Hi all
I'm trying to decide whether to use laminex of formica for my kitchen cupboard doors. My benchtops will be caesarstone, so wondering which one would look better with these and also which one is more durable?

Pick the colour you like the best. We have a Laminex for our base cupboards and Formica for our overheads in the kitchen because they were the best colours for us. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Re: Laminex or Formica? 4May 22, 2009 11:45 pm wilson art and nevamar also make some great colours. In terms of durability its much of a muchness. You shouldnt have to worry. A word of caution when putting laminate on doors, you have to make sure laminate is on the back also or the door will warp. This can be an expensive exercise hence why melamines or lamiwoods are used instead. The difference between a laminate and melamine is: laminate has about 7 layers of resin impregnated paper as opposed to melamines which have about 3. When you look at the colour swatches on a formica board you will see the label 'Also in panels'. This means melamines are available for the doors. Laminex do not do this as most colours are available in a melamine/lamiwood. Kitchens are like finger prints, no two are ever the same!! I would like to know if the gloss finish is more expensive than other finishes? We are building with a volume builder and try to get as much info about costs before going into the finishing appointment. It's remarkable how much the Silver Shadow differs in colour in the gloss and the velour finish. So if the gloss is more expensive we cannot just swap it for the other, we need to have a second choice ready. I also read something about a two-pack treatment for Laminate but can't find anything written about it on this Forum. Does anybody knows what this is? Thank you very much. A gloss laminate on doors would be more expensive. Most gloss finished laminates come as a laminate only and not pre-pressed onto board so the labour cost would be more expensive having to stick laminate on each individual door. If your looking for a gloss finish you'd be better off using a two pack polyurethane or vinyl gloss door. Re: Laminex or Formica? 11Jun 21, 2009 10:32 pm Hi guys I'm new to this and abit confused. Between Laminex & Formica, which one is the better product for bathroom & kitchen cabinets then? ie. water resistant & durable Could anyone please explain what's the pro's and con's of both laminates and melamine? Many thanks Re: Laminex or Formica? 13Jun 27, 2009 8:17 pm Monichi Between Laminex & Formica, which one is the better product for bathroom & kitchen cabinets then? ie. water resistant & durable I understand your concern. The bathroom cabinet in our first home started swelling and coming apart from the moisture. I think this has more to do with what's inside, moisture resistant mdf and fire retardant mdf, which you can tell by the speckled colour through it? Just going by memory here, hopefully someone can explain it better. Re: Laminex or Formica? 17Jun 04, 2015 11:16 am Pretty old topic but we're currently tossing up between Formica that have a nicer colour or Laminex that doesn't. However the texture of the Laminex panels is definitely smoother! Is that just the samples I'm looking at or does Formica in practice have exactly the same texture as on the sample? Re: Laminex or Formica? 18Jun 04, 2015 5:38 pm The sample is what you see and feel is what you get.
