Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Apr 27, 2009 4:17 pm I'm just about to sign on the dotted line for my kitchen and keep having all these last minute thoughts. The latest one is in regards to the distance between my oven & the island bench. I had originally planned for the distance to be 1200. Now due to the kitchen being slightly longer than originally planned, that distance is just over 1300. Not a huge difference, but it has me thinking... Would I be better off keeping it as is (just over 1300mm) or bringing it in a little by making my draws a bit wider on the island. Currently I have 3 banks of draws on the island bench (outside ones with 3 draws each and the middle one with 4 draws), each 700mm wide. If I were to make the outside ones 800mm wide it would give me a touch more storage and bring the distance between the oven & island down to around 1100mm. Oh - and I'm talking distance to the 'end' of the island, not the front where the draws are. Kitchen is an L shape with an island bench running parallel to the fridge/sink side. From what I've read, 1200 is the optimal distance - but am I better off having it a little more OR a little less and getting a bit more storage? Re: Distance between oven & island... help 2Apr 27, 2009 8:28 pm The whole point of the space is to make sure two people can get passed each other comfortably, with the oven door closed. Two people should not be able to pass each other if the oven door is open as its a safety issue, and would be a waste if you dropped the roast turkey due to an unseen nosey family member! I would gain the extra storage and make the gap slightly narrower. 1100 is ample space to navigate in and around your oven. Kitchens are like finger prints, no two are ever the same!!
