Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Feb 16, 2009 2:42 pm Hi we are having our kitchen renovated next week very excited that we will no longer have a pink benchtop and cupboards falling apart.
Been reading this forum a few times, its very informative, would love to build a new house one day but will see. Have loved reading about the journeys that people have had! Anyway, for our kitchen we have chosen white vinyl wrap gloss doors (colour is called New Designer White) and Laminex Pure Minerstone benchtops. Just trying to decide on the splashback. Would love to have glass but not sure if its out of our price range or not, just wondering what the approx square meter price would be? Also what colour would be best, would be looking at a neutral type colour I think. The other option would be to have white rectangular tiles, I saw a thread on donuts house and this looked nice too. Is it a major price difference between glass and tiling? Hope that all makes sense looking forward to hearing your responses. Re: New at kitchen renovations :) just need a bit of help... 2Feb 16, 2009 8:34 pm if you were thinking white tiles, then i would suggest white glass splashback.
the rectangular tiles look great and i quite like the traditional look of tiles. Maleena Hardy Curiouser & Curiouser Vintage-Handmade-Interior & Colour Consultancy http://www.curiouserandcuriouser.com.au Re: New at kitchen renovations :) just need a bit of help... 3Feb 17, 2009 12:13 pm Hi Maleena,
Thanks for much for answering my post. I went to Beaumont tile today and had a look, so many choices. I brought home a 100x200 in white and a 100x300 in white too, but I think I like the smaller one. The guy suggested laying it in brick pattern, but I think I like the style more in donuts kitchen. They had a display of Stegbar splashback, he said it was about $800 per square meter, I knew it was expensive but was surprised. Does this seem to be on par with what people are paying? Thanks! Re: New at kitchen renovations :) just need a bit of help... 4Feb 17, 2009 8:35 pm hi mrs rusty,
our tiles are 100x300. I think the stacking style of laying gives them a more contemporary look. I think an average glass splashback costs around $2000 from what I have seen so this sounds about in line with your $800 per sqm; sadly this wasn't in our budget but I am more than happy with the tiles so far (the grout isn't dirty yet at least! ) The rest of your kitchen sounds similar to what we have too. We used Pure Mineralstone in the pantry and it looks great. I love your kitchen, I have looked at your pics many times I think found it when I was trying to find some pics of the Diamond Gloss Pure Mineralstone. I agree on the stacking style too, much nicer than the brick style idea! Thanks for letting me know the size...I actually thought yours was the smaller one our kitchen will still only be small not sure if the smaller ones will look better. So hanging out when the new one comes, will try and post some photos. Found it so handy that people had posted theirs. I don't think the 100x300 will look out of place in a smaller kitchen, I think it's just personal taste! Our splashback isn't very big either. WOuld be lucky to be 2m long I reckon? Anyway, I showed DH the tile samples he doesn't like either! He thinks it might be too white..and suggested black?! By the horror on my face he then downgraded it to grey . He really wanted a black benchtop but I disagreed as its such a small spot black would make it more pokey! He then said he was chatting to a friend the other day that got a glass splashback cheaper than $800 per square meter, so we have sent them an email to get the details. DH can't think of the price what he said though. I do like both tiles, I measured our splashback its 1.7m long, there will also be another one (our kitchen is u shape but with another length on the opposite wall if that makes sense?) and we are having more bench space there in between the pantry and fridge. I am so hanging out till it comes ...been a while coming plus it was delayed for a week as they have had some problems in the workshop when we had the extreme heat in Adelaide a few weeks ago. Re: New at kitchen renovations :) just need a bit of help... 8Feb 18, 2009 9:31 pm doesn't DH know that he doesn't get a look in with the kitchen???
no seriously though a nice light grey (or silver?) glass splashback that picks up on one of the flecks in the benchtop would look lovely... good luck with the prices hope they are reasonable. And definitely post up pics when you're done!! "Your emotions are the slaves to your thoughts, and you are the slave to your emotions." — Elizabeth Gilbert Living in our new house. Re: New at kitchen renovations :) just need a bit of help... 9Feb 20, 2009 4:37 pm Ha ha thanks donuts its funny DH kept saying when we first got our friend over to quote that its "my space to he will leave it up to me" but then later on DH convinced me to get the more expensive doors because he liked them better.
Anyway I heard back from our cabinet maker he thinks can glass for half that price and is looking into it for us. So fingers crossed. Thanks for your help do like the tiles though, but would be nice to have glass...decisions, descisions.
