I would have both out in the kitchen. The idea of having a sink in the pantry is good if you dont want people to see the mess, but like everyone said, it's so tiny and dark in there. You're only staring at a blank wall. Cant wait for your house to be built! You've had all these different ideas, would be great to see it all come together, whenever that will be Re: Second sink, kitchen or butler's pantry? 22Mar 12, 2009 4:08 pm Well, I love 3 sinks...AND I have a lovely window right in front of my sink in the butler's pantry......but, really, I just liked the look of it (the 2 sinks next to each other in the kitchen, and the other one in the pantry) Oh, and I din't want the drainer, that's why I did the 2 next to each other in the kitchen.
I'm liking PK's idea of a 9 sink house, though!!!!!!!!!! Solidarity, not solidity.......The Lexicon of Life Re: Second sink, kitchen or butler's pantry? 23Mar 12, 2009 4:12 pm Honestly I'm easily pleased... I read all the other threads and people love their lavish wall paper and beautiful linen...
I just want some sinks and a few extra cupboards and I'd be thrilled. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Second sink, kitchen or butler's pantry? 24Mar 12, 2009 4:54 pm Hi Jo
Our second sink is in the BP which I like. I just wish that I had put the dishwasher in there as well! I am having a walk in pantry (approx 1700 x 2100, goodness only knows what I am expected to fill it with). So just what is a Butlers Pantry? [stop laughing now pls] Jo - do I need to have any sinks???? You can have my one, if you like. Maybe your mum would like to give me some baking lessons sometime.... I think you should keep it in the BP because: 1) Have messy sink hidden away most times and functional one out in view 2) Re-sale expectations of a BP 3) They have more possibilities if they are in separate areas That's my op! We had to have ours in the BP because we have dozens of baby bottles etc which have to washed and steralized all the time, so I wanted a little area for just that task which didn't affect our normal needs of a kit sink. When that is not longer a necessity, I really thought it wouldn't get used much (but it wouldn't if it were in the kit area OR BP, IYKWIM) so that's just my 2c worth. BTW our BP has no window, but I'm thinking a little tv for me!!! hehe Annie A thankful person is a happy person. A 'few' extra cupboards? More like a whole house full of extra cupboards. And that portable sink looks like that thing where babies sleep in and you carry it around. I have no idea what they are called. Is that bad? I saw you had commented in this thread..... the kitchen expert, the one I've been waiting for....... and this is your contribution..... I thought you had some advice. I thought that was good advice...I'm not just a kitchen designer, I specify form and function for all aspects of human/object interface. But on the topic of sinks. You have previously asserted that you like and want a functional kitchen to be counterpointed only by the inclusion of the Greasy Salif - which, if that is as whimsical as your layout is going to get sounds good to me. My opinion on sinks is that they need to be deep and broad - personally I like laundry trough sized sinks because you can be guaranteed to fit anything that might need soaking or direct water flow from above in one. I really like those really big triple bowl concrete troughs that were so prevalent in the 50's, and salvaged one from being thrown away when I moved our laundry under the house. So a good 2 bowl combo in the main area sounds viable, and if you believe the second sink might be prone to having utensils and cookware left ****** in them for indeterminate periods I would suggest at least a single laundry trough size sink in the pantry area. Maximum bench space in the main prep area is still a high priority so I wouldn't be too hasty to gratuitously add more sinks - then again, is the prep work by both parties going to be done in the main kitchen? I find it less sensible to do work in one area then carry utensils or cookware into another room/space to be cleaned. I have tried to follow your requirements in this thread and am not too sure if a firm kitchen design even exists yet, so it is a bit hard to provide specific advice. If you have outrageous amounts of room in your prep area and don't mind dirty utensils being seen by mere mortals then put the sinks closest to where the action is going to be but far enough apart that each sink area can be independently used in conjunction with the surrounding prep surfaces and accommodate items waiting to go into the sink. Cheers, Earl Re: Second sink, kitchen or butler's pantry? 36Mar 13, 2009 3:25 pm In the pantry. Not allowed to put an extra one in the kitchen. So sorry I wasted everyone's time. I'm kind of glad I didn't have a choice, I would still be thinking about it. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Thanks Strumer, great advice as usual. I've gone with a double, with no drainer, in the main kitchen and a single in the pantry, also with no drainer. I'll get the drainer basket for the one in the pantry. I want to see the stone I'm paying for, not a big metal drainer. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself.
