Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Mar 13, 2009 4:15 pm Hi,
We are doing a knock-down and is building an architect designed house. We have some ideas on the layout of the kitchen and bathrooms and the architect said we probably should get the kitchen and bathroom put in by the kitchen and bathroom people rather than the builder. Shall we go to the big kitchen companies like Impala Kitchens so should we find a cabinet maker since we already know what we want in terms of design and material? Obviously we are trying to save some money but also want good quality with material and workmanship that will last at least 10 years or so. Re: Help with kitchen installation! 2Mar 13, 2009 6:47 pm If you know what you want in design and materials then I would be trying to find a local cabinetmaker rather than going with one of the Big Names - obviously they have buying power so their material prices may be a bit cheaper, but they tend to be high volume sales focused businesses.
Dealing directly with the fabricator/installer will give you greater involvement/control in the entire process and less likelihood of someone trying to talk you into something that they want to sell to you at a significant markup. The biggest issue is finding the cabinetmaker who will do the job on time and to specification - there seem to be a few cowboys out there at the moment so any homework you can do (or referrals you can get, from, say, this site) will help your chances of getting the happy result you are after. On top of this, even though you pretty much know what you are after it might be worth meeting with a Kitchen Design Consultant as they frequently have a set of cabinet makers who they use or refer on a regular basis and do this with their own reputation riding on the outcome - and they might even be able to provide some refinements to your design that you might not have already thought of. At the end of the day you can always compare quotes between the options and see what you think of the difference versus the rapport you develop with the respective parties - just make sure that if you are comparing quotes that all aspects of the quoted jobs are identical to one another to ensure parity.
