Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 May 08, 2009 11:35 am Hi everyone, We are going to be installing our own flatpax kitchen and also going to redo the floors in the living area and kitchen to tiles. Currently we have old laminate or lino or something over particle board. My question is what should be installed first? I was thinking rip up the existing floor down to the particle board, install the kitchen and then tile around it. Can anyone suggest the best thing to do? Many thanks Jarrod Re: Tiles or Kitchen first? 3May 12, 2009 4:40 pm We're getting a new kitchen installed in about a month and were told by the site-measurer that if we're installing floor tiles, to make sure they're in before the kitchen installers come. One reason he said was because he knows of problems in the past where the dishwasher wasn't able to be installed or removed without having to remove the entire benchtop, as the tiles only went to just behind the kickboards, and the height of the tiles prevented the dishwasher from sliding in and out. I would've thought all the dishwashers had removable tops to accomodate for the height difference, but perhaps they don't? Our old one does, but I haven't pulled the new one out of it's box to see if it's got a removable top... Obviously it's not too much of an issue if you're only using thin flooring material like vinyl... Another tip: I've been told to make sure all the tiles are the same height (makes sense) but to keep costs down (total of approx 15sqm of floor area) I don't see it very cost-effective to have about 6sqm of tiles under cabinets you're never going to see, so it was suggested I use cheaper tiles of the same thickness to go under the cupboards... The existing kitchen just has sheets of cupboard material (laminated MDF) sitting on the floor to get the same height as the tiles which stop just inside the kickboards, but I have been told this is bad practice as if there is ever a water leak, they will absorb the water and expand, and likely crack splashbacks as the benchtop height rises... Re: Tiles or Kitchen first? 6May 12, 2009 5:20 pm Most people do kitchen first then tiles. BUT…..I have seen kitchen renovations where the old kitchen came out, and boo hooo , no matching tiles to fill in where needed. It’s a waste, but tile first, just in case. Re: Tiles or Kitchen first? 8May 12, 2009 10:11 pm We expect this kitchen to last us until we KDR in around 10-15 years, so a different layout isn't likely to be on the horizon any time soon But then if we decide to sell before we KDR, and the buyers decide they want a new kitchen layout, then it'll be their problem to solve, anyway Re: Tiles or Kitchen first? 9May 13, 2009 7:12 am that's not so much the issue. The concern is that there is increased risk of water seeping between the tiles & your kickboards. So most importantly, the kickboards need to made from a HMR (high moisture resistant) product. In addition, a very good application of a silicone based sealer between the tiles & k/boards & also avoid any major spills/water leaks.
