Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Feb 03, 2009 8:41 am Hey guys,
well i just bought 1 unit apartment and the kitchen at the moment is pretty shocking. Unfortunately i dont have a lot of money to play with to reno it so was wondering what people thought i could do on a cheap budget. I was thinking of sanding down the cupboard doors, repainting them(Maybe a chocolate colour) and getting new door handles as thats a relatively cheap exercise. Any other ideas? Heres a pic of it as it is now. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Tips? Cheap kitchen reno ideas? 2Feb 03, 2009 9:03 am Hey privatepang, welcome to the forum,
Do you have a budget in mind? You could paint the tiles and grout, sand and paint the cupboards like you have mentioned, definitely lose the blue blind and replace with a nicer more neutral coloured roller/roman blind or timber venetion blind perhaps. You could change the taps for a more modern looking one perhaps and even see if you can get some clearance laminate benchtops as well. Some kitchen places have offcuts or can do small pieces quite cheap? What state are you in? Maybe other members can provide you with some links/contacts to get some other things too?? Welcome again! Re: Tips? Cheap kitchen reno ideas? 3Feb 03, 2009 9:29 am Thanks for the reply! Well to be honest, budget would be under $1k. right now im saving to redo my bathroom so trying to spend as little as possible and eventually will be renting the place out so dont wanna go too crazy
Im in Sydney. Yeah was thinkgina about getting a new benchtop. Was worried that it might not be that level if i take off the bench as the kitchen is 35 years old. Blue blind is actually gone, Kitchen is stripped. This was taken when the tenant was still living there. Will see how much the timber ventian costs. Paint the tiles... interesting. Was thinking of retiling it eventually coz it looks quite ugly but will see what options there are for colours. Re: Tips? Cheap kitchen reno ideas? 4Feb 03, 2009 9:34 am Depending on what you want to do with your floor coverings, you could lay some new vinyl or maybe some floating timber or laminate down too? You could tile it but it would cost more..... But renewing the flooring will definitely give it a more modern look? Re: Tips? Cheap kitchen reno ideas? 5Feb 03, 2009 9:57 am Do you lay the floating timber on top of the current flooring gernerally or do you need to rip that out?
Sorry im really new to all this. Anyone have contacts for the timber? It sounds like a really good idea. Re: Tips? Cheap kitchen reno ideas? 6Feb 03, 2009 10:06 am for something simple you can try just cover the existing splashback with some stainless steel panels and put some new stainless steel handles to match. see this one from ikea:
Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ or for $1000 you can probably replace the cupboards and benchtops on the cooktop side with some simple white cupboard doors if you do it yourself (try Ikea ARLIG door, they're really cheap and look alright) but it may cost more if you want chocolate brown doors. on the sink side you can just replace the doors to match the new ones. otherwise simply replacing the benchtops maybe the answer, and it shouldn't cost too much: http://www.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/products/60142110 Re: Tips? that ikea link i assume is for the bench top? Seems quite thin but i like the idea. Thanks guys, many great ideas coming through. Be nice if i could go for a wooden bench top and just paint the cupboards white and new handles. That should freshen it up quite a lot. Flooring would be great as well if its afforable Re: Tips? Cheap kitchen reno ideas? 8Feb 03, 2009 12:27 pm Actually the benchtops from ikea aren't too bad, they're 3.8cm thick and feel quite solid. If you like timber benchtops but don't want to spend too much and want easy maintenance, you can try this walnut-look laminate benchtop, 186cm long for only $110:

Cheap kitchen reno ideas? 10Feb 03, 2009 2:09 pm Yeah i really like the $70 wood style bench top. Looking at a few of the doors as well on the ikea website and its very affordable. Just gotta see if it will fit with my current cabinets or if i should just repaint my ones and put on new handles Re: Tips? Cheap kitchen reno ideas? 11Feb 04, 2009 11:43 am Well had a closer look at the kitchen last night and realised a lot of the laminex on the cupboard doors as well as the cupboards are peeling off or splitting so I guess the repainting option would be a waste of $$
Will have to save up for a proper job to be done in replacing everything Thanks for the tips guys tho! Re: Tips? Cheap kitchen reno ideas? 13Feb 04, 2009 1:59 pm Another place to look for kitchens is the Trading Post. They usually have lots of almost-new kitchens for sale. The kitchens are second-hand from people who like to be in fashion and fall for the latest fads. Often the kitchens are only 2-3 yrs old.
Judie Re: Tips? Cheap kitchen reno ideas? 14Feb 04, 2009 6:15 pm I wouldn't be spending any money trying to give that kitchen a facelift.
If the doors are delaminating the cupboard carcasses won't be in much better condition. Any money you spend on fixing the existing kitchen would not be a very cost effective exercise (if you plan on your fixes lasting for very long). Have a look at a local AUSTRALIAN MADE unassembled kitchen cabinet supplier to replace all of your cabinets, doors and tops - while you are getting that done you can put in a deeper top for the sink side and maybe get a cupboard on the wall to put the microwave in (if it isn't already in a cupboard). While the kitchen is out you can think about what you want to do with the floors and get that done before you put your new kitchen in. I understand that money is tight and you may not be able to afford a new kitchen - but if I were in that situation I would not bother wasting money on a kitchen that is well past it's use by date. My alternative would be to rip the whole lot out, do the floor and if I didn't have the money for new cabinets then build construction pine frame shelves and benchtop supports with a sheet of varnished formply for my benchtop - you could even lash out and paint the pine white if you felt rich. An open frame kitchen in a small space could look quite funky - nice big plastic tubs on the shelves for all the smaller and less decorative items. When the money does come along for the new kitchen you can unscrew the pine framework and use it for something else, like storage shelves (if you have any room) or some such. My thoughts for the day.
