Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 May 09, 2009 10:45 pm Our Island bench will be 2.1 metres long and 1.3 metres wide. Electrician was in the other day and he and builder said we only need 2 pendant lights over the bench. I go down to the light shop and the sales assistant tells me 90% of her customers would have 3 lights over this space. What do you think? I kind of thought 3 lights would look more balanced but i was guided by the electrican and builder who said it would look too busy if i had 3 lights over this space. Re: Lights over Island Bench 2May 10, 2009 12:09 am My peninsula bench is roughly same size...2.2m long X 900mm wide and I'm having 2 batten fix lights till I can find the pendants I like. My sparky tried to talk me out of them and to have downlights. I have my vision of what I want, so don't let anyone talk you out of it if that's what you want. You have to live with it, not him! My kitchen area is small and only 2.2m high, so 2 fine, but if you want 3, you go for it. Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck! - Dalai Lama Re: Lights over Island Bench 3May 10, 2009 9:59 am I would go for three lights. look at the display home pictures. If they have pendant lights, they'll have three lights pretty well all the time. Demolition August 2009, Construction Started September 2009, Completed December 2010 Re: Lights over Island Bench 4May 10, 2009 10:11 am I was having the exact same dilema... and have dubiusly settled on 2. my main reason was so that I would have a wider choice of pendents and could change them if i get bored of them. with 3 you will only fit a few types, longer slim types. most display homes do seem to have 3, but they are always these slim ones, and i can imagine a might like something a little bigger, or at least want the option to have something bigger. plus, the light store want to sell you things, so three things is better than 2 things as far as they're concerned! Re: Lights over Island Bench 6May 10, 2009 2:39 pm My bench is going to be 3.3 x 0.85 and I am going to have 3 lights put in spaced evenly for future pendants 'A bottle of wine contains more philosophy than all the books in the world.' I have 3 pendants and it looks fine. IMO anyway hahaha Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ "Your emotions are the slaves to your thoughts, and you are the slave to your emotions." — Elizabeth Gilbert Living in our new house. Slim ones might look silly if there's only two and wider ones too crowded if there's three... I have three (largish) slim pendants over my bench, which is about 3m long. I think. Re: Lights over Island Bench 10May 10, 2009 6:18 pm Always go for groups of 3.... It's the rule with interior design... Very rarely will you see just 2 plates, or just 2 chairs in a high end house... Electrical Engineer... Don't hold that against me... And keen owner builder... Mainly the building part!! Re: Lights over Island Bench 11May 10, 2009 7:21 pm I was about to say the same thing chuth77! It is one of the design 'rules' I have heard and somehow tends to be more balanced. In saying that though - we have a 1400mm wide x 2740mm, and all bench, no sink etc. Anyhow, I have decided to do a single central pendant. I have seen photos where this looks great with a wide bench. We actually bought the light the other day - at IKEA would you believe! Hopefully will suit. My Bro has an island about that size, & has 2 lights which are about 400mm across in diameter. No way could he do 3 with that style of light with out it looking too crowded or busy. So I would say if time permits, choose your fitting first, then decide whetehr 2 or 3 are right for the area. We are thinking of putting a spin on pendants in the bedroom and was wandering how painful it will to get installed after the house is complete, or is it better to specify now to the builder ???? * Are we there yet ? We ended up having 4 downlights over the bench (3m long bench). We just followed the display home. The bench will be our place that we do all the prep work so want to ensure it's bright enough. The remaining ktichen has 3 lights that are dimmable so if we want a "mood" light we can! The other reason we went for 4 is our benchtop is black so it's going to be quite dark. Just get battens installed where you want your pendants, then you can add the light fittings later. There are quite a few DIY pendants available now (check out Bunnings), but if you don't fancy any of those, you'll need an electrician to install them. It should be a cheap job, with the batten and switch already in place. We used a few DIY feature lights, and the rest we had an electrician friend come over and install. Re: Lights over Island Bench 16May 11, 2009 8:09 pm My bench is just over two metres and I have two. I don't know why I have two or even when I made the decision about it, but I have two. It looks fine to me, but then again I have too many other things to distract me about this build so haven't thought too much about the lights. For my kitchen though I think three might be too busy considering the bulkheads and the plaster void to the right. In saying that three would probably have worked, but I have two.
