Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Apr 04, 2009 4:17 pm Hi. I am putting together some drawings for my kitchen so I can e-mail them out for rough quotes. ATM I have a U-shaped kitchen. My preference is for an island and straight work station against the wall. I think I have sufficient space - 3m x 3m approx. In my design I have about 1.3m between the island and opposing bench (that contains the cooktop and rangehood...the oven is wall mounted so no worries). My question: what's the minimum and/or recommended distance between the island and the opposite work top? I have it in my mind that it's something like 1.2 metres but can't remember. I checked out a few display homes today but they're all on a much grander scale than my little homestead so no help. Is my 1.3m enough? Help Re: DYI kitchen design: ? min distance between island & other 2Apr 04, 2009 4:24 pm Not sure what is standard, but if it helps, mine is 1090mm between the island and the other bench 'A bottle of wine contains more philosophy than all the books in the world.' Thanks guys/gals I wonder if I can stretch to 1500mm or thereabouts by making the seating area at the island smaller...? I've allowed an 'overhang' (excuse my lack of knowledge about the terminology) of 400mm for seating. Wondering whether this this too generous now. Maybe I will compromise and take 100mm off there and whack it on the other; that'll give me 1400mm of space and then I'll be in-between "minimum" and "perfect" ETA: I did a search and found the other thread referred to. Thanks so much! viewtopic.php?f=16&t=2183&start=0&hilit=1200mm Re: DYI kitchen design: ? min distance between island & other 6Apr 04, 2009 7:31 pm _kelly_ Awesome! Thanks so much! viewtopic.php?f=16&t=2183&start=0&hilit=1200mm I'm probably not going to help much, but my peninsula was straight edged on the end. I picked that up after I had done the draft plan with the designer, she suggested 200mm is sufficient for seating on an end. I wanted to sit there and look out my french doors! The other side is 900mm wide. Normal bench width is 560mm or thereabouts. I hope that makes sense!
