It's not as a replacement, it's for a new area.

Pretty sure that laminate benchtop is only attached to the carcass (cupboard below). Chris Surely there is a sealer/something thingy between the bench and the walls? I just need to know a rough installation cost. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Ballpark figure for a laminate bench p/m. 11Feb 21, 2009 6:26 pm Joles - postformed laminated benchtop up to 650mm deep should cost up to about $160 per linear meter from a reseller or specifier.
If you want to hang it on the wall (I assume to use in a desk type situation) there needs to be something fastened to the wall that the benchtop can sit on and something at the front of the bench that it can stand on. I am about to do this for the office in our studio, and I plan to fasten a horizontal batten the length of the benchtop to the wall and screw up through the batten into the benchtop. Alternatively you could fix a set of brackets at intermittent distances (probably at the studs in the wall interval) and use these to fasten the back of bench. At the front I am going to use some Haefele adjustable 690mm H, 60mm diam. legs which fasten via a nice big plate to the underside of the bench top. The thing to bear in mind is that 34mm laminated benchtop is quite heavy and when used in a kitchen situation the load is being distributed evenly along all of the gables and backs of the carcasses underneath, and a similar need will be required with a "floating top" so don't underestimate the amount of support the tops will need. Since the top doesn't sound like it is going to have a splashback above it you may wish to consider having the "back" edge of the top also laminated; in a kitchen situation this edge is normally left unfinished as it invariably has a splashback sitting on top of the edge. If the work is beyond your own capacity to perform, a local installer, if you can find one, would be working at maybe $50 an hour and depending on the size of the job will want a couple of hours...hard to tell without knowing the exact scope of works. I hope this helps. Cheers, Earl Re: Ballpark figure for a laminate bench p/m. 12Feb 21, 2009 6:52 pm Thanks so much Earl.
I think I can safely say it is beyond me. It's not actually a desk... it will be a cat bench. My dogs like to raid the kitty litter and one naughty dog likes to eat the cat food, so it is going to be bench for the kitty litter, the cat food and the cat bed. I want it to be open below so that the dogs water can sit underneath it and it basically becomes a pet area, out of the way from the main living areas. Probably sounds nutty to other people, but this set up will be very functional for us. The price sounds not to bad. Thanks everyone. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. thus its guaranteed workmanship and you have piece of mind the bench wont fall off the wall and squash the dogs:) Kitchens are like finger prints, no two are ever the same!!
