Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Feb 09, 2009 6:31 am After my post here and reading other threads I settled on glass splashback. However, the builder argues that glass is hard to clean and maintain (I thought it was just Jiff + cloth from time to time?).
Furthermore I find Caesarstone is more dull than Glass, granite etc and so it would look dull as a splashback as opposed to glass which (being raven black or black glitter) will act as a mirror and create depth and space in the room. Any feedback plz? It is quite urgent as it needs to be decided quickly. Re: Caesarstone splashback - too dull? Glass - easy to clean? !! 2Feb 09, 2009 7:37 am I'd think that they are trying to sell you a c/s splashback because they'd make a lot more money from it
As for cleaning glass - spray bottle with 1 part metho, 5 parts water and an old rag. Behind the stove - I'd use 1 part cloudy ammonia, 4 parts water to get rid of the grease on a daily basis - would take 30 seconds. After 4 years - we're in! Re: Caesarstone splashback - too dull? Glass - easy to clean? !! 5Feb 09, 2009 8:10 am sorry to hijack the thread OP, but with glass splashbacks is the glass usually tinted or is it jsut the back of the glass thats painted in whatever colour you wish and then installed??
Can you see the wall behind/through the glass at all usually? Re: Caesarstone splashback - too dull? Glass - easy to clean? !! 6Feb 09, 2009 8:17 am There is Starfire glass which is clear, when it's painted you get the true colour coming through. Then there is the normal green tinted glass which will be used if you don't specify what you want...it's cheaper...and the colour you choose will be affected by the green in it. And, no you can't see the wall at all.
I have seen a white painted green tinged glass splashback and it looks lovely, IF you want a greenish colour, it looks very nice with a black stone top and white cupboards, smart and fresh. Re: Caesarstone splashback - too dull? Glass - easy to clean? !! 7Feb 09, 2009 9:04 am OK, glad you cant see the wall behind the glass as the plasterings a little rough in patches because of old walls that were joined to it etc..
we''ve got a slight off white cabinet colour with a slightly more off white quartz benchtop and will probably be having Dulux Puddle coloured splashbacks which suits our blackbutt flooring pretty well hopefully.. puddle : http://members.iinet.net.au/~armstronghome/puddle.jpg Re: Caesarstone splashback - too dull? After a company with clear glass and which has very strong durable glass and a useful guarantee! Thankies! I went with Deco Glaze and they were great. You do a rough measurement, they give you a quote. If you accept they come and give you a firm & final quote when they've measured up. Re: Caesarstone splashback - too dull? Glass - easy to clean? !! 12Feb 09, 2009 1:00 pm once you've cleaned your galss splashback, to get rid of any water streaks or droplets you can just use a microfibre cloth - I use one on my mirrors for streak-free drying and they are great. cheap, no chemicals and re-usable. Re: Caesarstone splashback - too dull? Glass - easy to clean? !! 13Feb 09, 2009 4:01 pm nang3 what sorta dollars are people paying for splashbacks nowadays??? ive seen anything from $450-650sqm - does that sound about right? It varies a lot. I paid 1.5k for a ~2.1m x 1m and a separate little .9 x .4. But thats all star fire clear stuff, i had two power points in the big piece, all saftey glass, all the thicker stuff and one piece going up for the range hood if that makes sense. Each power point is $100 + to get it cut out Not 100% but i think you can use safety glass behind the actually cook top them have a join and have normal glass for the rest which cuts down cost, you can get thinner glass. I am selling my place so went a 'safe' option of navy blue but we looked at one which had a tint so was almost like a mirror with a blue tinge it was a really cool dramatic look, i loved it but as i said went on the safe side in case not everyone did. Re: Caesarstone splashback - too dull? Glass - easy to clean? !! 14Feb 09, 2009 4:13 pm IMO - don't use caeserstone as a splashback. My parents did, and had it removed not long after they moved in. They hated it and it looked ugly. It was replaced with a glass splashback, which looks fabulous. I'll be going glass.

I talked to my wife and she said it's really easy to clean. She uses a cloth and soapy water every day, ajax once a week, and then methylated spirits once a month. The colour of the stone is Linen.
