Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Apr 10, 2009 6:50 am How wide is normal for an island bench, taking into account it will have the cooktop in it, be 4mtrs long and also serve as a breakfast bar area at one end, with a small bookcase and bar fridge built into the other end on the outside of it. I allowed for 1200mm on my plans, but could that be overkill? Possumchops Now the proud owner of 3.7acres of Serenity. Colour selection completed! Soon to go to council. Re: Island bench - how wide? 2Apr 10, 2009 8:47 am It really dpends on how much space you have. I've seen some really wide island benches, which I think are great if you can fit them in. Ours isn't an island, but our breakfast bar is 850mm wide. It's certianly adequate, but more would be good.... Re: Island bench - how wide? 3Apr 10, 2009 8:57 am Our Coral floorplan shows a standard Bench of 600mm wide with the Cooktop in it and then a 90 degree corner to a Breakfast Bar of 900mm with the sink in it. This is a standard size, I think. Your 1200mm sounds lovely and spacious, Possumchops. Re: Island bench - how wide? 4Apr 10, 2009 9:44 am ours is 850mm like kek's. Go wider if you can! My mum has 950mm and it feels soo much more spacious than mine. 1200 would be great "Your emotions are the slaves to your thoughts, and you are the slave to your emotions." — Elizabeth Gilbert Living in our new house. I really want to have a safe distance at the back of the cooktop too, that was one reason to go so wide. Possumchops Now the proud owner of 3.7acres of Serenity. Colour selection completed! I don't think it's overkill if ou have the room, which we both seem to have! Building Thread viewtopic.php?f=31&t=13002 Site start: 8th July 2009 Handover: 11/12/2009! 5 months total build time. 40 sqs of luxuary...Bliss! Re: Island bench - how wide? 7Apr 10, 2009 4:07 pm 4m x 1200mm??? I wish..... Go for it! You can prepare food on one side, the kids can do homework on the other (or guests can sit and have a drink and some nibbles), and everybody gets plenty of room. Re: Island bench - how wide? 9Apr 10, 2009 4:57 pm Ours will be 2740 x 1400mm. It will be clear - no sink, cooktop etc. It will have a room for seating on one of the long sides and drawers or shelves on the other sides. Shall be lovely! This was standard in our house. If you have the room to go big without impacting negatively on other spaces - then why not? Wider will give more flexibility and space for seating, especially if you have a sink on the bench. This gives you 600 mm for any appliances such a dishwashers and 300 mm which is perfect for a breakfast bar with legs not bumping into things. I've got 1200 mm for my island. Demolition August 2009, Construction Started September 2009, Completed December 2010 Re: Island bench - how wide? 11Apr 11, 2009 12:48 am We are probably going to go 1200mm wide with a sink and dishwasher being located in the island. It's a galley kitchen and I want to have a wall oven so it's more due to lack of bench space against the wall. But even so am really looking forward to having all that room After 2 false starts, a year living overseas, two more world trips and 3 years of uncertainty we are now starting the build process again - hopefully for real this time! Re: Island bench - how wide? 12Apr 11, 2009 1:34 pm go for 1400mm width will be lovely as mine, butfor the length I guess max. will be 2900mm,otherwise you will have joint which is not good. Re: Island bench - how wide? 13Apr 13, 2009 9:20 pm Possumchops we are having the same layout in our kitchen, our cooktop is also on the breakfast bench and our kitchen designer suggested a 1200 wide bench. Out of interest, are you having induction or gas cooktop? As we have a young child we've picked induction and will possibly go for a downdraft exhaust fan which will form a pop up wall up against the back of the cooktop (I'm hoping this will catch some of the splatter). Re: Island bench - how wide? 15Apr 14, 2009 6:43 am Most likely gas at this stage. I'm hoping I can stretch the budget to the e:line version from electrolux, 900mm wide. I don't want a wall behind it, but am tossing the idea of a mini glass splash back behind it as well. Possumchops Now the proud owner of 3.7acres of Serenity. Colour selection completed! Soon to go to council. Re: Island bench - how wide? 16Apr 18, 2009 10:41 pm I wanted my island bench to be a focal part of the kitchen so I had it made quite large, it is 3000mm x 1500mm. I had the option of putting the cooktop in the island but I prefer to not do that, I prefer the cooktop to have the wall and splashback behind it. So mine just has the sink built into it, but there are drawers, cupboards and shelving on both sides. There is a partition in the middle, so you can't reach right through from one end to the other. It also has the overhang on one side so that it is still possible to sit at the bench and sit comfortably without knocking your knees against it. I was slightly worried at first because it is Laminex because I was told by the builders there was a possibility that it would not be seamless due to the size, but it all worked out and there is no dividing seam in it at all. Sooty's House - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=19462 Re: Island bench - how wide? 17Apr 18, 2009 10:49 pm Hiya, We plan on installing an island bench in our kitchen 2500mm long x 1400mm wide. If you use a manufactured stone, such as the one we are considering, the max. slab width of this particular brand is 1410mm, so anything over than would require a join. We were originally going for 1500mm wide but reduced it 10mm for this very reason. Natural stone such as granite, marble, limestone etc may not necessarily be as restrictive. I say as long as the bench is in proportion with the rest of the space then bigger is better Pix Built a (highly) modified Allcastle Maxworth 38.7 in Sydney. Re: Island bench - how wide? 18Apr 24, 2009 12:31 pm Sooty - this is what I was trying to do for my bench but was told I would have to have seams which I didn't want !!!. Can you tell me what brand of laminex it was ?? and do you have any pictures ??? Thanks Re: Island bench - how wide? 19Apr 24, 2009 2:53 pm Sorry, I have Formica not Laminex. I got it wrong, but either way it's basically the same product and what I was told was that I'd probably have a seam with it, but I do not. When I did pre-start, the consultant went to ask someone else about the seam because we said if we had to have a seam we would have to choose another material rather than have the seam. So she went off and asked someone else about the size of the boards (or something like that) that the Formica comes in and came back to tell us we could probably get away with no seam, but it could be possible. After it was installed I had a look and was really happy with the end result because there was no seam at any point in the bench. I don't have any completed photos of the bench on me, but these are photos of it during construction.
