Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Mar 24, 2009 6:10 pm Hi, its crunch time for us to choose these appliances for our upcoming kitchen renovation and I cant decide...my kitchen colours are the same as mrsrusty has...(mrsrusty have u picked a splashback yet??? ) Just wondering the for's and againsts for both a freestanding oven...and the underbench electric oven with gas cooktop...or if anyone has an opinion on what they prefer and why. We are looking at either an 800mm freestanding cooker with electic oven/gas cooktop with 900mm s/s canopy or 600/750 underbench oven, 750mm gas cooktop and 900 s/s canopy. Our benches will be 800mm thick waterfall ends. Thanks for ur time in advance!! .M. OMG...why did we start this project....!! Re: FREESTANDING COOKER OR GAS COOKTOP/UNDERBENCH OVEN..???? 2Mar 24, 2009 6:17 pm There's been a few threads in this but I can't find them. I originally wanted a big freestanding cooker and a canopy rangehood. That was one of my must haves. But I completely changed my mind and am now having an underbench oven and seperate cooktop with a slide out rangehood. I just decided I prefer the integrated look and didn't want to be cleaning down the sides of the oven between the benches. The stainless steel canopy looks good with both looks. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Electric ovens I find better too. But its all personal preference. I find the freestanding cookers look fantastic and really make a statement in your kitchen Living in Caloundra Thread****** Lovin my house all finished!!! We are going the 900mm freestanding electric oven and gas cooktop. Id love being able to vary heat quickly just like camping Built 36sq Plantation "Retreat" on 4460m2 at Spring Mountain, Qld In Living and landscaping.. >>> ... http://retreatspring.blogspot.com Re: FREESTANDING COOKER OR GAS COOKTOP/UNDERBENCH OVEN..???? 5Mar 24, 2009 9:13 pm Thanks for your responses, we r definately going for a gas cooktop, that is a given as we had gas at the last house. I am just not sure whether to purchase a freestanding unit or go for built in..that where i would love peoples opinions, Cheers! .M. OMG...why did we start this project....!! Re: FREESTANDING COOKER OR GAS COOKTOP/UNDERBENCH OVEN..???? 6Mar 24, 2009 9:23 pm I am not a fan at all of free standing ovens, even with the closest fit, there is still a small gap between oven sides and benches and this always gets grotty - very hard to clean without pulling out your large heavy oven - are you really going to do this often enough?? and not damage the floor in the process?? Underbench oven all the way for me! We have underbench electric oven with gas cooktop. Electric ovens are fine IMO (came standard with the house) but definetly go the gas cooktop - so much better for cooking, the inability to regulate electric rings quickly to change from the boil to simmering is a real downfall IMO. We have a retractable rangehood, I like the neat sleek look of these, although I appreciate canopy rangehoods can be a real feature. Re: FREESTANDING COOKER OR GAS COOKTOP/UNDERBENCH OVEN..???? 7Mar 25, 2009 5:53 am I prefer underbench. We wanted a 900mm cooktop but were happy with 600mm oven (to maximise cupboard space) -- can't get that with a freestanding "Your emotions are the slaves to your thoughts, and you are the slave to your emotions." — Elizabeth Gilbert Living in our new house. Currently scaping the land. Re: FREESTANDING COOKER OR GAS COOKTOP/UNDERBENCH OVEN..???? 8Mar 25, 2009 6:31 am In free standing cookers - There is always this gap between the cooker and benchtop. No matter how clean I feel there would be accidents and spillages. So in time the sides may get very dirty . We have gone for a gas cook top and wall double oven. Preferred the wall oven to underbench - easier to get things from in and out Re: FREESTANDING COOKER OR GAS COOKTOP/UNDERBENCH OVEN..???? 9Mar 25, 2009 8:50 am we went with the 600 under bench electric with 900 cook top. as said before i prefer the clean look, lack of cavity to get dirty and as mentioned above don't use the oven a lot but love having an extra wide cook top, me and my flat mate only cook in batches because otherwise we would only eat take out or toasted sandwiches. 900 wide cook top means you can do a spag sauce, pasta, stir fry, rice and steaks all at once. Thats basically meals for a week Re: FREESTANDING COOKER OR GAS COOKTOP/UNDERBENCH OVEN..???? 10Mar 25, 2009 9:10 am Built in ovens and cooktops are easy to clean and look neat, while the cooktop on a freestanding cooker usually gives you more cooking area than the built in cooktop. Re: FREESTANDING COOKER OR GAS COOKTOP/UNDERBENCH OVEN..???? 11Mar 25, 2009 10:28 am 900mm freestanding for us, definitely makes a statement - anyone say wow factor, dirty sides aren't an issue for us, well its not ideal, but I'll give it up for a bigger oven and cooktop. ICK So glad the building is over, never again. Loooove our house, but still not quite sure it was worth all of the stress they put us through! I prefer the look of it all integrated, and if I do cook I am very messy and I'm worried my nice white cupboards are going to get all dirty/greasy at the sides of the cooker Oh well another thing to add to my list for DH of things to change once we get in the house My karma ran over your dogma Re: FREESTANDING COOKER OR GAS COOKTOP/UNDERBENCH OVEN..???? 15Mar 25, 2009 2:12 pm I'm getting a 900mm freestanding oven as part of an upgrade package thing. To be honest I'm not overly fussed what kind of oven I have but I do LOVE how big and impressive this oven looks AND it has the wok burner in the middle which means that I can have two big saucepans or a big saucepan and a big fry pan all on the stove top at once w/out competing for space!! It seriously looks like a commercial style oven/cooker! Gawd I'm going to love it! 'A bottle of wine contains more philosophy than all the books in the world.' I love to cook but cannot stand small 600mm cooktops. Put two large saucepans on and then everything else gets moved off their elements!! With my huge cooker it has 6 burners on top, two separate ovens, a separate grill and a warming / storage drawer. Can't wait to use it I am not concerned about spills down the side - these should be fairly minimal as the benchtops will be built as close as humanely possible to the range to minimise the risk. For me it was all about getting maximum usable space compared to price. For the cost of a large cooktop (wouldn't have gone less then a 900mm) plus two separate ovens - one needing a separate grill function - it would have far outweighed what I paid. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: FREESTANDING COOKER OR GAS COOKTOP/UNDERBENCH OVEN..???? 17Mar 25, 2009 3:51 pm I would never use 2 ovens, I probably only use my one oven couple of times a week - I don't bake cakes and just not much of an oven style cook, I suppose. Re: FREESTANDING COOKER OR GAS COOKTOP/UNDERBENCH OVEN..???? 18Mar 25, 2009 4:06 pm Helyn - I can't wait. One is conventional and one is fan-forced. The fan-forced one even has a baking tray attached to a frame on the door - they side open - so when you open the door the food comes out for you to baste / remove / check. And a separate grill is my all-time must. Cannot stand in-oven grills - way too messy. Plus removable oven liners to keep oven clean - would have like pyrolitic but this wasn't available so removable liners were the next best thing. Some things are worth waiting for. Normally my flat mate helps but i have cooked 3 meals at once before by myself. I have heaps on the only way i have time to cook and clean the kitchen is if i do it once for the week. I also tend to be a little boring with a rotation of about 6 main meals so kinda have those 6 down pat. I have a massive bosch range hood with two fans and external ducting otherwise my house smells like searing meat for a day or two. A spag bog sauce is about 2kg worth of ingredients + 1 kg of pasta, at the moment i live with 1 flat mate who is very similar to me moving in with 2 more shortly, we are going to have to buy bigger pots and pans.
