Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Mar 28, 2009 1:56 pm Just wondering what everyone's opinion on this is? Would you have the sink in the island bench or against the wall? We don't have a window agains the wall and we have a big open area. I am unsure if it would be nicer to be able to face the guests while washing the dishes or have the island bench nice and tidy to look at at all times. Decisions decisions Re: Kitchen sink - on the island or not? 3Mar 28, 2009 2:12 pm Depends what else you have against the wall, and how much room you've got, I guess. I have 2 round sinks, no drainer in my island bench (although it is L shaped, so plenty of space) I wouldn't have had enough room in the bench against the wall. I think it really depends on the layout of your kitchen, the depth of your island bench, the type if sink you're going to have installed and also how much time you spend washing up. If you've got a deep enough bench, you could install a very smart looking sink that is more a feature. Even one that has a chopping board to cover it up when not in use. If you don't have a window, it can get a little boring standing there washing looking at the wall 600mm from your face Also, depending on the layout, if you are entertaining you might feel a little rude if you have your back to your guests whilst using the sink. I think it would take up to much room on the island bench. I personally prefer to use the bench for various task like food preperations, doing assignments, chatting with the girls etc. If you can, move it to the wall bench. I also like the look of stone benchtop which has no cut outs for sinks etc. But i'm just weird that way Idiots are fun, that's why there is one in every village! - Dr. House - Re: Kitchen sink - on the island or not? 6Mar 28, 2009 2:58 pm Like the above photo, I have my stove on a wall and my sink on the island, - I'm not sure why the sink on the island would be a problem 'A bottle of wine contains more philosophy than all the books in the world.' Ours is under a window though so I don't have to look at a wall. If you have a really lovely splashback then it might be nice to do the dishes there? I love having nothing on my island bench for the same reasons as wonderland, and it irks me if there is anything at all on it before I go to bed at night. It's lovely waking up to a blank clean expanse of stone in the morning. If you have a sink on the island I would always worry about splashes going to the other side. Re: Kitchen sink - on the island or not? 8Mar 28, 2009 3:07 pm Thank you all Our island is around 3.5m long and the other side (agains the wall) is also 3.5m long. The width of the island we still haven't decided so I guess that's a bonus Im leaning towards sink in the island because of the no window situation. I want a double sink (both sides to be the same size) and draining thingos on either side of the sink. A splasbak in the middle of the island would hide the dirty dishes and prevent the splashing to the "breakkie" side of the island. But would it look ok? :S I can't say I've seen any islands like this Re: Kitchen sink - on the island or not? 9Mar 28, 2009 3:17 pm I have a U shaped with a square end kitchen atm and the sink on the island part (I guess that can't be classified as an island then..hey) anyway, it's on that bit and I get to talk to everyone while I am preparing dinner, and of course you know I have sinks in my real island bench in the new house...I Like'm Re: Kitchen sink - on the island or not? 10Mar 28, 2009 3:21 pm Would you consider 3.5m of benchspace and drawers/cupboards and 3.5 of floor to ceiling drawers/cupboards to be a small/medium or large kitchen? Would this be sufficient for storage? I guess it depends on an individual but lets say for an average person/family Re: Kitchen sink - on the island or not? 11Mar 28, 2009 3:26 pm I'm having my sink on the island bench. Plenty of room to wash up, eat breakast ann prepare food, as it is 3.5 metres long x 90cm wide To avoid the splashing water problem and also so you can't see any dishes piled in the sink, I'm also having a servery behind it that will be 20cm wider than each end of the sink. I have no window in my kitchen, so l would rather be facing the dining room and outdoor living area than looking at tiles whilst washing up. I guess it depends on an individual but lets say for an average person/family Sounds a similar size to mine, I would love more, you can never have too much storage but there are only 3 of us and it's plenty, I only cook one meal per day (usually ) so it will be enough...to clean. Re: Kitchen sink - on the island or not? 13Mar 28, 2009 3:33 pm I know this might sound strange to some people but I tend to look at the dishes I am washing when I am using the sink, rather than looking out the window or across a room...I find this method is much more effective in determining whether they are clean or not. I hate doing dishes, seriously hate them but I also hate having dishes on the sink, but unfortunately my hate for doing them is greater... I've been known to go spend the day out of the house to avoid doing the dishes. I rinse them all with a scrubber thing with soap in the handle after use though, but then I need to wash them properly. I HATE DOING DISHES!! I am going to LOVE my dishwasher. Seriously, my sink is disgusting right now It also doesn't help that I am really over this place and just cbf cleaning at all.
