Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Feb 27, 2009 9:38 pm Ok, well...as I posted in another thread a while ago, our stupid previous dishwasher leaked behind our cupboards and back wall/board on the breakfast bar and even though we now have a GLORIOUS new dishwasher, we still have kitchen damage that we need repaired.
So we're going through our body corporate insurance, which is all fine and will cover us, but we need 2 quotes, which is totally understandable BUT the first quote was a LOT higher than the second. So the insurer will be going with the second, obviously (I work in insurance). This is technically ok, but can I just give a very brief summary of the quotes... Quote 1 VERY comprehensive, and it covers everything that might go wrong as well as just the actual damaged parts. The repairer says the bench tops often crack in two and so they'll most likely need to be replaced, so they've quoted for that. There are 2 separate breakfast bar bench tops (one is narrower and higher than the other main one). Also, the kickboard tiles they say will most likely not be able to be all put back on once they're removed in order that the actual kickboards can be replaced. So that entails new tiles there too, and seeing as getting ones to match the existing ones over the other side of the kitchen will be next to impossible, we have to replace ALL of them. Similarly, with the splashback tiles. (all our kitchen is very much connected and attached to everything else) The bench tops end at these tiles and so the repairer says if the bench tops are removed, these tiles will be damaged, so...replacement is again required. They've also quoted for all the actual damaged parts too. It came in at over $9,000. Quote 2 This repairer is JUST quoting for the actual damaged parts, which are gables, some of the kitchen cupboards, removing the kickboard tiles and repairing the kickboards beneath but then putting back the kickboard tiles. Removing the bench tops and then putting them back, and the same with the splashback tiles. And also removing and replacing with a new back board/wall to the breakfast bar (the wall you can see from the lounge, this is). This quote doesn't include the cost SHOULD anything break. The repairer says IF something does break, they will do a variation and thus, add it onto the price as they go. Their quote is just under $4,000. SO. A LOT cheaper, BUT...my concern is that SHOULD anything break, it is going to really screw us up in terms of the length of time this will all take. Repairer 1 says it'd all be done in 2 full days, which is excellent. Repairer 2 says it'd take a few days, but of course, if something breaks, we'd have to then stop work while we choose new bench tops, splashback tiles and kickboard tiles, and then they could come back and install them. But in the meantime, we'd be without a kitchen. Also, repairer 1 was incredibly quick to respond to us and quoted us in a good time frame. Repairer 2 took 2 weeks to respond and then took another week to come out and quote, and THEN took yet another week to get the quote to us, despite promising to email it through the next day. So. Apart from any insurance issues with who they choose and that we basically have no rights except if we choose to pay the difference if we wish to go with the expensive, preferred repairer, what is your opinion on the likelihood of these things actually cracking/breaking? Thank you! And apologies for this post not being so brief (again). lol How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Kitchen Repair Issues 2Mar 03, 2009 4:15 pm Nobody? How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Kitchen Repair Issues 3Mar 03, 2009 4:22 pm I would get a third quote if you haven't allready sent them in.
That way you can check if the norm is to quote for "what if's" I have never have anyone quote for things that may go wrong. What happens if the top does not crack, do you only get charged accordingly? Seems strange. And if you pick out new tiles etc and the old ones don't crack you will be dissapointed. i know if i choose new bench top and tiles I wouldn't be happy with the old ones. Just my thoughts. Tam Re: Kitchen Repair Issues 4Mar 04, 2009 5:11 pm Hmm, I guess that does make sense, yes.
I think the first people were just going to go ahead and replace everything, even if nothing broke, BUT they did seem fairly certain the bench top WOULD crack and the tiles would be hard to keep in one piece. Hmm. How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair Hi All, Hoping someone might be be to provide some advice on my ceiling that needs repair.
