Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Apr 21, 2009 12:48 am Ok this might be a stupid question. But, what is the standard height for a power point in a kitchen? Our benchtop is at 900mm, our overhead cupboards will 600mm above that. The electrician has placed them at approx 1100mm high The red crosses marks where he placed them, I am thinking this is too close to the oven, I would have preferred them to more in the corners. Would you agree??? Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Power points in the kitchen 3Apr 21, 2009 7:03 am Yes I reckon they are to close and too high. I would have thought about the hight of a toaster would be better. I would have had them more in the corners as when you plug your kettle in etc the cord can then go towards the corner and you kettle out from the wall to where the benchtops meet maybe. That would be more user friendly. It shouldnt be to hard to move them. Here is were mine are. The ones on the left were to close to the wall oven after that was installed so the tiler moved them over the same as the ones on the right before he tiled, after talking to the electrician, so they look good now. I think the top one is for the oven. I am going to ask if I can get these 3 in the stainless steel look finish to match the kitchen stuff also. By taff Know where your going in life............... you may already be there Re: Power points in the kitchen 5Apr 21, 2009 9:46 am Thanks Taffy, from what little I can see your kitchen looks quite stylish - congratulations. I agree with you 100% thats exactly what I wanted because I usually have my kitchen aid in the left hand corner and the kettle in the right, so it made more sense to me to have the power points closer to the corners. Chuth - I never saw an electrical plan as such. All I saw was where they were placing the down lights under the cabinets. I guess whats also annoying me is the fact that I am going to have to pay somebody to come up and patch up all the holes before the bench top goes in and my splash back. I just dont think I will be able to get somebody to come out before thursday which is when the cabinets go in. Re: Power points in the kitchen 6Apr 21, 2009 12:33 pm What sort of spalshback are you getting? Glass, tiles etc The holes don't need to be patched as your splashback will span over them. Have you thought about getting slim line powerpoints put into the base of the overhead cupboards thus not taking away from the beauty of the kitchen or the splashback. Its just my opinion but power points (gpo's) are ugly, they have there place and there function but why not make them work for you rather than them cluttering the place up. Ben LEADING THE WAY IN BUILDING AND CONSTRUCTION BUILDERSEDGE PTY LTD Re: Power points in the kitchen 7Apr 21, 2009 2:17 pm I would be leaving one in the original place - reason why. When I cook in our electric frypan / wok I like to do so under the rangehood on the cooktop. Our power points are in the corners and the power cords don't stretch that far. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Power points in the kitchen 8Apr 22, 2009 12:42 am Buildersedge - we are having glass. Which was one of the reason why I wanted them low (but not too low of course) and off set to the corners so as they wouldn't detract from the splashback. My concern with not filling them is that, depending on the colour of the splash back the holes maybe visible through the glass. Dont want that!!! Re: Power points in the kitchen 9Apr 22, 2009 12:01 pm We have installed many splashback where there has been exsisting holes from gpo's etc, don't be worried you will never see them, a couple of tips with glass splashbacks though: (1) Make sure installer only uses neutral cure silicon otherwise it will show through (2)Make sure the silicon that is used to seal form the benchtop to the splashback is kitchen/bathroom grade (smells like vinegar until dry) as it won't go mouldy or change its coulour over time. Have you seen clipsal's new range of SATURN gpo's/switches etc, they have a glass face on them and there may be something in there range that would marry in nicely with your colour scheme's http://www.clipsal.com.au/homeowner/pro ... turn_range Ben LEADING THE WAY IN BUILDING AND CONSTRUCTION BUILDERSEDGE PTY LTD Re: Power points in the kitchen 10Apr 22, 2009 3:17 pm if your bench hight is 900mm and the GPO's are at 1100mm then its only 200mm higher then the bench, which is about normal. I personally would have lowered all of my PGOs so that they are only going to have about a 10mm gap between the base of the GPO and the top of my bench. I agree with cyclone about having your kitchen on its own electrical circuit, it will stop your power going out if your trying to cook, have the dishwasher going and trying to do the laundry all at once! Also I would have as many GPO's has I could get to go in the kitchen I hate having to unplug one of the appliances that stays out to plug in something else so I can cook. My Owner still Building thread viewtopic.php?t=9026 Re: Power points in the kitchen 11Apr 22, 2009 7:00 pm I think 10 mm is a bit tight if you want to plug in a double adaprter or use it to plug in a phone recharger etc. it makes it a bit tight because they have that longer plug. Re: Power points in the kitchen 12Apr 23, 2009 8:17 am I'd recommend going some Clipsal saturns also. We are using them on the glass splashback. Whilst they are a little more exy, the modern looks helps present the powerpoint a little better rather than a default white etc. costing approx $66 per double GPO to upgrade. In my kitchen I put my power points on the walls at each end so I didn't have to put them on my glass, but kyton's point was a good one, but I have windows at each end anyway for the frypan smells to escape Re: Power points in the kitchen 14Apr 23, 2009 3:06 pm we will probably go the Pure White although those above are meant to be the Ocean Mist although they do look fairly white. most ppl swap the stove switch over also if they are doing the GPO's. We don't have the pure white in NSW ozzroo, I have been searching, but my sparky said the front just clips on so if white become available here I can change if I like. Re: Power points in the kitchen 16May 04, 2009 10:24 pm We are also considering either the Saturn OR Slimline our builder would only include the standard I think it's series 2000, we have to speak to the Electrician about the cost of the upgrade, has anyone here changed from "standard" to "slimline" and knows what extra it cost? http://www.clipsal.com/homeowner/produc ... 000_series Re: Power points in the kitchen 18May 08, 2009 9:02 pm and they charge $66 to upgrade to the Saturn's but they look cool... so why not. We ended up going Ocean Mist. We ended up going Ocean Mist. Just need to wait now I think that from memory that is more then the actual switches cost isn't it? I have a list somewhere of the wholesale prices from my friend. We will be using them strategically around the home - not in every room just where they will be a little more exposed. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Power points in the kitchen 20May 08, 2009 10:55 pm I would have the power points 100 mm (to centre of GPO) above the bench and close to the two ends (say ~100 to 200 mm from the end).
