Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Apr 15, 2009 5:27 pm Thinking about not having handles on my overheads in my new kitchen to create a streamlined look. In all likelyhood I also do not intend for these cupboards to be high use either so handles seem unnecessary to that end. i do not have any overhead cupboards at all ATM so i am quite unsure about whether to go with handles or without... what's everyones view on this kind of look? and anyone here have it? do you think it could date? look odd? unfinished? Re: Your thoughts on handleLESS kitchen cupboards 2Apr 15, 2009 5:30 pm I think it would look great! Obviously keeping the handles on the cabinets under the benchtop could come in handy when hanging things such as tea towels, plastic bags.. ect. But having the overhead cupboards handle free i think would look great. When i was choosing things, i never worried about the whole 'dated' thing.. as no matter what you choose, in ten years time you'll be able to tell it's ten years old. Re: Your thoughts on handleLESS kitchen cupboards 3Apr 15, 2009 5:32 pm Unless I see something sensational when I am finally ordering the kitchen, I will go handle-less also. Like you, I will not be having any overhead cupboards either. I very much like the streamlined look. As far as dating goes, hard to say. In our current kitchen my OH changed our handles to give an updated look, which worked well. Life's too short too drink bad wine Re: Your thoughts on handleLESS kitchen cupboards 4Apr 15, 2009 5:36 pm We are not having any overhead cupboards at all. If we go with two pack for the kitchen then we are having recessed handles on the drawers whilst the cupboard doors across the front of the island will all be push latches. If we go createc doors then we are having extremely thin (knife edge thin) handles so they become unobtrusive. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Your thoughts on handleLESS kitchen cupboards 5Apr 15, 2009 5:54 pm We are having overheads but there will be no handles and I was hoping to have the shadowline handles for the bottom aswell....the one where the very long handle forms the top of the cupboard so you just slip your fingers under and pull. I love the fact that the little guy(not DH) can not swing of the handle or use them as ladder steps on pot drawers. As my nephew used to. Love it go for it..... The good thing about going handleLESS is that in 10 years time you can just ADD some , at the time IN handles Re: Your thoughts on handleLESS kitchen cupboards 7Apr 15, 2009 10:16 pm I'd love to see some photos of handleLESS kitchen draws and cupboards Are they user-friendly? Are they ok for long nails (not too long:P) Re: Your thoughts on handleLESS kitchen cupboards 8Apr 15, 2009 10:17 pm I;ve seen them, verrrry nice! very sleek post some pics! Are they ok for long nails (not too long:P) I always manage to break nails on handleless cupboards or recessed handle cupboards. For that reason I'm using ordinary handles. WE had rhese kind of handles in our last house. I loved them and consired originally having the same again. Ours were made as a jarrah wood trim though. Visitors children would take ages to figure out how to open the cupboards which was always amusing. Re: Your thoughts on handleLESS kitchen cupboards 11Apr 16, 2009 7:27 am Thanks for your feedback everybody. I believe i may go without handles on the overheads. My cabinets will be almost the same colour as my walls so I hope that by not having handles it should make them 'disappear' , creating a streamlined look Re: Your thoughts on handleLESS kitchen cupboards 12Apr 16, 2009 9:26 am _kelly_ Thanks for your feedback everybody. I think matching the OH to the paint and no handles should look very streamlined and disappear into the walls. I would love to see pictures of anyone who has achieved this look... Re: Your thoughts on handleLESS kitchen cupboards 13Apr 16, 2009 9:28 am fitnhealthy, if you want overheads in your kitchen,, would you not be better off organising to have them installed with rest of kitchen rather than after handover?? Re: Your thoughts on handleLESS kitchen cupboards 14Apr 16, 2009 9:55 am My folks build over 30 years ago and didn't have handles... never thought they'd be the type to be ahead of their time I like the look of it, I just don't like finger prints (or dirty baking fingers) which is the only thing that would deter me if I wanted the look. ICK So glad the building is over, never again. Loooove our house, but still not quite sure it was worth all of the stress they put us through! Re: Your thoughts on handleLESS kitchen cupboards 15Apr 16, 2009 9:56 am You would think so Helyn, but I am unable to make ANY changes at all to anything now. They are being very inflexible. I was thinking about it at the time of the selection process, but I really didn't have much time to think about it then, but since having a think about it I contacted the builder, but they won't allow me to make any changes. I was almost going to contact the joinery place and see if they could do it for me and I pay them direct, but they probably wouldn't do that. What do you think? Re: Your thoughts on handleLESS kitchen cupboards 16Apr 16, 2009 10:01 am I'd contact them direct. You've got nothing to lose. The other thing is, if you want a bulkhead over the overheads, it can get messy over handover. The chippies will probably do the bulkhead for you for a cashy. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Your thoughts on handleLESS kitchen cupboards 17Apr 16, 2009 10:05 am that's unfortunate fitnhealthy, especially as your house is only at frame stage, hard to see why you cant make a variation on your kitchen cabinetry at this early stage, I understand you cant make any structural changes now but would of thought a kitchen cabinetry change would be OK Re: Your thoughts on handleLESS kitchen cupboards 18Apr 16, 2009 10:44 am I've just called the joinery place, but the person I spoke to wasn't completely sure, but she seems to think I need to go through the builder. Someone will hopefully give me a call and confirm. I never knew how difficult it would be. My frame hasn't even been started yet, it is still a slab... Re: Your thoughts on handleLESS kitchen cupboards 19Apr 16, 2009 12:02 pm I was thinking they would be annoying, and that I would shut my fingers in them, but I have come around. Because they are overhead, you will open the door from the bottom with you thumb, and it will be easy to get a hold and easy to close. Sounds good.
