Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 May 04, 2009 5:46 pm Hi, We are having a 2m by 2.2m walk in pantry but I am at a loss as to how to set it up, as in do I have a bench, do I have cupboards, shelving?? I want to be able to have the toaster and microwave in there, but I won't be doing other prep stuff. I alo want to be able to find things easily. The builder has drawn it up so it will have a bench, underneath cupboards and cupboards above - all with no doors, but I'm not sure of the practicality of this. Does anyone have any ideas? Also, our builder quoted us over $2000 to do as he suggested, does this sound reasonable or would we be better off to have it done after handover? We think we will have our WIR and study done after handover. Any advice people can offer would be very helpful! Re: Help me configure my pantry... 2May 04, 2009 6:02 pm You could probably get it done cheaper over handover but it may also be a big PITA. I've turned a study nook into a walk in pantry in our design. Ours is approx 2.4m x 2m with a 600mm bench, one open shelf underneath and two open shelves above, a round sink with mixer tap with a cupboard underneath the sink only..... cost $1,475 through the builder. ( another $800 or so for QQ to the bench). But just note that this is in lieu of a normal cupboard pantry so that cost would have been deducted if that makes sense. I like the idea of the shelving being open so I can find and see everything easily. Just one hint, if you are going to have any appliances in there, add an exhaust fan.... someone will burn toast! I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. You might want some task lighting above the area where your toaster and/or microwave are. Nothing worse than trying to do things with your own shadow across the work area. Re: Help me configure my pantry... 4May 04, 2009 10:01 pm I'm having a 1.85 x 2.35 walk in pantry. My main sink and dishwasher is in the pantry so my island bench will never have dishes on it. I'm having the 2.3 wall completely decked out in shallow shelves so nothing has to be stacked in front of anything else. I'll also have my 2nd freezer in there. There is a door which leads straight outside to where our bins are kept. I'm doing the bench during the build and leaving everything else until after handover. Adding the 2nd sink, plumbing and cupboard was an additional $1500. Originally they allowed $1200 for shelving but it wouldn't have been enough. Bunnings has shelving in nice colours other than white for really reasonable prices (2.4m for around $20-$25). I'm going to go with adjustable shelving too, I keep most items in decko containers but they all differ in height so will want my shelving to be flexible too. 2011 Home Sweet Home Handover 03 September 2010 PCI 27August 2010 Plumber 20August 2010 Electrician 19August 2010 Painting 04 August 2010 Cabinets 13Jul2010 Lockup 23June Frame 20April slab 1Mar10 Re: Help me configure my pantry... 5May 05, 2009 12:29 pm I have a couple of photos that I found online that I have kept for inspiration for us for when we come to do our pantry. I will post them as they may help you too. We have a double power point in our pantry too, as I wanted to keep one shelf for chargers, ie mobile phones, torches etc. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Help me configure my pantry... 6May 05, 2009 1:22 pm I'm having benches on two sides of standard depth with cupboards underneath (applainces, large item storage etc) and then bench to ceiling shelves the depth of the big tupperware containers + 20mm. As part of the cupboard / benches there are 2 standard sets of drawers (eg. cutlery size ones) The other long wall may have floor to ceiling shelves - I haven;t decided and the other wall (shorter one - with the door opening onto it) will be left blank. The long bench has the sink and drainer in the middle. I chose not to have to have pots and pan drawers in the pantry as I figure the cupboards are going to be storing things like the bread maker and massive bags of dog food or 24 packs of soft drinks so it doesn't make life easier to have the drawers. Re: Help me configure my pantry... 10May 06, 2009 2:05 pm Thanks everyone for your replies, they have been really helpful. Joles - I hadn't even thought of having an exhaust fan in there - I have added that. Kek - Thanks to your post I have added an extra light - I don't want shadows! Anna1 - Adjustable shelving is a good idea. I have asked for the builder to put a bench and shelving in on one side of the pantry and we will deck out the rest. We too will have a freezer in the pantry. ozkarnak - I hadn't even thought of putting drawers in the pantry, great idea! It will be somewhere to keep ribbon, sticky tape etc. davden - Thanks for the photo's. I would love for my pantry to look like those, esp the first one - well thought out. to-do-list - you have brought me back to reality. I wish I could have the perfectly organised pantry that looks great to guests but after reading your list, I realised it was just a dream The builder suggested we put our phone in the pantry, I think the study would be better suited though - what do people think? Re: Help me configure my pantry... 11May 06, 2009 2:11 pm Amity - we will be having a phone in the pantry, another in the study, another in the garage and another in the main bedroom. The main handset in the study will be the one plugged into the telstra outlet whilst the other handsets all just operate from a power point. Some things are worth waiting for.
