However, I would have the food preparation area facing the view and the cooktop on the opposite bench. Think about it. You spend more time preparing than at the cooktop and when you're at the cooktop it's probably better to focus on the task at hand. Also, it's nice to have the cooktop up against a wall so any splatter doesn't end up on your floor. So fridge, pantry and cooktop up against the bench with a wall being it and sink with plenty of space to each side (and dishwasher under) on the bench facing the view. That leaves the side opposite the external wall clear, so you can either put a wall there, leave it open or have a bench. Just me 2 cents worth. It’s more open and keeps you as a part of what ever activity is going on in each room. I would have a problem with the fridge door swinging either way, I see it as blocking walk ways. Just me. It seems you have only gained 2400mm by pushing out the study and I also assume that it now makes yours meals area 5400mm in total length? From your comments though it seems that this space is also intended to be used as a family room (where the kids will be playing), and if that is correct then I don't think the room would be big enough for sofas and a dining table. If it is only to be a meals area then the original plan still has the workspace in the kitchen looking over the current meals area. You also appear to have taken out some of the walls dividing off the bedrooms, bathroom, toilet and laundry. I wouldn't like the toilet etc. so open to where I would be sitting to eat etc. and don't think you are actually gaining any usable space so would prefer to see those walls back in place. If you do want a large meals/living area could you lose the study and incorporate that space as well? It appears that bedroom 4 isn't going to be used as a bedroom as it has no robe and perhaps could takeover the role of study? Just my thoughts so even if they don't suit they still might help you make some decisions. Good luck and let us know if you make any changes to the plan!! Re: Whats wrong with the kitchen layout i want? 7May 15, 2009 1:58 pm I voted for the second one. If the toilet is the issue, you can easily add a door at the linen cupboard area to shut that area. You can always request a glass window as your splash back. That way you can see the activities in the living area too. Or, join up both bench at the north end and put your cook top there, and have the whole bench next to the living room as a dry preparation area. The other side is the wet preparation area. That way, you can actually have a opening from your bench looking over into living area. and it can serve as a mini bar for the people from living room. Great for entertaining! Re: Whats wrong with the kitchen layout i want? 8May 15, 2009 3:23 pm I voted for the second kitchen. The first kitchen would be an absolute nightmare. In the first one, the kitchen is a traffic area, you have to go right through the middle of the kitchen to get from one room to another. Apart from anything it's dangerous. Imagine moving a saucepan from the stove to the sink just when someone moves from the dining to the living room. Looks like an accident waiting to happen to me. I'd avoid traffic through the kitchen at all costs. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. I considered hitting my kids over the head with saucepans, just to keep them OUT. Oh, and yes, safety issues. What do you mean? The first kitchen is a walk through. To get from the dining to the living is through the kitchen. What am I not seeing? I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Whats wrong with the kitchen layout i want? 12May 15, 2009 3:54 pm I should explain a bit better, both kitchens are walk thru, i thought the way i did it sort of stopped them from walking next to the main kitchen areas as they don't have to walk directly past a hot stove as in the first one, so could be walking past for eg. i am frying something there and won't have to move or be bumped while cooking. The study is my sewing area so won't be parting with that it has 2 windows to keep an eye on kiddies and need good light for doing that. The last end room, bed 4, will be dh's studio room. There will be a wall behind pantry, not sure how long it will be ? its just a draft, i saw this layout for the kitchen somewhere else and i really liked it and there would be a wall dividing living area. I think also we will extend back of house another .5m to make the end bed 4 a bit wider and my study too. Re: Whats wrong with the kitchen layout i want? 13May 15, 2009 3:55 pm Michelle - I too am not sure what you mean? My thoughts were that the original plan left the kitchen to exposed to the living areas and I think that it is better to have some privacy for the mess. Plus the study looks better in the second option. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Whats wrong with the kitchen layout i want? 14May 15, 2009 3:57 pm The second kitchen is only a walk past the pantry though.... more a walk-past kitchen than a walk-thru! I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Whats wrong with the kitchen layout i want? 15May 15, 2009 4:05 pm Focusing on the kitchen only, I think 2nd one is much better, mainly for the safety factors as others have already mentioned - yes, you are still walking thru 2nd kitchen but you are walking past the pantry, not thru the working area of stove and sink - obviously a hot saucepan of something is much more dangerous than a packet or tin from the pantry edit: in other words: exactly what Joles said Re: Whats wrong with the kitchen layout i want? 17May 15, 2009 4:19 pm homemaker Thanks thats how i have it, the fridge, cooktop, on one wall and the sink and d/washer on the other bench, the two little boxes is a double sink under the window. Good. I couldn't work out what the two little boxes were. How how is the pantry?
