Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 May 25, 2009 2:15 pm Hello everyone, What a relief to find this forum, I'm sure it's going to be a very helpful tool for us, and look forward to chatting with you all. Ok, now have we got some work to do. We have recently purchased a house that we've been living in and has been in my family since 1991. A very tired house with lots needing attention, but we're starting with the kitchen as our cabinet maker friend is moving away in July, so straight into we go. Now we've had our friend over and are stewing on his ideas, but we'd like any input from others so we can obtain different perspectives and 'unthought' of options. We are looking at purchasing a new oven (electric, under bench) and cooktop (4 burner gas, square, not long). And sink is staying where it is, but upgraded. We're having fun reading all the topics and pics through out this forum and look forward to becoming part of the community. Let the ideas start flowing. Thanks for reading everyone. Graeme & Sarah Re: Hello all, what to do now..... 2May 25, 2009 2:31 pm WELCOME!!! Graeme and Sarah. You have a great canvas to star with there. Is it possible to add a tall pantry cupboard somewhere, possibly a double door? What about where the little bench space is, where the kettle is in that picture? I also think that adding drawers as opposed to cupboards are an advantage. By that I mean deep drawers for pots, plates etc., much easier than leaning down to cupboards. I will think some more, but you will no doubt be inundated with great ideas from the very smart lot at H1, there are few kitchen experts to so you'll be right! www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Hello all, what to do now..... 3May 25, 2009 2:57 pm Thanks for the warm welcome, I thought about posting the ideas from our friend, but i didn't want my first post to get too long winded. Answer to your suggestions, we are looking at getting drawers instead of cupboards, our mate recommended them for the same reasons you stated. We are looking forward to having a pantry "finally" and were thinking about having it where the fridge is, so a floor to ceiling pantry, but with drawers on the bottom (for ease of bending/ reaching etc). The fridge to go where the oven is currently. New oven to go in corner of kitchen (where old drawers are currently, but have oven and cook top in corner, with 700mm bench top on right, and microwave underneath. with a couple of drawers below or small cupboard for appliances). At first i thought "oven in corner ?????"... what do you guys think. We just want to maximize bench space that we've never had in the past, ie where cook top is at moment. What do you all think about having overhead cupboards above main 'to be' bench area (cook top atm), will this create crowding in room/ bench area. I was personally thinking only shallow ones, maybe 300- 350 deep? Re: Hello all, what to do now..... 4May 25, 2009 3:07 pm hi graeme & sarah - definitely have some overheads! my suggestion would be to have a long thin overhead along the whole bench (maybe with the lift up doors?) and have a bulkhead put in above this - then you could have a beautiful splassback (tiles, glass, even a chalkboard?) and really utitlise the space you have. i don't know if i missed it, according to your mates idea where would the fridge go in the kitchen? i would definitly have the pantry (with drawers at the bottom) where the fridge is now... maybe D & SG or smartpack will come along (both these guys are great at kitchen plans ) and whip up some ideas for you!!! p.s. welcome!!! 2014 - Prepping to build the Soho 4 with Plantation homes, industrial style 2009 - Built the Brampton with Coral Homes viewtopic.php?f=31&t=15399&start=280 Re: Hello all, what to do now..... 5May 25, 2009 10:07 pm Re: Hello all, what to do now..... 6May 25, 2009 10:10 pm yes! to that one - i've been scratchin my head all arvo about this thread - it is a REALLY strange shape, but i think bluesteels design definitely makes the best of it! 2014 - Prepping to build the Soho 4 with Plantation homes, industrial style 2009 - Built the Brampton with Coral Homes viewtopic.php?f=31&t=15399&start=280 Re: Hello all, what to do now..... 7May 25, 2009 10:28 pm bluesteel That is a hard shape Lots of drawers, pantry and overheads are all good ideas. Fridge near entrance of kitchen ie where oven is will close the area in. What about.. Re: Hello all, what to do now..... 10May 27, 2009 7:11 pm Difficult space to work with. On first look I like the design Bluesteel put up, but on closer inspection I realise that it wouldn't work as it's not to scale (ie the fridge in the drawing is only maybe 400mm deep). A shame, but at least it opens up some ideas about using the space differently. Re: Hello all, what to do now..... 11May 27, 2009 9:10 pm Hi again Everyone, Sorry for late reply, so busy at work and life etc. I like Bluesteel's idea, but as you stated esg, its a hard space to work with and i don't think the pantry would work, is it a walk-in that was suggested Blue? I only have a 840mm gap where fridge is at moment I do like the corner bench added to the existing bench on the right, and i definatley want over heads as well now. And would like to keep/ put new stove top where Blue suggested, with oven underneath. Can i throw in a curve ball for everyone though? What if...... the shower wasn't there? Does it make anything easier/ or more to work with? If i showed you the bathroom, you'd all say.... what were they thinking when that house was built....? I can go without that shower for now, but can't afford to replace it/ reno the bathroom at this stage. (i have an ensuite, so shower is not required for now) As you can see, this is a small kitchen and I'm tearing my hair out trying to work something out. I just can't get that corner near the shower sorted, and where to put microwave. I would like the pantry from floor to ceiling where fridge is at moment, i feel it fits best there. Thanks guys for all your interest and replies. Graeme Re: Hello all, what to do now..... 12May 27, 2009 10:56 pm It would be a much more workable space if you had extra room, however where there's a will there's a way - even with the hardest space I was having a play around with the design, using the Ikea kitchen design software... you'll need to use your imagination a little bit as I couldn't put all the walls in, but have based the main dimensions of the room on the sizes you have given. Basically, keep the sink where it is, move the oven under the bench below the cooktop. Add over head cupboards. Leave the fridge where it is. Add a 'breakfast bar' to the bench and add 2 full heigh cabinets where that small corner area is. We have arches in our home too and want to take them out like you have...it will look good. Just my thoughts on your kitchen...I like what Bluesteel has done too, but, as mentioned, the fridge space is the wrong size...what about if you left your fridge where it is and where the curved bench/cupboard is in the corner (where Bluesteel has shown the fridge), you put a pantry cupboard diagonally across that corner, maybe with 2 doors that open out. You can get them that would fit into that corner but they also jut out into the room a bit and may take too much space, but I'm thinking maybe it would still give you enough space in a pantry if you kind of went diagonally straight across that corner...just a thought Edit: actually, the same as Esg has done for you, only having the pantry diagonal across the corner ...would cut your pantry size down a bit, but will give a bit more floor space Re: Hello all, what to do now..... 16May 28, 2009 2:12 pm Rachelle lol missticky, you already thought of that idea, great minds! I think it works. lol..you have a nice drawing to go with yours...that's exactly what I meant Re: Hello all, what to do now..... 17May 28, 2009 7:30 pm Hey everyone, ESG, thanks for the IKEA design, i have been looking for a tool to use for ideas. What version is the one you use? I have just been playing with a 2005 version, enough to get an idea out. Thanks for the ideas Rachelle and Missticky, i've taken a piece from everyone's suggestions and added our own twist. What do you think? Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ This can be achieved with a little more work on our behalf by removing the linen and shower... not so bad, cause they have other places to go, eventually (kitchen is our priority). The pantry would have 2 drawers on the bottom and the 2 main pantry doors to the ceiling head board. The sink would remain where it is now, under the window. Are range hoods necessary? Our cabinet maker seems to say not really, a ceiling exhaust fan would be suffice (he prefers the ceiling fan), but can anything else be put above stove? The microwave needs a home. All the overheads, i would prefer to be shallow, so not to crowd the bench. (what's normal/ popular depth?) I'm getting a little more excited and over the "errrr.... what now?" stage. Thanks guys Graeme Re: Hello all, what to do now..... 18May 28, 2009 8:49 pm That is a good modern design - sometimes diagonals in small spaces look dated and wrong - put your microwave in a drop down overhead, underbench (not the greatest) or in the nice big pantry or sacrifice some of that pantry as a tower with a appliance tower - (put all you small appliances, microwave and drawers underneath) . Well done Re: Hello all, what to do now..... 19May 28, 2009 9:56 pm good job, graeme & sarah (which one are you, by the way? ) that works really well - realistically, yes, bathrooms are important, but we spend very little time in there as opposed to the amount of time we spend in our kitchens so i would definitely do as you have and allocate any extra space you can to the kitchen - the other option with the rangehood is to have a slideout with overheads, gives you a little more storage space there, pantry and fridge looks great (maybe a wine rack above the fridge you might need a drop or two after your monster reno effort) and the brekkie bar is good to - nice!!!! 2014 - Prepping to build the Soho 4 with Plantation homes, industrial style 2009 - Built the Brampton with Coral Homes viewtopic.php?f=31&t=15399&start=280 A question.
