Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Apr 16, 2009 11:40 am Hi, my builder has offered us a Westinghouse Freestanding oven & Rangehood to replace our Kleenmaid products that we were originally getting. I am to research this a bit further, but my first impression is that Westinghouse is not in the same calibre as Kleenmaid. Does anyone have any thoughts on this, or any suggestions that would be a good equivalent? Thank you. Original oven was the Kleenmaid FEG905x (900mm freestanding) Alternative offerered is the Westinghouse DSK963S Re: Builder has offered Westinghouse to replace Kleenmaid 2Apr 16, 2009 12:01 pm Hmm, initial thought is that the two products wouldn't compare, well, especially with price... our builder offerred Technika to replace Kleenmaid, or a credit. Needless to say we are taking the credit even though I'm positive its nowhere near replacement cost. When you look at the prices of Kleenmaid products, I would have thought something high end would be a fair comparison - one of the reasons why we chose our builder was the quality appliances - but then again, when has building a house ever been fair to the consumer... ICK So glad the building is over, never again. Loooove our house, but still not quite sure it was worth all of the stress they put us through! Re: Builder has offered Westinghouse to replace Kleenmaid 3Apr 16, 2009 12:18 pm Thanks ICK, I am trying to get prices now on ovens. Do you by any chance have any idea what the Kleenmaid FEG 905X 900cm freestanding oven is worth? Unfortunately we never researched the costs as it was included in the house price. We were just pleased to have a Kleenmaid appliance Cheers Re: Builder has offered Westinghouse to replace Kleenmaid 4Apr 16, 2009 2:40 pm Hi Davden, Just a thought but maybe you could ask them to replace with AEG or Electrolux as these are both from the same manufacturer. Westinghouse is under the same banner. I beleive they just use different parts or are targeted at different countries markets..... So Westinghouse is part of AEG, Electrolux,Kelvinator, simpson and a few others..... If they can get Westinghouse they should be able to get these other brands if they sound like a better option........ Re: Builder has offered Westinghouse to replace Kleenmaid 5Apr 16, 2009 4:42 pm My own personal experience with Westinghouse appliances has not been good and I will not be using them again, nor do I recommend them to others. Steer clear if you can... Re: Builder has offered Westinghouse to replace Kleenmaid 6Apr 16, 2009 6:36 pm Thats no good Kelly,......we have had only Westinghouse in our last 3 homes and no problems whatsoever......in saying that we have only been in each house for no more than 18months so maybe we never had time to have them mess up on us. Re: Builder has offered Westinghouse to replace Kleenmaid 7Apr 16, 2009 7:08 pm davden Thanks ICK, I am trying to get prices now on ovens. Do you by any chance have any idea what the Kleenmaid FEG 905X 900cm freestanding oven is worth? Unfortunately we never researched the costs as it was included in the house price. We were just pleased to have a Kleenmaid appliance Cheers Hi Davden, I went to a shop just before xmas just out of interest and they were offering me 20% off from memory if I bought and only signed up for a 5 year warranty (instead of their normal 10 year). He wrote the price in the catalogue but I can't find it at the moment - all the house stuff is a major mess! I think there was a choice of two and the cheaper of the two was mid to high $4's - but please don't quote me - I'll look again tomorrow when I have a tidy up. ICK So glad the building is over, never again. Loooove our house, but still not quite sure it was worth all of the stress they put us through! Re: Builder has offered Westinghouse to replace Kleenmaid 8Apr 16, 2009 8:40 pm gweluphome we have had only Westinghouse in our last 3 homes Three houses gweluphome Thats no good Kelly,......we have had only Westinghouse in our last 3 homes and no problems whatsoever......in saying that we have only been in each house for no more than 18months so maybe we never had time to have them mess up on us. That's the magic number right there My cooktop - well, 2 of the burners - died after 24 months, while the other 2 work intermittently...my rangehood died after 6 years (i guess not so bad) while my oven has never really done a great job of cooking anything I also had a Westinghouse fridge that lasted a grand total of 4 years before it carked it My next appliances will be Bosch and Blanco...hoping for a better result Re: Builder has offered Westinghouse to replace Kleenmaid 9Apr 16, 2009 8:53 pm Thanks for that ICK. I would have thought they would have been around $4-5K too. I have just come back from the shops looking at the appliances. The Westinghouse they have offered is one of the cheaper 900mm ovens available.

Aren't (or should I say weren't!!) Kleenmaid just re-badged from other brands? Can you just say to the builder, I'll have the (original) brand whatever it was?? Re: Builder has offered Westinghouse to replace Kleenmaid 12Apr 16, 2009 9:29 pm I just found the catalogue I was talking about earlier, RRP before xmas for their two Freestanding Ovens was $5,299 & $4,049. Obviously builders would have been given a major discount but there does seem to be a big gap between the two. JohnandTarin, I don't like where you are going with your comment. We are simply discussing our situation, I have sympathies with others and the whole situation downright sucks for everyone who is involved with anything to do with this company. There are a lot of people who comment on things to do with their build that may seem trivial to some where others have it much worse, but how often has it been said, well, others are in a worse situation (may not have used these words but it certainly came across like this)... well its not said often, which is why this forum is so fantastic. Simple fact is, we sign contracts for something of a certain quality we expect - when we cannot get it, one would think if the builder has not lost any money, the replacement should be of a similar value. In future, just consider what you say and if its not helpful, why bother saying it at all? edit: The FEG905X model was the one that was $5299 RRP. ICK So glad the building is over, never again. Re: Builder has offered Westinghouse to replace Kleenmaid 13Apr 16, 2009 9:34 pm "Least you guys are getting something rather than nothing." "John and Tarin" I am most sympathetic for those people who outlaid their own cash and have been caught up in the Kleenmaid situation, and I hope something works out for them. All I am asking is that our builder seems to have offered a far cheaper oven as an alternative and I am doing my research to make sure that for us, we don't get an inferior replacement. Re: Builder has offered Westinghouse to replace Kleenmaid 15Apr 16, 2009 10:40 pm I'd be a little disappointed if I was offered Westinghouse in place of the Kleenmaid. The builder will have lost money because they would have bulk ordered and paid something..... BUT, that is not your problem. It is in effect a supply problem, not the customer's issue. There should be some fine print in your contract..... "from time to time items may not be available and a substitute will be offered" yadda, yadda.... but it usually says something to the effect that the substitute will be of "similar quality". PUSH this. Really play the "One of the reasons I signed up was because of quality appliances" card. This is their first offer..... make your counter offer. Good luck guys, let us know how you go! I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself.
