Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Mar 24, 2009 11:05 am Hi, I would be interested to hear your comments regarding either a wooden or tiled floor for the kitchen. We plan on having timber through-out the main living area. Carpet in bedroom and study. Tiled in toilet, laundry, under stairs and possibly the walkway through from the garage (that may be timber .. still deciding ) It is the same tile through-out, a neautral 330 x 330 ceramic tile (light grey/brown mottled colour). I was leaning towards tile for the kitchen as it is the same as the one in the laundry and goes with our colour scheme for kitchen too. We are a big family (6) and forever in the kitchen .. it needs to be hard wearing. I love timber, but think practicality wise I think tile would be better. But I am unsure if it would look ok. I suppose that is what I am asking ... do you think the tile will look ok? It will butt up to the wooden floor at the entrance to the kitchen. Hope this makes sense. I will attach a plan of the ground floor that shows you the layout. Thank you for taking the time to look and I appreciate any feedback given. I think having the same floor throughout an open plan area makes it look bigger and more seamless. I even chose to get timber in my pantry so that it flowed better from the kitchen. But looking at your floorplan, your kitchen is more of a U shape, so there is more of a defined entry to the kitchen, is that right? (sorry the pic is a bit small for my aging eyes ) So therefore I think you can get away with tiles more than I could in my (more open) kitchen... Tiled or Wooden kitchen floor? 3Mar 24, 2009 1:12 pm Can you post a bigger floor plan? I can't see it very well. Re: Opinions please. Tiled or Wooden kitchen floor? 7Mar 24, 2009 3:24 pm We didn't have much choice in the colour timber - we had dark hardwood so when it was polished up it became even shinier, dark hardwood. Agreed on it showing up undesirables - we have cats and it's not unheard of for me to do a quick sweep a few times a week just to keep it looking tidy. We went with timber throughout the whole house except the bathroom. When it used to have carpet and tiles, the house looked a lot smaller. The house looks enormous now and it is very seamless, matching and nice. I really like the wood, but I guess it's not for everyone. Re: Opinions please. Tiled or Wooden kitchen floor? 8Mar 24, 2009 4:06 pm I think tiles or timber would both look good but I would do kitchen in same as dining and liveing - if they are tiles do kitchen in tiles; if they are timber do kitchen in timber, I don't think a different floor just for the kitchen would look so good. Re: Opinions please. Tiled or Wooden kitchen floor? 9Mar 24, 2009 4:26 pm I've seen an open-plan kitchen/dining/family room where the kitchen floor is different and it looks great. Friends did a kitchen reno, but didn't want to rip up tiles all through the room, as they were relatively new. So they ended up re-tiling the kitchen only in a different colour and style, and outlined the edges, where it met the old tiles, in a plain black gloss tile as a border. So the kitchen area was defined, and the new tiles didn't look like a mis-matched afterthought. Just thought you could consider something similar with a border of contrast tiles.... Or not. Re: Opinions please. Tiled or Wooden kitchen floor? 10Mar 24, 2009 4:32 pm Hiya, I can see the benefits of having tiles in the kitchen (water leaks, cooking utensils being dropped, etc) but we ended up deciding that we'll do timber as we want to keep the living area all the same as it's all open plan. If your kitchen area is well defined and you have straight lines (which looks like it on the plan but I have trouble seeing the plan as it's a bit blurry and small) then you might be able to get away with tiles in the manner that Kek has suggested. Maybe do a bit of Photoshop and MVH on it and see how it comes up. Building a Wisdom Prosperity 23 - http://erwisdomprosperity.blogspot.com/ Re: Opinions please. Tiled or Wooden kitchen floor? 11Mar 24, 2009 4:33 pm I'm a fan of timber for the look, but I'm not fan of it's limitations and maintenance. I'd be forever worried about spilling water and the boards swelling and dropping things and chipping/scratching the timber. Tiles for me. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. KEK I love that idea about the border tiles, and in fact when I was in the tile shop I saw some that I really liked, they had some stainless steel in it, which would match the kickboard. This just might work ..... Re: Opinions please. Tiled or Wooden kitchen floor? 14Mar 24, 2009 5:44 pm Timber. We have floating timber throughout the living/kitchen areas from front door. It has now got scratches and tiny dents, but hey, we live here. It is not the palace. Sure, we drop the odd spoon, fork etc but it doesn't look bad. We have lived with it for 4-5 years. It can be sanded if needed but certainly not yet. We even had a cat for a couple of years. She finally went to heaven. We put Nyotah which is a nice dark honey colour. Tiled or Wooden kitchen floor? 15Mar 24, 2009 6:48 pm I like to keep the number of floor types in a house to a minimum. I try to do timber everywhere (except bathroom, laundry and toilet) in the renos I do. I find using too many types of flooring makes a place feel smaller - so i'd stick to tiles and carpet. Re: Opinions please. Tiled or Wooden kitchen floor? 17Mar 24, 2009 8:40 pm Or you can go the best of both worlds and put down a Panaria Porcelain Timber look tile. Clean with as much water as you want, no swelling etc etc Have them laid with a 1.5mm gap and finished off with a matching brown mortar.. We are looking at doing our entire main floor areas with it. Have seen it laid and looks very much like timber. We have a two samples at home now deciding over them. Tiled or Wooden kitchen floor? 19Mar 24, 2009 10:52 pm I would go for timber. I like the same flooring through the house. We had timber in our last kichen ( it was fine ,no more scratches than anywhere else in the house) and will be having it again in our new house. Sonya Re: Opinions please. Tiled or Wooden kitchen floor? 20Mar 25, 2009 10:58 am There is a lot of support for timber and yes, it is great. I like it too. BUT, we went for tiles in the kitchen and they also look great. The rest of the house (except bathroom) is wood. I actually like the break in the floor to define the kitchen area. When I'm cooking, the kids know to stay off the tiled area. I don't let them in with the oven or stove on even though they are up high. The girls can sit at the breakfast bar and help/watch from there. It works a treat. Tiles are easy. Get dark grout. I am in the kitchen for hours every day and we bought super tough tiles so that they wouldn't chip. I drop food all the time, grating carrots etc and it is easy to clean up. The wood is also easy but for some reason, the tiles suit me best in the kitchen and I wouldn't change a thing. No, I even have sections of narrowness where the tiles won't slide up any further.
