Browse Forums Kitchen Corner Re: cutting granite benchtops? Installer? 21Aug 24, 2009 1:15 pm Jeremy...I fitted the granite benchtops on the weekend...as these were various sizes, I had to do a bit of cutting, however your advice came into play. However it is a p&*%$k of a job...firstly I must recommend a makita wet saw for the straight cuts...I cut all these outside of course, and clamped a straight edge to the granite to get a nice cut...well they came up terrific...I also had to do one internal 45 mitre on the bullnose, I used the angle grinder for that, with the turbo diamond blade...I am still yet to glue the joins and stick to the mdf, however all looks pretty good so far. Now the dirty part...I installed a 2200 x 900 island bench and had to cut out the sink hole inside...not wanting to take the risk of doing it outside and cracking the granite when installing...I attempted to put up some tarps around the area to minimise dust...I cut the hole out...without too much trouble...again the turbo blade...DUST...DUST...everywhere...what a mess, I expected this...but it is a real pain...I also had to do a little grinding to get the sink to fit better...more dust....anyhow all looking pretty good for an amatuer...I will post some pics when finished...appreciate your advice on this matter...I don't think I will attempt this again...I have had enough. Re: cutting granite benchtops? Installer? 22Aug 24, 2009 8:33 pm Hi Guys! liked to see this thread I too have my plans for a benchtop although no sink cutout for me I have some concerns about the weight of the stone which is about 100Kg and 30 mm thickness. I have a metabo 125 mm angle grinder and get some kicks next will want to hire a small makita wet saw I have been meaning to get to do my tiles with it but I do not if it kicks just as well. can anyone tell me that/ I';; be grateful. Metabo is quite good especially with the turbo blade but the job is too dusty I get to the point of seeing very little ahead and some people told me I should get somene to wet my stone during grinding but I did not think is was a good idea more of a joke I think he!he! Thanks Re: cutting granite benchtops? Installer? 23Aug 24, 2009 8:40 pm If you are doing straight cuts...you can't go past the Makita wet saw...cost me $84 for the day...I don't reckon you will get clean cuts with the angle grinder...let the saw do the work...and plenty of water. Re: cutting granite benchtops? Thanks leeton That is a prompt reply I think I can get it hired for $70 that is the snall version and continious diamond wheel cutter around here although metabo does work very well and no side chipping all is in the speed and spindle consistency but as I said before just too dusty even when it fans the dust away and forward of its guard. By the way do you know of laser cut services? Someone told me that the cuts although expensive they are superbly clean and smooth? Re: cutting granite benchtops? Installer? 26Aug 31, 2009 10:55 am Jeremy@SSP.Stones Use quick dry megapoxy. Can be purchased from W.K. Marble & Granite, its a 2 part glue which will only harden once mixed together thorougly. This glue is very very hard and doesnt cause any movement in the pieces once dry almost like a concrete mix. You will need a fair bit of this stuff all the way around so that your benchtops are nice and solid all the way thru. If this is achieved your joints and joint glue will be stable and everything will look spick and spam. Thanks everyone for this post, I'm finding it very informative I am looking at purchasing a ready-made kitchen through Fowlers Auctions which will include 40mm bullnose midnight black granite benchtops. I've heard that granite can expand and contract due to change in temp. Do I have to leave a gap for this between the benchtop and wall? Thanks Jeremy for all your information! Just a question about joining the benchtops at the cuts. Thinking might do a straight cut, not a 45 degree cause I'm not that good with a wet saw Do I use the 2 part glue to join the benchtops together at the cut? I'm also assuming that this is the glue that you use to adheise your benchtops down? Many thanks everyone for your help! Cheers, Wendy The stumps are in the ground! Cheers, Let me explain Wendy Expansion can occur but it is very, very minimal nothing like floors or other materials so I say there is no need for flexible joints however it is very heavy material and cabinets must be able to support such heavy weight. A typical wet saw would be able to tilt or mitre to 45 angle no problems since they are similar to circular saws at all and you should be able to flush the two parts no problems a and angle grinder or wet grinder can help you further but I do not think it will be necessary after usig the wet saw. All stone places have different kinds of glue and or bind stones of all kinds starting with liquid nails. Re: cutting granite benchtops? Installer? 28Sep 01, 2009 1:29 pm Wendy, I went to a local stonemason and asked him for some epoxy glue...he gave me enough for the 2 joins (adhesive, hardener) and the colouring agent (black). He charged me $10...very happy. Re: cutting granite benchtops? Our granite is in,its just gorgeous We bought ours in slab form, alot cheaper, sides already done The installer was Darren(weekend work) & was "FANTASTIC". The company we bought ours from with the measurements worked out how much we needed, the best way to use it so we also had enough left over to have a full length splashback for the stove & splashbacks on the wall instead of tiles. They were the best, are in Bayswater & easy to find.Let me know if you wont the details. Ours came to around $3,700 total for granite & installation, with some left for chopping boards Block bought 1st RBC X! 2nd Ventrua,Keeper!
