I know CS seems like the most popular finish ATM for benchs, but I am wondering about granite.
Does any one have it/have an opinion on it?
I have only ever seen granite bench in black (not my choice) - can you get it in white tones?

Re: Granite Benchtops 7Mar 26, 2009 8:35 pm I love the look of a stone finish, had *blinkered* only really considered CS, but am learning fast to check out other options before making a decision. Jeremy - I like the lighter colours, in 'white' tones, not too fussed about creams/beiges. I know granite is porous, as is CS. How easy is it to 'look after' in kitchens? Is it suitable to use in bathrooms (benches) as well? I guess you can still do the waterfall effect in granite, too. I appreciate your input (yours too, Ed! ) Thanks HH Life's too short too drink bad wine Re: Granite Benchtops 8Mar 27, 2009 8:49 am Ok, Granite, yes it is porous but honestly its not hard at all to take care of. All you need is to get a tin of granite sealant which can be supplied by your stone mason or any granite supplier (they always got it in stock) and all you do is you wipe it over your bench every few months, say 6 months and that keeps your granite nice and glossy and at the same time protects it from soaking up any temporary liquids on the bench. Also if you just take care of it you should be fine, just dont leave cofffee mug stains on there without wiping em down and what not..just commen sence and from there you should be fine. Im sure i posted this up in another threat some where on here .. full run down on how to take care of your granite and best way to keep it in show room condition. Granite is useful in any situation, Its very good in the kitchens and just as useful in the bathroom, ALTHOUGH i would suggest going a nice white marble say like a carrera marble or arebescatto marble. Very very smick in the bathroom. But all in all if you take care of your stone tops and do as i said with the sealant your tops will look brand new for a 100 years over! And yes waterfall can be done on granite, well think about it granite has been around alot longer then any engineered stone and there were waterfall joints so really yes .. it is very very possible, ITS THE ORIGIN! anywayz hope my input helps. I always thought people got ceasar stone etc over granite because it was cheaper. I was speaking to mum last night who has granite and she said she got a quote for CS and it was several thousand of dollars more expensive (large kitchen). What makes the manmade stones more popular? Re: Granite Benchtops 11Mar 27, 2009 1:34 pm Thanks for the info. I am curious and got some questions. Are you saying CS is easy to chip or fragile? Or it just means CS is still good in kitchen, but Granite is much superior (and luxury) than CS? What are the specific bad things about CS? Caesarstone is a composite of ground up stone & plastic. The benefits are consistency of colour and size. But it is relatively expensive. Granite is natural and unprocessed so it's price range runs from way below CS to way above for the rarer colours eho Thanks for the info. I am curious and got some questions. Are you saying CS is easy to chip or fragile? Or it just means CS is still good in kitchen, but Granite is much superior (and luxury) than CS? What are the specific bad things about CS? CS is not fragile, but it can be damaged by heat and chemicals. There is one other called Crystal Rock which is pure glass, but looks like Caesarstone with a higher gloss, and it's cheaper. So far, only available from Bosoar in Melbourne. Not affected by heat or chemicals. Re: Granite Benchtops 14Mar 27, 2009 8:44 pm Can I just say, every time I open this thread and see Mrs B 's pic of her benchtops I just *sigh*. They are so gorgeous. I'm trying to decide between granite and polished concrete. The concrete appears to be not so easy in my area, so granite may be in fact cheaper. Hoping to start getting pricing soon. Thats why you have to go to the supplier and pick your own slab. We are going to have a colour from the High Range, Black Pearl (more silver, gold, bue than black) and got quotes ranging from (6400 for 30mm from the Stone shop) to 6200 for 20mm with 40mm edges from the builder) we go for the builder's quote because of all the issues around damage control. cheers Re: Granite Benchtops 16Mar 29, 2009 1:46 pm Thanks all for the input, & thanks again Jeremy & Ed for the advice. I think our place will finish up with granite benchtop. But that glass you mentioned, Ed, has caught my interest.... No outlet in Sydney????? Looking at pics on the net never gives you the whole pic - I like to see things in the flesh, so to speak. Jeremy - can you tell me pls the difference in where the granite comes from? Is one less/more porous, more/less dense? ...... Life's too short too drink bad wine Re: Granite Benchtops 17Mar 30, 2009 8:16 am Lol, no no no, the only difference's of where it comes from is the colour ranges. yes it will be different density and different ammount of porous but thats only in the actual colour it self. Whiter colours are less dense darker colours contain iron which makes them alot more dence and heavier. But when it comes to the porous its all up to how the shiny surface was polished. So your italian material not always but most of the time has a better polish as they take more time and care in their polish unlike the material that comes over from China, India (cheap labour). And to Annelies, Who told you black pearl was a high range colour? If your builder is using that excuse to make more money take a second look @ the supplier. Black pearl is a fairly standard range colour. Picking it up atm for almost $130sq/m. Anyways hope my advice helped. Jeremy@SSP.Stones Thanks Jeremy, yes, it is our builder who has Black Pearl displayed as High Range in the display village and our Tender states: "Granite Bench Top with colour selected from the High Range", because we asked for BP right away. Unfortunately we see not much difference in price between the builder and a granite supplier in M'dore. I keep the 130/m in mind and will have another look around before signing the contract. cheers Re: Granite Benchtops 19Apr 01, 2009 8:31 am Quick Tip For Annelise, Check out W.K Marble & Granite.
