with laminate and so were many others. We did a kitchen reno in our old house and did laminate benches, that was back in 2000, sold house in 2008, bench tops were still good as new - sure, stone may be tougher but unless you are going to do anything really silly with your benchtops - like dice up meat without a cutting board , they are fine Re visible joins, unless your bench top is very plain, the joins are only visible if you really look, never found that a problem. Re visible joins, unless your bench top is very plain, the joins are only visible if you really look, never found that a problem. I'm not really interested in stone, never have been. I'm a pretty simple, easy to please kinda gal...I just love the look of the gloss and was told that I'd have to have diamond gloss laminate for it. I think its the next step up to the run of the mill laminate isn't it? I actually really like the wood grain laminate but would love to get the gloss doors. I haven't actually seen the newer laminates only the really old awful stuff thats about 15 - 25 years old. In my rental at the moment I have an awful baby vomit yellow colour and its just hideous lol Deposits paid 29/4/09 Land settlement 12/08/09 Build contract signed 24/08/09 Colours done 28/09/09 BLOG-http://www.eljaysbuild.blogspot.com/ Re: Laminate bench tops and cupboards 9Jun 04, 2009 9:27 pm Yes, my experience of laminate being good goes back to laminate within last 10 years - obviously you have to compare apples with apples, not worry about the quality of laminates 25 years ago And, of course, there is a very wide range of colours - you dont have to do yellow vomit !!!! If you like the glossy look, diamond gloss may be the thing for you Re: Laminate bench tops and cupboards 10Jun 04, 2009 10:50 pm hi eljay - also bear in mind that pauls $500.00 includes a waterfall edge (i want one ) so that adds quite a bit extra to the cost...my quote to have my kitchen, ensuite and bathroom benchtops in diamond gloss was only $240.00 - i have chosen to have caesarstone instead for the kitchen, but just thought this might help you... 2014 - Prepping to build the Soho 4 with Plantation homes, industrial style 2009 - Built the Brampton with Coral Homes viewtopic.php?f=31&t=15399&start=280 Re: Laminate bench tops and cupboards 11Jun 04, 2009 11:06 pm Oh really?? wow!! Our kitchen is 2-pac, which was part of a special deal we took, but I was so close to asking them to change it to Laminex! I still wonder if I should have, but the kitchen is already made. I'm sure you'll find a combination that you love and can afford. I'm on the brink of tears at the moment. My broker is just hopeless and now the land has come back $10,000 under! I do get a $6k rebate if I settle on time, which is not looking hopeful especially if I change brokers at this point! mrs_martin Eljay Any of it look good or does it still look cheap and nasty?? Thanks hope not! (excuse the mess) WOW is that really laminate???????????????????? I'm impressed!! I really like that, very much! The 2nd block i had a contract on (I had 3 blocks before I finally got lucky! )came back with a val that was $12,000.00 short, the bank wouldn't budge and neither would the developer, so i pulled out of the contract...the $6000 rebate may help but are you happy to cover the extra $4000? 2014 - Prepping to build the Soho 4 with Plantation homes, industrial style 2009 - Built the Brampton with Coral Homes viewtopic.php?f=31&t=15399&start=280 Re: Laminate bench tops and cupboards 17Jun 06, 2009 10:31 pm Hi Mrs Martin What colour are your cupboards - we have found it so hard to find the "right" coloured grey laminate, and yours is pretty close to perfect. I find it so hard to pick from those little samples. With the builder, as long as they haven't done soil tests yet you can leave the deposit with them and transfer the deposit to your new block of land - this is what i did, as i had placed a new deposit on a new block within a week of the 2nd block falling through. when i chose my 2nd block though i was very careful - i chose a block that was only 200m2 smaller than the 2nd block, but it was also $17,000.00 cheaper, still in a new estate in the same suburb. i also told the builder to wait until i gave them the go ahead to do the soil tests - i wanted to wait for the valuation to come back for the third block before letting them spend my money! let me know what happens loree, this building thing is crazy isn't it!! 2014 - Prepping to build the Soho 4 with Plantation homes, industrial style 2009 - Built the Brampton with Coral Homes viewtopic.php?f=31&t=15399&start=280 Hi, Can anyone give me approx. price for overhead cupboards.
