Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 May 18, 2009 10:51 pm Well, if this one is anything like my ensuite reno thread, there will be LOADS of updates along the way with lots and lots of photos
We are not only renovating the kitchen, we're moving it entirely. EDITED - I have too many photos in this thread, so I'll just make the older ones links so it doesn't take ages to open Here's some before photos.... http://www.spencer-gardner.com/gallery_ ... C01400.JPG And today the deconstruction of the kitchen started (because we're moving the kitchen, I'll be able to keep my sink, pantry, stove & fridge until the new kitchen is up and running. http://www.spencer-gardner.com/gallery_ ... C01415.JPG Re: Kitchen renovation has officially begun! 2May 19, 2009 8:03 pm Well, another wall down!
SO exciting to see the space, it's great. Oh and I'm not sure I realised just how BIG my kitchen will be!!! :O :O (the space that I'm opening up isn't ALL kitchen. It will be kitchen & dining eventually, and the wall where the oven is at the moment still needs to come down, but I wont be doing that until my new kitchen is in). Kitchen will be about 3.6m x 4m http://www.spencer-gardner.com/gallery_ ... C01420.JPG http://www.spencer-gardner.com/gallery_ ... C01422.JPG This is where there used to be 2 doors. The kitchen will be up against this wall and we are putting in a hallway behind the wall (you can see the toilet wall has already been cut to size. Just to the right of the toilet will be the 'laundry in a cupboard'. The wall on the left of the toilet still needs to be cut to size (they couldn't do it today because I need to move some things from the other side of the wall). http://www.spencer-gardner.com/gallery_ ... C01423.JPG Re: Kitchen renovation has officially begun! 3May 20, 2009 11:12 am Good luck with the reno's! I'm still in that stage tho' it's almost over. Builders have left, just need sink and dishwasher plumbed in and the lighting done. Love the view from the toilet! ...If i leave my bathroom door open i can see right through kitchen and down to end of my path!! I will watch your reno with interest. I thought it was about time I updated this thread because things are about to start moving full steam ahead!! Kitchen gets delivered tomorrow and installed next week. All the wall work has been done and the new hallway behind the kitchen created (so the loo no longer has a view into the kitchen ) The slate work has all been patched up where it needed to be for the kitchen to go in. There's still more to do, but we'll do that once the kitchen is in when we're doing all the other left over bits from the old kitchen. Priority was to get all the patch up work done in the actual kitchen area. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Considering the slate was put down about 20 years ago, I'm very happy with the match in colour (will be better once it's all sealed). The guy at Stonecraft was very helpful and hand picked out every slate tile to match the samples of our existing slate we gave him. And because I'm so obsessed with view in this place, this is the view out kitchen window (well actually, I think it's the view through the glass door that leads into what will eventually be our outdoor kitchen... I was going to try and get power to my island bench by way of a custom built 'thing' above the island (essentially a piece of wood or similar housing downlights with a power point at either end)... Anyway, because we have decided to go with a smaller sink (1 & 1/4) with no draining board (has a removable draining board) AND the need to keep the kettle and toaster away from the over head cupboards, I'm thinking that we do NOT need power on the island. The pictures below are very rough (and there is no window above the sink), but I've messed around with them to show roughly where the sink will sit and the yellow squares are my power points. This means I'll have 4 double power points on the L part of the kitchen. Is this enough? Do I really need to also get power to the island bench? I'm guessing not... but would like some feedback. Kettle and toaster will permanently live to the left of the sink, so that will leave all other bench space (and 3 powerpoints) free for ad hoc use of other appliances. Your thoughts? Where do you think you will do most of the food prep work? Also do you use a food processor, or blender, or mixmaster etc? If you bake or are preparing something that needs power would you want to do it on the island? Re: Kitchen renovation has officially begun! **Powerpoints????? 7Jun 05, 2009 9:21 am Esg I am like BCMonty - do you bake a lot? Because if so I would want a power point on the island bench - I hated sitting my mixmaster underneath an overhead cupboard. Not sure why but I always feel claustrophobic. Plus I am of the opinion - how ever many PPs you are planning to install - add at least another 2. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Kitchen renovation has officially begun! **Powerpoints????? 8Jun 05, 2009 9:24 am Esg, we are not far from our own little kitchen reno so I will be interested to see how yours goes. I would definately, take some power over to your island bench. Even if you dont think you will use it do it anyway. I didn't in my last house and I regretted it. For the reason that it would be hard to do later do it now. Re: Kitchen renovation has officially begun! **Powerpoints????? 9Jun 05, 2009 11:14 am Thanks for the replies As for baking, not a lot at the moment but I have grand plans and a grand oven that I'll want to make the most of. I think I probably would regret not having power to the island... So by the sounds of it, power to the island should definitely be done... The next question is how? I have an idea for a custom rail of sorts but would be super keen to know if there's anything out there already (my searches have been fruitless). Basically, I can't get power through the floor so it has to come from overhead... Re: Kitchen renovation has officially begun! **Powerpoints????? 10Jun 05, 2009 11:25 am Are you absolutely sure you can't try and chase the power into your slab from somewhere. This really would be the best way to do it. Your other option would be to get a stainless pole probably around 15 cm diameter that would run from your ceiling down to your bench and then the cables can be run into a cupboard and out the side of your island for the actual point. Does this make sense? I have seen this done and it just becomes a feature of the area. Re: Kitchen renovation has officially begun! **Powerpoints????? 11Jun 05, 2009 11:38 am Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck! - Dalai Lama Re: Kitchen renovation has officially begun! **Powerpoints????? 12Jun 05, 2009 11:49 am Hmm, no I think it's too late to get power through the floor - I've just finished having all the slate patched up I'm not a fan of power points on the side of islands either (no kids yet, but will have in the future hopefully). I hadn't considered having a pole coming all the way down to the bench and then having the power points hidden in the bench somewhere. I'm still fairly keen for it to be overhead though... Maybe I'll just have to further develop the initial ideas thy I had. I think overhead power could be a very near solution if it's done right. Re: Kitchen renovation has officially begun! **Powerpoints????? 13Jun 06, 2009 9:43 am Yay! Our cabinets have been delivered.
And OH MY!! The island bench is MASSIVE!! Most definitely will want power to it!! (mind you, looking at the other benchspace we have available we really did need to have a nice big island) The edge of benchtop you can see spanning this whole photo - well, that's the island bench. http://www.spencer-gardner.com/gallery_ ... C01529.JPG Re: Kitchen renovation has officially begun! Cabinets arrived :) 14Jun 09, 2009 7:57 pm Well, the installation has begun!!
I wanted to give the floor a good clean before it was installed, and the resulting wet floor showed just how great it will look once it's been sealed again. You can hardly tell where all the patch up work was done!! http://www.spencer-gardner.com/gallery_ ... C01563.JPG Here's some photos from today... Oven will go in that big gap on the far wall, rangehood above it and a microwave cabinet on the wall to the right of the rangehood. Tall cupboard on the right is my appliance cupboard (storage for all those appliances like blender, toasty etc that accumulate over the years!). Island bench with 3 banks of draws. Pot draws either side of the oven. Tall cupboard on the left of the photo is our pull out pantry. Fridge space yet to be installed. http://www.spencer-gardner.com/gallery_ ... C01568.JPG Pull out Pantry (all the shelves aren't in yet obviously) http://www.spencer-gardner.com/gallery_ ... C01569.JPG Sink will be going above the 2 door cupboard, dishwasher (fully integrated) in the gap. Kettle and toaster will live in the corner on the left so there's no chance of damaging overhead cupboards with kettle steam. http://www.spencer-gardner.com/gallery_ ... C01571.JPG Re: Kitchen renovation has officially begun! Install Started :) 15Jun 09, 2009 9:12 pm Love the choice of shaker doors.......looking good.....and didn't the floor come up a treat. Can't wait to see the finished product. Re: Kitchen renovation has officially begun! Install Started :) 19Jun 14, 2009 7:33 pm (I've taken the IMG tags from photos in earlier posts - I think there were just too many pics in this thread). Anyway.... Progress has been a little slow this week... Some of the end panels are still not yet in, and the guy installing the kitchen is away all of this week. So no more work on the cabinets for a week or so. The dishwasher has been installed (though some crossed wires about the d/w meant that a panel was not originally ordered, but that'll hopefully be here ASAP and at no extra charge to me). It's a fully integrated d/w... so kinda really needs a panel Sink is installed and all connected up. The oven is nearly installed! There were too many tradies here on Friday, so the plumbers will hopefully be back tomorrow to sort out the gas lines. I think it gets certified later in the week. I've started filling up the draws on the island bench and moving stuff to the new pantry. Here's some photos.... Sink installed, this pic also shows where I've ended up having the kettle / toaster. Originally they were going to be in the corner on the right, but I was worried about steam damage to overhead cupboards, so thought the sink area layout to make room on the left. I'm really happy with how this area works Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Looking down towards the oven... can't wait til it gets installed!! And whilst it's certainly very sturdy and there will be no issue with holding the weight, I think I would have preferred individual pull out shelves. It's big enough and it "works", so I probably wont change it. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Kitchen renovation has officially begun!
