Im a newbie to this forum and I thank you all for the wealth of info available. We're building 2 homes and we have our own plans but not sure how this works, we're still waiting for the building provisional building approval and we've been looking around at kitchen appliances and we've decided on the stove , dishwasher and rangehood (Smeg) so do we buy this ourselves and get the builder to install or can the builder source and install it.( we actually found a good price by sourcing it ourselves).Same with the floor tiles and basins and toilets.. Dan Re: Building a new House - Kitchen Question 2Apr 24, 2007 10:55 am Hi Dan
From talking to a few project building companies I've been told that if I want an oven which is the same brand that the building company uses then usually they can source it for you (with you paying the extra if it is a better model or more expensive than what they are going to put in) If you want something different (eg different brand/size) then they give you a discount on the item you are replacing (this is what we are going to do for the kitchen items especially as I'm very VERY specific about what brands I want in there) - however we were told that the discount would be quite less than the actual retail or wholesale price of the item as the company buys in bulk and therefore you have to work that into the equation. The one thing I've been told over and over again is that if we bring our own pieces into the building we have to be very very careful about sizes so that they can ensure that they fit ok - we were also told that the building company wouldn't install ovens that we bought in - they'll place it in the kitchen but we'd have to get someone in specifically to do the installation as an extra. I'm not sure about building with a regular builder though, hopefully someone else can answer that one My suggestion though is to ask the builder - he may have contacts or be able to source these things at a reduced cost - otherwise at least he knows you're going to do that side of the shopping Fiona You can really use anything you want the main consideration would be how it looks once painted/finished - or the look you want.
